We explored a real death trap! That's the only way to describe this part of an abandoned mine that I found myself crawling through with some other explorers.After skillfully locating and digging out a completely buried, unknown portal to this frequently visited talc mine, we entered and found ourselves exploring a totally cut-off area of the mine that NOBODY had seen in ages. We carefully explored and documented the pristine drifts and tunnels while navigating under, over, and through extremely dangerous collapses and near-collapses that were pressing in all around us. In some areas, we actually had to crawl on our hands and knees through partially caved-in tunnels that were barely passable! The danger and effort were worth it, though, because we found a trove of artifacts in this part of the mine including several intact glass bottles, an old gas mask, tobacco tins, and lots of awesome miners' graffiti from long ago.
Stay tuned at the end of this video for exciting scenes from Part 2!

Thanks for your comment! You are the third person to suggest seismic activity. Now that I'm thinking about it, I think that might a very accurate assessment of why there is so much collapse in this talc mine. Maybe Dr. Lucy, a retired geologist who frequently comments on my videos, will chime in and let us know what she thinks! Dr. Lucy? Are you there?

@@AbandonedMines11 I once found some carbide marks along a fault that indicated nearly a foot of movement, in a mine that dates back to the 1880s. Unsurprisingly, the ground in that area was nasty. I was trying to access a connection into another mine, but the drift completely blew up in a heavily-timbered section and was impassable. I've been gradually exploring another, more modern mine that experienced a mild earthquake about ten years ago. Nothing was totally impassable, but the ground control suffered a lot of damage as a result. Lots of roof bolts backed out a foot or more.

@@lb1448 so it's as I first thought... Talc, being a weak sedimentary rock, naturally breaks up over time, especially when a void exists below it. I suppose in a few decades, almost all of this mine will be impassable?

5:20 That miner’s graffity in fact means “(these are)Things that happen, my friend”, as a way of saying “Bad things happen, it’s part of life and you can’t avoid that” The second graffity (6:50) says “Isaías Ortiz”, a common name. Finally, the third one (12:50) means “The cricket killed him”, probably being “the cricket” some kind of badass nickname (El Grillo -> The Cricket) It’s latinoamerican spanish, written in a very coloquial way.

It never ceases to amaze me the amount and size of timbering you show in your videos, i wonder where they excavated for this wood. The forests must have been so thick with these old trees. I've heard the wood came from nearby states or was shipped in from way up north. As I've mentioned in other replies, the timbering industry must've been a great business to be in back in the day. The wood was so necessary (especially in a talc mine like this), so there must've been great demand.

I agree. I kept wondering if this would be the last episode from our Intrepid Explorer, but obviously he (or his ghost?) made it back to post the vid. I went into a sketchy mine in the 70's at a place in the Sierras called "Moonshine Beach". I didn't get very far, mostly claustrophobia and a thick cloud of gnats that chocked me out. I had a very thick rope knot with wood handle break free and swing down from a timber and break my nose. That was as far as I went: my nose looked like it was crushed clay across my face. As I bled all over myself, I had the distinct impression the mine was whispering, "GTFO". So I GTFO'd. I think I was 9 years old when that happened. Never told my parents. Just said I slipped on a river rock back in the valley below.

@Sassyquatch1020 Most of us leave the artifacts behind. The artifacts you saw in this video were basically junk for the most part. Ah the memories of the Plesington Talk mine in southwest Death Valley. Five hours underground - The almost fresh smell of the wood, the kit fox carcass fallen down in wash, the Amodyne sticks, blasting caps by the box, fuse still hanging on the pegs in the powder room, wines and stopes. All so pure white for some of the greatest flash lighting; amazing images lit by only candles in the tunnles. So long ago - most likely collapsed now.

There is a ton of timber in there! That is so much more then an average mine. And it's even cooler to see it in such a slow decline.
@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
Timbering was only set up in areas of the mine that were weak or prone to collapse. In gold mines and other hard rock mines, there isn't a lot of timbering. In these talc mines, however, there is usually a lot of timbering because talc is very crumbly and definitely prone to collapsing. It is cool to see all the timbers and how some of them are snapped or bending. Sounds like you enjoyed the video, man! Thanks for watching and commenting!

@AbandonedMines11
@AbandonedMines11 4 года назад
I always say that all the collapses you see in a mine like this have obviously already occurred. Therefore, they have reached their "resting point" and won't collapse any further. But they could collapse more. The odds of that happening while we're in there are pretty astronomical, in my opinion. It's a calculated risk like everything else in life. But to be honest, there was probably a greater chance of us getting killed during the drive home than there was when we were inside the mine.

This really was the most dangerous abandoned mine I have ever been in. Tom and Julie did return for a third visit a year later where Tom went down that inclined shaft that we found in this video. He began to experience the effects of low oxygen levels when he was down there, though. There are several more levels below that, but I would highly suspect there is not enough oxygen down there to sustain life. There just isn’t any circulation in the mine except for comes through that entrance we used - and it’s pretty much at the far end of the entire set of workings.

I've seen Spanish graffiti in mines before. It's not that common, but it's out there. Mexicans as well as Chinese worked in the mines and were a large contingent of the mining workforce back then. @Heat seeker Contrary to some argentinian fans of the falklands I never cared about them. It's just politics, great to get votes nowadays and in the old times much of the population was tricked into supporting the war and the de facto goverment. It was a good distraction for another year of dictatorial rule. The islands were under constant british settlement for over 200 years, really and they been there even earlier. When Argentina claimed independency from Spain, the british reclaimed them some years later. So historically, they are not precisely argentine. But people doesn't study history.
