Thanks for this. I'm in the process of renovating a 20 year old Benelli which runs the same Piaggio Leader engine. I was wondering if there might be be a retaining circlip sneaked inside the clutch/variator cover (which I can't yet remove because the clutch nut has been banged on with an air-hammer), because although the two retaining bolts came off easily, the motor don't want to shift...

Hi Tim, I have a Piaggio 150 and it cranks really slow almost stopping when on the compression stroke and it won't start because it is slow. It sounds like the starter is laboured but the engine isn't seized. I have checked the Bendix, put 12v from a different battery directly to the starter motor itself but it still is cranking slow. Do you think the starter motor may be the culprit? Cheers

Assuming the battery is ok , and you cant ever trust a battery ! Then i would start looking at the starter , if it was crazy slow , and i knew my battery was defiantly not the reason , I would be tempted to pull the spark plug and see if it cranks over faster with zero compression , I don't know why I would , but I would . Make sure the connections to the starter and battery are spotless , any of the green crusty will ruin your day !

I cannot access your older videos I have issues with my piaggio x8 initially thought it may be bendex , worked fine yesterday did a 15mile ride then went to start it up after work and it would not start, engine not turning over, I think the Bendix has not got enoigh power

Couple of things to consider on your starter issue , does it crank at all , if it does crank is it a slow or labored crank ? If it doesn't crank do you hear the tell tail "CLICK" of the solenoid closing. A great deal of starting issues are easy fixes , either the battery on its last leg or corrosion on the terminals , make sure to check those first . If that is a no go , next time it acts up give the starter a good whap with wrench a few times and try it again , it starts , rebuild time !

Tim, I have a 2007 Vespa LX150, I can't even get it to crank. Is that a starter problem?
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 6 лет назад
Could be , but if your just coming out of winter and it's not been run in a while I would suspect the battery first , make sure it has a good charge on it .

I took the carb off cleaned it as you did now the bike won’t start n when I use the electric starter it doesn’t sound like it normal dose when it starts up it’s makeing a odd sound , and the engine won’t start at all all the lights come on just no power ? Help ?
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 5 лет назад
Well with that added to your issue with the over flowing oil in your crankcase , I am almost willing to bet your floats in your carb are stuck open , and is allowing gas to flood the carb and flow down into your cylinder and into your crank case causing it to be over flowing when you took the cap off ..... Take that cap back off and I am willing to bet it smells of gasoline ! You've got some work ahead of you on this one , that carb as to come back off and pay particular attention to the float , and its needle valve . be almost willing to be its not assembled correctly . Once thats sorted out you will have to change that oil , its contaminated with gasoline and will not lubricate properly . You also may have to pull and clean the spark plug as well , its probably soaked in gas

Tim is there any way I could send you some videos and pics of you to take a look at ? And when I take the cap off the crank case n it overflows should I drain it out ?

Yeh u was 100% on the oil being mixed with petrol iv drained it n took the carb back off , is it worth fixing or should I just scrap metal the bike ?
@TimTuttle762
@TimTuttle762 5 лет назад
Defiantly worth fixing assuming nothing else is wrong with it , the floats are a easy fix and are probably the problem . I would pull the bottom part of the carb off , the "bowl " portion the bottom metal bowl shaped part , the part i am removing here in this portion of the video staring at 4:00 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-223xwfnxzTs.html the the floats can bee seen at 5:22 , the tan colored parts , make sure that they installed correctly , and are free to move up and down opening the passage for fuel . When working on it , you will have the carb upside down so take that into account when checking its function . Feel free to send me pictures , video response , etc and I will lend any advice !
