[PART #2] Plasti Dipping the foam in a Pelican 1720 (or 1700) gun case after cutting everything using a homemade hot-wire cutter. Includes the "how to" of the process and the end results. Firearms in the case are an IWI Tavor and a Beretta 92FS Compact Inox (stainless). Silencers / suppressors are a SilencerCo Omega and an AWC Abraxas II. More info below:
You can find the Plasti-Dip here: amzn.to/4aG4mVw
Here is the Pelican 1720 Case: amzn.to/3NX1euS
I created a full write-up (with close-up images) of the hot-wire cutter here: bryanearl.com/blog/how-to-tutorials/72-how-to-custom-foam-cutting-for-the-pelican-1720-case-using-hot-wire-cutter

Very nice! Thinking to do mine. I have to say, in those moments of silence as you were spraying the song Yakety Sax kept running through my head.

Great work and love way set up the case

Thanks for the video. Would have been perfect if you added the "Team America" theme song to when you were spraying it on there.

Doesn't look like you put a drop cloth down on the table. Why paint the table too?

Great video, I wonder how the plasti dip, being harder, wears against the valuable objects in the case? I ask as Im doing a takedow recurve pelican case and many of the components are wood.
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 Год назад
That is a good question... Everything I have in my case is metal (no wood) and considerably harder than the plastidip, therefore there are no wear issues. The plastidip does not harden 100% but I am still not sure I would chance it with wood.

I think you might save some time and money if you did the first few spray coats with something like Behlen Vinyl Sealer. It dries a lot faster so less time for the foam to absorb, and then you have a nice sealed surface for the plastidip to adhere to.
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 7 лет назад
Interesting idea! My goal previously was to have the foam absorb as much plastidip as possible and then stop as soon as it reaches max saturation. Therefore, there isn't really much plastidip on the surface of the foam, it is all inside. Having a nice thick layer on the exterior of the foam could potentially be very nice too though.

What's the reason for gluing the two layers together? I would think there'd be more benefit leaving them separate. For example, if you ever want to change your case organization again, you'd only have to replace the cut layer and not the base. If you glue the layers together you now have to replace both layers. Yours is the second Plastidip video where both layers were glued together but I can't seem to find a good reason why.

The problem with leaving the middle and bottom pieces separate is that every time you lift an item out (especially something large like the rifle), it doesn't want to come out of the foam... It wants to bring the entire piece of foam with it. That was my only reasoning.

The Hard Way, makes perfect sense. Thank you for the quick reply. It helps since I'm in the middle of trying this all out for myself now. Your videos have been a big help.

3 cans????? Whoa, I was thinking I would only need one can at max

Yes, the foam will absorb a lot before it's fully saturated.

cheaper to use a closed cell (polyethylene) foam rather than the open cell provided with the case.

Sounds like you’ve, and so many other great people on here have bought foam. Where’s the cheapest, I’m sure online, place everyone is getting their foam from. Thanks in advance.

Very nice video bro, after plasti dip the foam is not rough to damage your equipment?
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 2 года назад
Nope, it stays fairly soft. No scratches at all

Hi, did you let it dry between each can / coat ?
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 4 года назад
No, I kept spraying while wet to ensure the foam absorbed as much as possible.

Can you cut the foam after you put three coats on?
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 4 года назад
I wouldn't recommend it because it melts instead of cleanly cutting. Make sure all of your cuts are final before doing the plastidip.

When you say hard, how hard do you mean? Is it crunchy hard or just really firm? My biggest concern is whether it might mar the finish of a wood stock or blued barrel.
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 7 лет назад
That is the exact same concern I had before doing it. However, it turns out to be a very "firm" foam without being crunchy or hard in any way. It will definitely not scratch your finish
@guntimes9908
@guntimes9908 7 лет назад
how long did you wait between coats?
@TheHardWay907
@TheHardWay907 7 лет назад
I really didn't wait long at all, just long enough to visually see that what I just sprayed has absorbed... Maybe 10 to 30 seconds? As soon as you can see it get sucked into the foam just begin with the next coat. At some point you will begin to see that it no longer wants to absorb any more and at that point you can stop before it starts building up at the surface.

When I was back in Alaska, I would have waited a week for it to air out. However, it's so extremely dry here in Arizona that it was literally perfectly after only a day.
