After an avalanche killed seven young school students in 2003, Parks Canada created the Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) in order to identify avalanche terrain. Many parts of Canada and Europe have since been using this scale in their mountain regions where people travel. Guidebook and map publishers like Beacon Guidebooks have since been applying ATES manually and slowly in a route-by-route and basin-by-basin method, which barely scratches the surface of identifying and rating avalanche terrain. autoATES and the new layer in onX brings this widely accepted and popular tool to a whole new level, rating vast swaths of mountain terrain. Now people can access this important avalanche terrain layer no matter how they recreate in the mountains.
