,,,,,I have read in books I own , and have seen many YT videos about finding TDC and verifying camshaft events,,,,,I have just spent about two hours copying into one of my notebooks ; the fine way you have laid out the procedures for checking a camshaft to the cam card that they come with........It was complete with steps to be read and understood......Thanks a bunch for your work.......

Hey treyschis, Here's what I do. Of course your application might call for something else. Make sure #1 piston is TDC. Make sure Harmonic balance is at 0 degrees on the timing tab. Install the crank gear straight up (you know on the crank timing gear there's a triangle a square & o markings) I install mine on the o marking. Next take your readings......do the readings match what's on the cam card? If not adjust the adjustable cam gear as mentioned(other post above) and recheck your readings

Excellent video! Finally a video where it is indicated firstly how to place the chain and gears of time, in no other video was shown and created some doubt because it was not shown as it should be placed before placing the degree wheel. The other and if possible, would be excellent you do a new video tutorial in Spanish, and at the same time improve the quality of the video due to the lighting. Thank you very much and I congratulate you for your very good video.

Hey , great video. I followed it step by step and all my numbers were close, some exact. Probably off due to inexperience and sloppy operation but that's ok, I'm learning something. Just one thing you didn't talk about: My card advertises overlap:80.00 and @ .050 rise: 4.00. How do you check that? By the way, it's a 1964 390 FE complete new build.

Nice video, now that I have watched every video on how to degree a cam I can't figure out why I have a 76 intake centerline when I'm suppose to have 106 :( I think Comp gave me the wrong camshaft-just my luck. *Update make sure you line your timing gears up on the right marks lol, I'm so dumb, yet so mad they put multiple marks on it.

I just made the switch from from a 15yr comp cams man to Howards after trying a Big Mama Ratler cam! I'm sold on Howards and plan on doing the entire valve train with them too! Comp cams used to be #1 and had the best but for the past 7-10yrs I keep getting shit parts that just kept going downhill, hell I can't even get a email back from them let alone reliable and consistent parts...smh...my last set of push rods I bought from comp had the writing in different places, different sizes of letters, even had 1 out of the 16 that had no writing lmao wtf have they turned into, don't plan on w airing to see haha Howards cams has my loyalty now and gets the 10-15k I spend a year on cam, timing ,and valvetrain parts for building sbc engines lol

I never had good luck with Comp. I am building 2 engines now. Olds with Lunati cam and SBC with a Crower cam. Both are roller. Lunatic doesn't supply Olds roller lifters. I went with Howard's 91464. They look beautifully machined and very high quality.

Hi. Thanks. Your video helped a lot. I'd try a few things and check back with your video, until I understood what was going on. One question about the duration formula at 11:34 in your video. I noticed on my cam card that the duration @ .050 figure that they list is not the result of adding the opening and closing degrees + 180. It has to be arrived at by subtracting the opening and closing degress from each other + 180. For example, my cam card shows (at .050) exhaust open 49, close 15. Then it has exh. duration @ .050 at 214. Adding those 2 numbers plus 180 doesn't equal 214. But subtracting them does. It's the same situation on the intake. So, have you seen that situation before? Thanks again. Steve

Hey grand73am, That's a good question. Try starting from the beginning. Take all of the readings again and write them down. Don't do any math yet. Do this 3 times in a row to make sure your readings are consistent. If your readings are consistent now do the math. Hopefully this helps. Let me know and I will try to help, Thanks Johnny K

John Kinslow Jr Thanks for the reply. I did some researching after I wrote you and found the cam calculator at the Wallace Racing website. They had a note that said that when you have an intake measurement that is ATDC, the number is negative. And with an exhaust measurement that is BTDC, that number is negative. That works perfectly with the numbers on my cam card to arrive at the duration listed on it. For example the cam card shows the intake open figure is 4* ATDC, closing is 28* ABDC. Since the 4* is ATDC, it is a negative number. So, -4 + 28 = 24, then add 180, and the duration (at .050) is 204*, which agrees with the duration written on the card. The exhaust works out the same way. So, that's the ticket...ATDC intake and BTDC exhaust numbers are negative.

So after checking all specs. How do you time the cam to center or straight or what! Do you time it on its centerlien?
@treyschls
@treyschls 11 лет назад
With an adjustable camgear. Do i have to loosen the gear and shake it or how do i time it. With centerline?
