Laurie continues painting the second pass of whites in the spots. During the second pass, more coverage is achieved and the opportunity to correct the shape of the spots brings them more into focus. Laurie uses Gamblin "Fast-Matte" Titanium White with consistency of "cream", when mixed with 50% Grumbacher Turpentine/50% Grumbacher Painting Medium 1 (Matte). Important to be consistent from left to right scapular groups, the size and shape of the spots, as well as their distance away from the outer edge of the feather. On a more fully exposed scapular feather, leaving a portion down the middle for the quill to be added later, adding a portion of the spot being covered by the feather on top of it, breaks up the spot pattern to be more realistic. Squinting your eyes replicates seeing the bird at a distance. It will show the inconsistencies in shading of the spots, as well as their size and shape.
