I got a new job fixing chainsaws.
I need practice. I found this particular saw in the back of the shop. No info on it. Been there a while. Built in 1999. Still has compression but everything else is old/tired.
Asked boss if it was okay to take this saw apart for practice. He said okay.
So I took the saw completely apart to learn about how it works. The bar stud that goes into the crankcase was completely ruined. It took considerable effort to get the old one out.
The Very Next Day the Owner of the saw comes to the store. "Can I have my saw back?". I find out that the saw had been there over a year and they want it fixed.
Call what I did Bad luck, good timing, murphys law...take your pick. But there I found myself with a saw completely in pieces and the owner wanting it back.
Operation Restore Order commenced, so I cleaned the parts, ordered new stuff to replace the broken/worn out stuff and spent way more time than
I should have putting it back together.
I learned a lot about chainsaws rebuilding this one. This one is the very first chainsaw I've ever taken completely to parts and put back together.
Some of the assembly was done in the wrong order. Some of it was just plain done wrong. I learned a few lessons on this, as was expected.
At the end, it ran.
UPDATE 11/1/2021: This saw mopped the floor with me. I chased a problem with no spark for a day that was due to a piece of carbon shorting the plug electrode. Lesson learned there.
I took the saw outside to tune the carburetor and had nothing but trouble, so I took the saw back inside, removed the carb, took it apart...the gaskets are hard. STIHL no longer sells gaskets for this, so I had to go aftermarket (sigh). They should be here in a few days, meanwhile the saw sleeps at the shop.
UPDATE 11/3/2021: Found a carburetor gasket kit in a drawer at the shop, and actually fit the walbro that was on the 029 Super, so I rebuilt the carburetor today. This saw is fixed. Then I went to call the customer, no answer, voicemail box is full (sigh).

Mental Note: Install the muffler last. Makes sense as that's one of the first pieces you normally remove to check the condition of the piston/cylinder for low compression.

STIHL recommends the use of Press Fluid for assembly of the rubber parts - I finally got some. Talk about making installation of the rubber parts a whole lot easier......

Hi. Where can one find the fluid you talk about? Did it show in your video using the fluid?

@@cboone7791 Well, the STIHL part number is 0781 957 9000. I found one listing on ebay but it is expensive, I can buy the stuff for $3.99. I don't normally stock it, have never sold it to a customer myself but any local stihl dealer can order it for you if you want some.

I enjoyed this very much, great presentation, no extraneous chatter needed! What was the torque value used on the four engine cylinder bolts (shown at ~ 3:08 - 4:09) ? And what kind of grease are you using later on as you assembled the clutch ?
@ChrisR
@ChrisR 2 года назад
The grease on the needle bearing is "STIHL multipurpose grease", comes in a tube. I just use the retail packaged stuff on the shelf and store-use it as I need it. The four T-27 engine pan bolts that hold the block/cyilnder/head together are torqued to 8.1ft/lbs.

Any reason you used the soft seals instead of the hard seals? I thought the soft seals were only if you didn’t want to split the cylinder and pan?

Is there a decompression valve on the 029?

So, you really skipped out on the one part I was looking for. In regards to the "top plate" which, as I understand it, some of the 029's use it and some don't. Could you clarify as to weather or not a "top plate" is required or not? It's basically a formed washer that goes under the clutch. Thanks!

At 11:52 when you install that rubber grommet is there a screw that goes in there as well? I found a 029 and it had screw that was just sitting in that grommet not doing anything just rubbing up against the muffler. I wasn’t sure if I was missing something. Thank you

The small annular buffer does not have a screw. It uses two plastic spreaders to keep it on.

Exhalant job, Do you recommend a good chain to use. My chain has 67 teeth .325 distance and .63 thickness on shark tooth
@ChrisR
@ChrisR 2 года назад
Most of the chains I see come in for sharpening are the Rapid Micro (RM) chains or Rapid Super (RS) chains. The Rapid Duro RD chains are supposed to stay sharp a lot longer than the others since they have carbide cutters, but the thing about carbide is you need a diamond wheel to sharpen it and they do cost a bit more to buy initially.

STIHL part number 1127 358 7703 MSRP $13.99. Any local STIHL dealer will have a service department that can get the part for you.

There is a nipple on the gas tank that should have a tube on it. Mine broke off. All that was left on mine was about 1/4" of brittle tube. I watched your video hoping to see how and where it was routed but you never installed it... you went straight from the fuel tubes to the flywheel.
@ChrisR
@ChrisR Год назад
True that, that tube you are talking about is the tank vent. On the older saws like this one the 'vent' is nothing more than a piece of hose with a brass grub screw pressed into it. If you cap that opening the saw won't run correctly as the tank will start to draw a vacuum as the fuel is consumed and the engine will stall out.
@Max_Chooch
@Max_Chooch Год назад
@@ChrisR you are correct. I eventually discovered that all that was in the tube was a little grub screw. I couldn't believe that thing keeps the gas in but it does. Man I even made a check ball out of a bigger tube with a spring and it still spat gas everywhere. Great example of a super simple solution being fantastic.
