In Part 2 we retrace our route back to Freital-Hainsberg following the Red Weißeritz (river) through the picturesque Weisseritz Valley.
The Weisseritz Valley Railway, dating from 1883 is the oldest narrow gauge railway still in operating in Germany. The railway connects Freital near Dresden, with Kipsdorf in the Ore Mountains following a highly scenic route through the Red Weißeritz (river) valley. Construction of the 750 mm (2 ft 5+1⁄2 in) line started in 1881 with the first section to Schmiedeberg opening on 1st November 1882, by 3rd September 1883 regular trains were run-ning to the end of the line at Kurort Kipsdorf. In 1912 construction of the Malter Valley Dam necessitated part of the track to be re-routed. By the time of the floods in 2002 freight services had ceased, but the railway was still carrying in the region of 200,000 passengers per year. Like the 1897 floods, the 2002 floods caused severe damage to the track-bed with most bridges damaged or destroyed. The estimated repair bill of around €20 million put the lines future at risk until a successful fund-raising campaign to cover the cost was put in place resulting in regular trains returning to Dippoldiswalde on 14th December 2008. The line between Dippoldiswalde and Kurort Kipsdorf was due to reopen in 2010, but with rising costs and budgetary cutbacks, the Saxon narrow gauge lines suspended work until new funding could be secured. Work on rebuilding the remainder of the line resumed in 2014 with the completed route to Kurort Kipsdorf reopening on 17th July 2017.
Please join me for a magical journey through the Red Weißeritz (river) valley with a powerful 2-10-2 tank locomotive at the head of our train.
The Weißeritztalbahn is a 26.33 km (16.36 miles) long, 750 mm (2 ft 5+1⁄2 in) gauge railway, with a maximum gradient of 3.47% and a top speed of 30 km/h (18.6 mph).

Hello Robert, it was cold and very wet, but the sight and smell of a narrow gauge steam locomotive passing through the pretty river valley made it very worthwhile experience 😊.

G'day Tim from Puf'n-Pete again. I have had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful Railway twice; first in Sept 2011 and again in April 2016. Due to the severe damage further along the line in previous years I only travelled the first part as far as Dippolswolde and return each time. So now thanks to your usual top class filming I have now seen the whole line. The Locos involved were 99-1746 and 99-1771. Cheers for now - Pete

Hello Pete, I'm glad I was able to show you the rest of this wonderful railway. I spent an awesome day at the Bluebell Railway on Saturday visiting their Branch line event, I hope to have the video ready for next weekend. Take care. Tim.

Well the weather could have been better, but as usual you gave us a great ride. I love to watch your videos. I get a free train spotter trip around the world. I don't know how you do it, but you find some of the most interesting railroads in some of the most beautiful places. The one thing that I would like to suggest is how about a couple of 'photo run bys, as we call them in the US. Usually when we run old locos loaded with people behind them we let everyone off and back up the train. Then the train goes blasting by us, so that we can see what the engine looks like when it's working hard. It looks like you have more than one photographer. How about the other person chases the train in a car, get ahead in certain spots and film it from the ground?👍

Hello, here are two with plenty of photo run pasts - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kQB15FW_yzs.html - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j_iAcKfEGUY.html Thank you for your kind comment, I'm pleased you enjoy these videos, sometimes I am able to include some lineside and photo run past shots, it depends on how busy the railway is and what the tour operator can arrange. I am a one man operation, all the shots are taken by myself, although it would be nice to have an accomplice at times. I mount one or two cameras on the locomotive, plus I also use a hand held camera.

Hello Tim. As always, I enjoyed both Parts 1 & 2 back to back. I love the ride on these steam engines traversing the country side. Thank you for an excellent production. A couple of questions: 1. Does the train stop for a lengthy time so that passengers can dash to bathrooms and get something to eat? And 2. Can you include in the video a minuature map showing us where is the current location of the train? Greatly appreciate all your lovely videos. Enjoyed them as I always do!!
@Timsvideochannel1
@Timsvideochannel1 Год назад
Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed both videos. The train doesn't need to stop to allow passengers to use the toilet, because there are toilets on the train. As for getting something to eat, there was nothing on the train and not enough passengers to make it worthwhile opening cafes on the station. It might be a different story in the summer when there are far more passengers and trains. There were shops/cafes at either end of the trip. I will look at the map idea, if I can include something I'll consider it. The problem I am having is that covid caused me to delay my retirement and fitting in the filming/editing alongside a full time job is proving to be a bit of a challenge. Thanks for the feedback. Cheers. Tim.

Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I wasn't able to get permission to place a camera on the front on this occasion, although that was probably a blessing in disguise as it rained heavily for most of the day which would have resulted in far too many rain drops landing on the camera lens spoiling the picture. I did manage to get a camera on the locomotive for the next four railways I filmed as part of this tour, some of them after a heavy snowfall. I look forward to sharing them over the next few months.

When I see a railway track of such a narrow gage as this, I'd half-expect to see engines and carriages the size of those on the Ravenglass-to-Eskdale line rather than these big full-size beasties on this line!
