Awesome! I love this video! It brought back so many great memories for me of growing up in L.A. and going to these clubs. In high school, my friends and I managed to get into Gazzari's and get served beers. Business must have been slow that night because they didn't bother to really check our IDs. We bragged about that forever. A few years later, I saw a guy I grew up with sharing his personal supply with a pretty popular local band in the bathroom upstairs way in the back. Crazy night that was. I remember standing about two feet away from Bill Gazzarri near the front door and thinking that he didn't look real. He looked more like a ghost of a character from a 1940s mobster movie. Just a striking presence that is still vivid all these years later. A few years later I was home from college and went to the Roxy to try to get into the Smithereens show but we got pounced on by two plain clothes cops who pulled up and jumped out of their car when then saw me and a buddy buy tickets from a scalper. They busted the scalper but they let us keep the tickets which we couldn't believe. It was a great show. I think I still have the setlist. I am huge fan of yours and I love all your videos, especially Valley stuff and L.A. stuff and the great movie locations videos too!
Awesome; my cousin has rented an apt directly across from the Viper Room for the last 20+ yrs, 4th (top) floor of the building w/ incredible views of the Strip from the rooftop. Reminiscent of the visits there, great location walking distance to everything nearby. Thank you for the tour!
There is quite a difference between the acts that used to play these clubs in the past and what is currently getting booked there. Music in the end of the 1990s and beginning of the 2000s was a strange time for rock, especially watching MTV and college radio shift focus.
Another brilliant video! Looks like LA has changed a lot tho. Where are the Lemmys and the Ozzys of now? All those huge artists like Prince and Hutchence having wild nights in the viper room. It all seems so tame now.
Wow, this brought me back. I used to work at Tower video in the early 2000s. I loved that Greek place too. They also made great chicken soup for when you were sick.
Hi 80's guy, I love your videos I m from Australia an I m very interested in history of LA an filming locations. I love watching old LA videos from early days of LA to present, I would love to see a video from you , comparing old LA to today's, from your views on what's change.
GREAT VIDEO!! THE WISKEY CONCERT WAS AWSOME MY SON MAX 8 SAYS AND I ,.. THE OTHER CONCERTS YOU WENT TO ,,THAT GUY WAS SMOKING AND STANDING,, THE OTHER THE SOUND WAS OFF LIKE YA! SAID... OOKK !!! TELL US THE TRUTH THE VIPER CLUB LOOKS GREAT AND ITS HOPPING ,,BUT SOME PEOPLE AND I HEARD THAT THE VIPER CLUB IS COMING DOWN AND THE LIQ. STORE ,,THAT WHOLE AREA FOR CONDOS????????????? I HOPE NOT!!! THANKS..
Hate to say it but the magic of these places is just fading away. I went to the Rainbow on a saturday evening 11 years ago and the place was almost empty. Hard to imagine that 35 - 40 years ago there would be 100's of people inside, some of them the biggest stars in the world and 1000's outside wishing they could get in. There will never be another scene like that.
I bought Staind Dysfunction at the old Tower Records on Sunset back in 2000….I have a picture of it. There was a billboard for the 1981 film Heavy Metal in the parking lot.
Absolutely love your videos... I'm restoring a "supper club" called The White Pine here in Conover, NC... It's actually as old as The Rainbow but was closed in 2014. I'm restoring it and even though we're int he furniture capital of the country, no one has the "club booths" like The Rainbow and Viper Room...so I'm having them hand crafted after driving over 700-miles to buy one off Market Place. I am dying to sell the Snow Globes like The Rainbow does and I know Luke and Mikeal are busy but since you worked there, do you know where I can get snow globes like The Rainbow sells? Thanks, -Doug Rink
My friend Jim Durkin (R.I.P.) of Dark Angel used to pass out flyers at that same spot in the early 80's to promote their band and gig locations / dates. They got signed by Columbia Records.
Dukes had been where Tom Waits worked and came up with some of his songs, but before that had been the London Fog. There was a dive motel called the Tropicana in that area a lot of traveling rock bands stayed at.
When you mentioned jack Osbourne it reminded me of something similar what happened to a friend of my dad's who was working in Birmingham England as a door Man at a nightclub and 3 people came wanted to come in he said that 2 of them could come in but one of them couldn't the one what couldn't come in was Ozzy Osbourne because he was wereing jeans he walked off and the other doorman said don't you know who that is he told him and he called Ozzy back and he let him come in but Ozzy tuck it all very well great video Kurt as always 👍
I love The Viper Room a lot of Missions play there and where are Phoenix where are Phoenix river Phoenix die i hop it still stays open he was there I hope it stays open keep his memory alive
This episode was one of my fav, my old band played at all those places from 87 on up to the 90s The Troubadour was super cool to my band and we were fast and noisey, i really enjoyed this one especially big mike how you grew up with him and the bean burritos! hell yeah! I enjoyed the footage from the offices in part one all that super cool memorabilia just sitting there and all your memories, you should have made this into maybe 4 parts!! Keep up the cool work!
