This MS290 chain saw was donated to Nature's Cadence Farm by a very good friend of the family. The friend asked if I could show how to replace the motor in a video, so I did. I decided if I was going through all of this I was going to " upgrade " I went from a 46mm bore to a 49mm bore (MS390). This is a multi part series that is broken into three sections Part 1: Disassembly , Part 2: Assembly , Part 3: Final assembly and start up.
This process is very similar to MS290 MS310 MS390 029 031 039
The parts in the engine kit were: jug cylinder piston rings wrist pin snap ring connecting rod crank bearing bearings seal seals crank case bolts. Basically a complete engine.

I’m not a mechanic but learning things about my 029 super. When you’re oiling the motor to prevent a dry start put the oilin one of those ketchup squirt bottles to control the flow. Just a thought

@Willie J Masiero thanks for the tip. So far so good. It has been running for years now and I am very happy with the build. I have some more videos coming soon of it in the wood with a pipe :) ~Mr. C.

Thank you so much for posting this. I am in the process of this now. My saw didn't come with a decompression valve and the new engine has it. What do I do?
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm 4 года назад
rbbfpe excellent question and a topic I did not cover in the video series. I ordered and installed a decompression valve from eBay. The MS290 cover does not allow the valve to be accessed so I drilled a hole in the cover with a hole saw to be able to reach the valve. The other option would be to install a decompression valve plug and not drill the cover (I will do this in the future). I have added links in the description for both of these options. ~Mr. C.

@@NaturesCadenceFarm Thanks for the quick reply! This is what I ordered. tinyurl.com/qvcb5ts It looks like it already comes with the decompression valve. I will just drill the hole as you say. Thanks again!

Why do you need to take the pan off the bottom, and then seal it? Also, does the kit from bailey's need this to be done?
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm Год назад
@RDanNew the motor comes unsealed. Sealing the pan to the top end prevents air leaks. I would now suggest using Threebond 1184 in place of the red rtv. The red rtv is still working but the 1184 would last longer. I have not seen the motor from Bailey's. I would say yes it would need to be sealed just like the Amazon one. Thanks for watching and asking excellent questions. ~Mr. C. amzn.to/43MFZ45

will the original engine pan and crankshaft assembly from the 46mm fit into the new 49mm cylinder?
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm 4 года назад
Mike Sommers I did not try to fit it on there but I would say it should. I think the only difference is the piston diameter and bore diameter in the top end. If someone knows for sure I would love to know. Thanks for watching and commenting. ~Mr. C.

@@NaturesCadenceFarmI just looked up the part numbers for the crankshaft and engine pan (MS290) are the exact same part numbers as the MS390 crankshaft and engine pan. thankl you for your reply and thanks for making the video. very helpful

What did you do with decompression valve hole on block???
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm 4 года назад
Raghu Nathan I placed a decompression valve in it and drilled a hole in the cover to access it. The valve is optional and can be blocked off with a plug. Thanks for asking. ~ Mr. C.

Can you use MS 290 crankcase or you need the MS 390?
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm 4 года назад
Mario that is an interesting question. I did not try the crankcase from the old engine on the new one so I do not know if it would fit. I would guess they would since the bolt pattern on both of them is the same. The only thing that could be different would be the bearing size, but I don't think the two engines are that far apart in displacement. Good luck. ~Mr. C.

@@NaturesCadenceFarm to answer my question, (time FLIES), yes, everything is the same. MS 290 crankcase and MS 390 cylinder are matched. The only thing that gave me problems are nuts. I bought the replacment part from German ebay seller "SÄGENSPEZI" translates to saw specialists and it has different thread pitch than the original Stihl. Not a huge problem, it could be if I tried to use impact on it. Just bought some new screws and put it together.

How long the chinese parts last?
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm 2 года назад
@Mateus Benin they have lasted very well. I have used this saw many many times in the last 3 years. In fact I used it this past weekend and she is still running great! I pulled the muffler off last week to see if there is any scoring on the piston, it looked perfect. Thanks for watching! ~Mr. C.

Is the exhaust and intake diameter the same as stock engine?
@NaturesCadenceFarm

Jason Crites I would say yes. I do not have a stock ms390 cylinder to compare, but the ports are the same as the ms290. ~Mr. C.

one problem his sealer is not fuel resistance in 6 months an air leak will appear and out of order piston !
@NaturesCadenceFarm
@NaturesCadenceFarm 3 года назад
eugene kupka thank you for bringing this to my attention! I did look on the Permatex website and the product I used is not rated for contact with gasoline. I should have used Motoseal, Yamabond, or a Three Bond product. I have been running the saw for almost two years now and have not had any problems yet... I am sure I will have a leak but I don't know when. I will continue to run it as is and when I get the out of order piston I will make a video about it. Do you have experience with high temperature red Permatex ruining a saw? If so I would love to hear about it. Are there any products you recommend and have experience with? I want to thank you again for letting everyone know I used the wrong product. Viewers like you are what make this community so amazing. I love people helping people. ~Mr. C.

Stihl used Dirko HT for long time in their chainsaws and it worked just fine. Dirko HT is just high temp RTV silicone and not fuel safe but still good enough for Stihl so they would use it. Now Stihl uses Pactan 6075. IIRC in Poulan chainsaws OEM sealant is Black Permatex Ultra/Supra RTV silicone.

WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY TO MUCH RTV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@NaturesCadenceFarm Год назад
@John Bowen thanks for commenting. Would you mind sharing your technique for applying the proper amount of crankcase sealant? I know I would like to learn from your experience. I am sure the viewers would too. I have not had any problems yet from the amount of RTV used. The saw runs great after four years of heavy use. Is there a reason why way too much RTV is a bad thing? Please inform us. Thanks in advance for your help. If you get a chance, make a video. It would be super helpful! ~Mr. C.
