A few of you had mentioned the metric dial indicator, I didn't realize it was metric when I had purchased it off eBay. The reading was technically off .020 of an inch but as you can see it still ran good. But basically you can still use the way shown to time your engine. Thanks fer pointin' that out, sometimes we overlook a thing or 2 every now and again but y'all keep us on our toes. Now there's yur dinner!!
Taryl, your videos are as far as I can tell really the best! Entertaining and educating, I've seen them all and really love them! That little detail-no big deal, since I'm living here in Germany for the most time of my life I'm totally used to the metric stuff and it jumped right in my eyes, so don't worry to much about it, the procedure was explained perfect, even I prefer setting timing for ignition or the camshaft by angle on old motorcycles, but even they are no spaceshuttles...hehehe
Taryl, I am a collector of small engines. I spied one that you have, would you be interested in selling? Please let me know either way. Happy Independence day. George.
@@georgesabol459 I don't know if you are the same George Sabol from Fla that sells the bike stuff but let me know what kind of motor you are interested in I got all kinds of stuff around this place. I have 2 rare 5hp goKart motors here. I believe they are old Tecumsehs.
Hello Dasche, Yeah it's a neat thing huh? I fixt a ladyfriends Champion generator, turned out she just turned off ign. gas gunked up the carb and mag got wet. Worked on it on the tailgate of my truck, cleaned carb out at kitchen table, and got it running again. did this back in the '70's and I began to remember this is a pretty good hobby.
I watched both of your small engine rebuild videos and tackled a 1982 Garden Way Troy built tiller with a tecumseh 6hp engine replaced broken cam, crank gear, points ,condenser, carburetor ,throttle cable, and set timing . I had never worked on a small engine before runs great thank you Taryl you are the best.!!
Nice attention to detail in a small trade we love and enjoy. Small engine repair is a rewarding trade, especially with all the products that's small engine powered.
I have no intentions of every working on an engine like this but you still had me entertained for the whole video! The sound effects are dialed in just as good as the timing on that old engine. You da man Taryl!!!
They fun cause they last 20 years until you have to do this! Get a mini bike and beat the bricks off this motor please! It would have to be fun it has no motor oil 😂🎉
Dad had a John Deere Tiller with a Tecumseh Engine. I recently dropped it off with a man that does small engine repairs as a hobby and told him to take his time with it, and make sure it's right because I have not a clue as to how to rebuild one myself. I've rebuilt several engines, but never small engines, but after watching this video, I'm kinda wishing I hadn't dropped that tiller off with him. Thinking I might go pick it back up and do it myself.
hello all i usually don;t watch long vid;s ,,but im glad i packed my lunch for this one ,, brought back old memory's ,,,,i still like these Indian motors ,, slippers is lucky to have u ,,tune n assy ,,this motor ,, long time since i had to do points ,,but it was a great reminder ,,thanks again ,,stay safe ,,be well all ,,
Everything you ever wanted to know about Tecumish HS40 and the Grass Rats hoot at the end. WooHoo! Thank you for all the hard work you put into making videos.
Thank you very much for sharing this total rebuild. I watched both Parts 1&2. Currently working on at least five of these 5HP motors, single and twin shafts both. Newer and older. I suspect that I may have another 5-6 more. At least one has the CB points. Got to finish all before the lawnmower season wakes up here in Toronto, Canada.
Taryl ...I've been in many of the Tecumseh engines ( mostly 6-8 HP ) and found a vault of knowledge following along with your rebuilds. The Tecumseh carb is a fickle rascal , and is loaded with many land mines. I picked up a few tips from you , and thank you for them. Drink a Hamm's on me and I'll pay you for it when I meet you a Portland, Ind. 2020. COLDBEAR.
Dude.... Where was this video 45 years ago? AWESOME, (video, Audio, information, technical specs, Tricks, etc). Thanks a bunch. I have that same Rupp Hustler, bought it new. Thanks for a few laughs too.
I use a handheld blaster from Horror Fright with baking soda in it for carb bodies and parts. Removes corrosion and varnish without damaging the metal and washes away with water. Makes a carb body and float bowl look like new!
At first I thought '$200 just to get started?!?!?!'.... but at the end.... I was like.... 'thats a pretty good deal!!!' Outstanding video! The in-depth stuff about the points timing was excellent. Thanks for all that knowledge!🍺🍺
I got to do the taryl holler at the end of my repair I replaced both spindles on my Murray riding lawn mower which is 15 years old and rebuilt the carbatrader on my McCulloch blower which is 20 years old now both working like brand new thanks brother only after watching for two months excellent instructions and as always there's your dinner I got to say that too.😁 lol Hell Yeah 🤘
The trick I learned for seating the valve seat without the tool is to use the blunt side of a drill bit. You don't get the little pip to hold it in place, but you just gotta be careful not to drop it. It's worked for me every time. I also usually just use compressed air to blow the old seat out rather than trying to dig it out.
Great info videos on the rebuild Taryl. I saw some videos on setting up porch pirates putting fireworks that would go off after they pick up the package. That was a good laugh.
If we were neighbors you’d either have to hire me or band me from your establishment!!! I learn so much stuff from you!!!! Thanks for being funny and informative!!!
You ain't been to the shop down the street from me. Talk about banditos. The only place around here ya can get held up without a gun outside the local magistrates office.
I appreciate your taking the time to show me how to fix my pull start. After I fixed the pull start I watched the rest of your video which was also very informative. Thank you,
@19:26 the "Cupped Washer" is also known as a *Belleville Washer*. A more precise way of describing the installation is to orient the convex side outwards. Briggs also uses one on their flywheels.
Back in the 70's my cuz Roach rider had a 5 HP tecumseh with a liting coil on it. I was into electronix at school and made up a full wave rectifier, using a small bike battery, we could keep up a steady briteness as the battery was floating on the line. The diodes of course acting as a 1-way valve or as Taryl sed a sort of check valve, where juice could only flow one way.
That was a long rebuild. But you went through everything. Very helpful. The points suck never have liked working on them. But just learned some new tricks if I have to get into them again. Thanks buddy 💀porch pirates
Maybe you can shed some light on a 2 stroke Tecumseh I own. The tag on it reads T-642-04B and under that it reads 5966452. My dilemma is I haven't been able to decide it or find parts. I need a connecting rod and full set of gaskets. The blower housing has Commando 500. It is an outboard engine. Ran great then I over revved it and the rod started knocking. Haven't fired it up since to avoid more potential damage. Many info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the videos and the knowledge you spread.
You lost me on having AC out of the Mag but used DC auto bulbs. How so??? Loved both parts of the video and there was a lot to learn but from the wise ole' Master~! Thanks for the show~! 👍👍✌
We always called carburetor carbon maker in my racing days. Always having to adjust. Me fuel injection makes things so much easier a lot more reliable.
I've got a multimeter which can check the condensers reading in microfarads,it's just handy to have that function on the multimeter as it has been invaluable to me. As far as the brass float goes, pinholes inside of the float can be soldered up if no other float was available,it was a common repair on cars & motorcycles in the 1970's & 1980's !
Thanks Taryl, I can't thank you enough for this video as am working on almost same engine. (Not a minibike engine) Especially the governor, inside carb tube, and points / condenser settings. I was wondering if I could ad the electrical for power which you informed in the video I would need to find the proper flywheel with appropriate magnets, Very informative video's take the guess work out, and clearly identify ..... Can't thankyou enough, for all the little tricks you've shown.
PA LAWN GUY> Taryl be sure the feeler gauge is clean. I have seen points set with the gauge wiped off with just a rag after using it to set valve lash and then a set of points and the points received enough oily residue to keep the system in an aircraft magneto from sparking.
@31:40 You may not necessarily need more oil--be interesting to read the factory manual for that particular Rupp minibike and see what it advises--BUT as long as there's plenty of oil under the connecting rod for the oil dipper to reach, it might be adequate or more than adequate. Old flathead Briggs Raptor (5 HP) engines on a 15 degree motor mount (for kart racing) utilize less oil than the factory specs for the engine when it is mounted flat. The orientation of this Tecumseh is ideal in the same way, as the oil is pulled by gravity towards the side that really needs it.
So many thanks Taryl for sharing such a wealth of knowledge, seasoned with many tricks / tips born from your utter creativity & skills!; May the Lord provide us all with as many Blessings in 2022. Happy New Year!!.. 🤗🇺🇲🙏🙏🙏
I would have rotated the crank past TDC then continue till yer coming UP on TDC and stop at .035 BTDC. A tad more accurate that way. FYI you can also use a feeler gauge between head and piston.
35 thou equals 0,889 mm, but you were using a metric indicator, so you set only 0,35 mm. I know, it's not a spaceshuttle, but then, why do you use a dial indicator?
@@d46512 I'm from Germany, so I'm used to nothing else than the metric system, sometimes I have to deal with the standard stuff which drives me almost crazy, specially threads, that took me really a while to get used to, but I still don't really like it, sorry.......
