Part 1:
We decided to start an epic adventure walking on the South West Coast Path from Minehead in Somerset to Poole in Dorset.
This is the first part of our short RU-vid series charting our long and beautiful walk along some of the most spectacular coastline of the UK. We tread the path once taken by mariners, smugglers, the coastguard and miners to experience an unforgettable journey.
It is currently the longest hiking trail in the UK. However, this will be until the completion of the England Coast Path which will cover a distance of 2795 miles. That's quite far. Don't fancy doing that just yet!
Hope you enjoy the journey with us.
Rob & Tamsin.

Very helpful video, i am planning walking lands end to john o groats, but as i would fly into the UK to Bournemouth i was thinking of starting at Poole and extending my walk to include the complete south west path rather than half way along at lands end.

Wow that sounds amazing - I hope you are going to share your fabulous adventure! If you do want to add on the south west Coast Path you will be adding a good 360 miles to your journey. However you will get to collect a whole load of beautiful stamps, a new addition to the Path since we enjoyed it, a stamp rally! The Jurassic coast and South Devon and Cornwall parts of the path are amazing and depending on the time of year your doing it would be something I wouldn't want to miss :) Good luck on your wonderful adventure.

@@RobandTamsin Will let you know when, maybe a few years away when I get closer to retirement as its not easy to take 4+ months off work when self employed. Been looking at the Harvey maps - south west coast path, Offas Dyke path, Pennine Way, West Highland Way and Cape Wrath trail, joining them up using whatever footpaths I can plot out.

@@RobandTamsin I've lost track but I think it's 2000 miles from Scarborough to Barnstaple (whole coast incl. Scotland is approx. 6000 miles, depending how you do it of course). The east coast is surprisingly good in places (Suffolk, Norfolk, N Yorks) and I really appreciate the solitude of the less touristy parts. I've found the SWCP to be best out of season. @@RobandTamsin Yes, the terrain changes a lot. But it is beautiful wherever we are. A friend and I have walked from Westward Ho! to Penzance during three summer holidays in 2017, 18 and 19. But have had to drop it the two last years due to travel restrictions. We live in Norway and it also takes some time to travel so far South West in England. Our first aim is to complete Cornwall but hopefully we will do the rest too 👍🏻😊 This summer we'll walk the Lizard peninsula.

Do it! It is amazing! So we got plenty of snacks in the towns. Our camping stove - MSR was pretty ferocious so great for a quick cuppa but does not simmer - so mostly super noodles or cous cous. We used the SWCP 8 week itinerary as a guide so finished quite often near towns. As a result if we were camping we did treat ourselves to a pub dinner or fish and chips. The trickiest places to find shops was between St Ives and Lands End and Lands End and Penzance. Do you need to stock up before that stretch. Not a lot of good shops around the Lizard either. Coverack has a lovely little post office shop and cafe though and highly recommend the Fat Apples cafe near Porth Allow too. There also appeared to be a seasonal campsite at the Fat Apples cafe that looked lush! Hope that is helpful. Any other questions feel free to ask. What time of year do you think you might do it?

@@oggg4604 September to November was glorious, slightly quieter but the daylight started to dwindle towards the end. Spring would be nice as the days get longer... We had a power bank each and we even started out with a hiking solar panel (it didn't survive the train journey) 😒 We charged as much as we could when we stayed in hotels or stayed with family. Rob's drone batteries also doubled as extra power supplies when we were desperate. We also used to take a bag fully of charging stuff if we went to a restaurant or pub and most people were fine with us plugging in. We also did risk charging some camera batteries in campsite toilets/ laundry rooms over night. People were very friendly and chatty, if you look like you're on an adventure people want to know about it. 😄

Correction..The longest coastal footpath is the SWCP 630 miles. When finished, the King Charles III England Coast Path will stretch for almost 3,000 miles/5,000 kilometres and be one of the longest continuous walking routes in the world. This path will be fully walkable by the end of 2024 they say..😊

What advice would you give anyone planning on doing the same thing?.
@RobandTamsin
@RobandTamsin 7 месяцев назад
Start in the spring so the days are getting longer. Carry less, you can always buy bits along the way. You don’t really need to carry food, if you want to wild camp you need to camp between the recommended stops, if you follow the SWCP recommended stops you will end up in built up areas not really suitable for wild camping. Shelter from storms in historical inns. Don’t rush you want to remember the places separately. 63 days was quick!

Honestly we planned to but if your follow the recommended SWCP itinerary it takes you town to town so less wild camping opportunities. It would be better to offset the towns then camp in the quieter areas. We did end up in inns and airbnb quite a lot.

Thank you Andrew for your honest feedback. You know if you fancy bingeing the other 14 episodes you can tell us if we improve, or not 😉 It was our first time trying to document such a long trip and then working out what to include and how to edit it, a very steep learning curve. There are worse episodes - if you want to check out "Lake Biwa Bike Ride I don't think we talk at all! and Sand bath Ibusuki is quite a niche video where we get buried in a shallow hot sand grave and is less than 5 minutes long.
