WELCOME TO MY RIDE!
First of all… if you enjoy this video please give it a LIKE and share it with your cycling posse. If you are a senior cyclist, let’s chat and support each other’s aches and pains. If you are a young whipper-snapper, check in with us as this channel talks explicitly about your future.
As for this one day Quebec City bike tour, my goal was to stay close to the city. I wanted to not waste a lot of time getting to and from my destination. Close in camping was not an option. I came up with a clean and reasonably priced hotel about 16 KM outside the city, it was 3 KM from Montmorency Falls, and it was right on the bike trail leading into Quebec City… Perfect!
Montmorency Falls:
As Montmorency Falls was my first stop, I arrived at the falls venue before they opened for the day. In order for a cyclist to get the true impact of the falls, there are plenty of bike racks available… lock up your steed and take an in-depth tour… cable car to the top of the falls, cross over the walking bridge at the crest of the falls, and hike down the other side. When I return I will visit and linger here.
NOTE: During the video I continually refer to this natural wonder as “Montgomery Falls” - an error based on my historical research and this incorrect data then getting stuck in my head. General Montgomery was the (American) Patriot who was killed in an ambush during his poorly planned an executed attack on Quebec City. It did not even occur to me the lunacy of naming this natural wonder after a military man hell bent on capturing this beautiful city… an invader from the south. So, it is, indeed, Montmorency Falls or better yet… Parc de La Chutes-Montmorency.
Access to Quebec City Via Bike Trails:
I designed my route to traverse the main trail along the Saint Lawrence River approaching from the north but then, for some unknown reason, I decided to divert from a more direct route into the city and opted to explore the bike trails along both shores of the Saint Charles River… best planning move I could have made. I had no idea how stunningly beautiful these trails would be. I was only sorry that I did not explore this linear city park a bit more. So why is this a secret? I Googled cycling in Quebec City and got basically maps. Few, if any, rave reviews about the overall trail system and none speaking to the unique beauty of the St. Charles River Park. The problem with the bike trails? They were so beautiful I lingered and lost some precious time I had set aside to explore “Old Quebec City.”
Up To The Citadel:
I ended Part 1 of this video Tour of Quebec City by getting myself up a steep hill to the upper city. I knew it was steep on the river side of the city so I exited the trail, cut across the city, and approached the hill from the northeast with a flawed assumption that it would not be quite so steep. I wound up doing a hike-a-bike for a bit over a mile… walking up a 23% grade to the upper city was quite something. My brief time at the top will be covered in Part 2.

Yes it does… except for walking to upper Quebec City, that was a great one day ride.
