hello! beautiful work. 💗 I was curious since the 1st video.. can you put dirt and plants in here? or would the moist dirt degrade the layers of sealant and then the pot over time?
@enondebelen
@enondebelen 2 года назад
Yes you can put soil and plants in these. The waterproof sealant is the layer that separates the clay from the soil and water. If you noticed in the part 1, I showed a similar pot a made a year ago. The pot and sealant are still intact. Though I recommend low maintenance plants with these the don’t require a lot of watering like cactus or succulents.

Maybe for decorative purposes only. Airdry clay is not recommended for daily functional use because it’s porous and not as strong as clays that need to be fired (ceramics, stoneware, etc).

Someone said it prevents it from yellowing or like the color dulling, something like that, so I would do it just incase!
@enondebelen
@enondebelen 2 месяца назад
A layer of Mod Podge (whether it’s matte or gloss) prevents the color of clay from changing IF you’re adding a water sealant on it. But if you’re gonna use the Mod Podge as it is, it adds a bit of shimmer on the clay (even the matte one). Honestly I want the clay to be as raw as it can, but adding a finish puts extra protection on the clay.

Hello. That’s a very good question. I haven’t tried it yet. But I think it would be okay? Just as long as there’s no direct heat or too much heat to the pot. I will try with one of my pieces. I will let you know :) (or might make a video of it in the future)

So far, this is the only one I have used. There are some comments on my channel that say they used yacht varnish? I guess any of those heavy-duty waterproof sealant that you can find in hardware stores would be okay. You may try it in just one piece, then if turns out good, then you’re good. :)

@enondebelen
@enondebelen 11 месяцев назад
Hello! I haven’t tried thinning out my acrylic sealant so I’m afraid I can’t tell you any. Maybe there are solvents out there? I’m not too sure. Maybe it’s better to buy a new one and make sure to cover it tightly when not in use hehehe. I’m a bit lazy when it comes to cleaning my brushes 🥲. But the brushes that I use for applying acrylic sealant gets soft again when I dip them in the acrylic water seal. It’s a solvent type.

Does the terracotta air dry clay work in the same way as traditional terracotta plant pots? The reason a lot of gardeners and houseplant lovers use terracotta pots is it absorbs water so it keeps the soil moist for much longer, which is great for the plant. If you seal inside, I presume that’d prevent it from holding any moisture? That’s the main pro of terracotta pots. Unless the air dry version isn’t meant to work in the same way?
@enondebelen
@enondebelen 6 месяцев назад
The term “terracotta” in this video pertains to the color of the airdry clay used. Jovi airdry clay has three color variations - white, gray, and terracotta. That’s what I am using in this video. It doesn’t work the same as the traditional terracotta pots because if it’s left in contact with moisture, it will absorb the moisture and will eventually break. Airdry clay doesn’t need firing unlike earthenware so it’s more fragile and more water-absorbent, that’s why it needs to be sealed with a sealant to make it more durable and water-resistant.
@Carcpiano
@Carcpiano Год назад

If I wanted to paint my pot before making it waterproof, would I paint it before the mod podge layers? Would it affect the colour of the paint?
@enondebelen
@enondebelen 2 года назад
If you’re going to use acrylic paint, you may go straight to waterproofing. It won’t affect the color of the paint. But if you’re going to use other colorants such as watercolor or soft pastel (those are what I’ve tried so far aside from acrylics), you must use a spray-type kind of sealant because the colors get reactivated once it gets in touch with something wet, so you don’t want to use a brush with that. But paint -> Mod Podge -> waterproof sealant layers won’t hurt.

@@howlingwind1937 I see some make incense holders, flower holders, candle holders with airdry clay. So far I tried Mod Podge, Bosny water seal, and UV resin, all of which I won’t recommend if the sculpture will be subjected to heat. Airdry clay is mostly for decorative or ornamental purposes only. If what you’re looking for is something with functionality, what’s best for you are clays that require firing such as ceramic, stoneware, and porcelain
