Thank you! Thank you! For this 13-part color genetics series. I'm very knowledgeable about equine genetics but canine genetics are a whole different level. So much more complicated than breeding for a certain horse color. :) Again, thank you for doing this. It's helped me so much to understand more about my 8-week-old Frenchie and whether or not she is blue or lilac.
Very nice video James. It's very few people that post videos explaining genetics and breeding in such detail like a biology teacher. My hat is off to you for doing it so well.
Not all eye color is straight dominant/ recessive. I think it's brown and grey that are. The other colors are what's called polygenic trait. BUT great job explaining everything James!! I think what you do is super helpful and for a good understanding of dog genetics without having a genetics background you do a great job. But speaking of genes that "do" other things besides straight dominant/ recessive, I think some of the dog genes are like this. For example the a locus- idk what do you think??
And there are lots of polygenic genes in coat color. Many of which are there but there isn’t a test for it A new one is the intensity gene. It is polygenuc and It works in combination with other genes

PIED: From what I’m understand is that pied is a recessive gene and requires 2 copies SS in order to produce a visual pied puppy. I bred my brindle pied SS to a Merle stud NN. Had 3 white pups, each with colored facial spots and one small colored spot on the body. Am I missing something?
Hi James and Tami Love your videos! I have a question, I have a female who's genetics tested EmE, kyky, aya, spsp and intermediate Red pigmentation. She is a pied. Her papers state that her sire is a full brindle (black brindle) and her dam is a brindle and black masked pied. Is it possible to get a kyky sable from two Kbr brindles or is there a possible mistake on the pedigree given that two brindles will produce 100% brindle? Thanks for your time.
I had a litter sire was lilac tri dame pie bald and brown had like 4 out of 7 pups interesting color brown not choclate to light but nowhere near lilac. I did red eye test only pups that showed red eye was 4 brown pups and lilac tri other 2 pups are blue tri and sable they showed no red eye during test what color could the 4 pups be nobody knows color
So let’s say I want to create a new coat and color. For instance I have English Bulldogs, neither are velvet, big rope or fancy colors, what would I have to put in my female or breed my male to, to get a big rope smooth coat platinum English bulldog. Would I have to breed to a different breed carrying those genes. Cheers Jerry
The big rope can be had from simply breeding to a big rope to get colors like platinum both dogs must at least carry all the color genes. With out a dna test on your girl going to be difficult or impossible to tell what she could produce
