I usually think of lawful and chaotic in terms of absolute truth verses relative truth. A lawful good character says that what's right is always right, and if the country is overthrown by an evil person and the laws are changed, that doesn't mean that the lawful good is just going to continue following the new laws because he's "lawful." To say a lawful good always follows the rules of the land is to assume the rules are good. But if the rules are bad, a lawful good character will break the rules in favor of setting up a new, just, good system of law. That's why i think Cap is lawful good. Because when a corrupt, evil law was made, he rejected it in favor is establishing another lawful system of justice with Black Panther. He never condones anarchy, he encourages transferring from a corrupt law to a good law...

I cannot tell you how helpful this has been to my son's and I. We spent hours trying to figure out this ourselves after buying the Essentials Kit with Dragon of Oceapire Peak and the book is ridiculous. We got more done in these three videos than almost 4 hours of trying to read it ourselves. It gives no help as to where to put things or how to calculate. You have to already know how to play to start. This is brilliant. Thanks so much.

I've been preparing for my upcoming d&d campaign for about 2 weeks now. I've read the books, I've watched all the how to's, I've scoured forums for any information that might help me as a first time player, and I've asked the advice of my experienced friends who play weekly and your videos have been by far the most thorough and helpful. I can't begin to thank you enough for making this content. You've put everything into terms that are easily digestible for a new player like myself to consume without becoming overwhelmed while still being extremely informative. This is a resource I will use again and recommend for any family and friends who are just getting started.

We love this series - Thank You! My son is on the autism spectrum and really wanted to play DND and got the essentials kit. However, I had now idea where to start and how to do it. We have had a lot of fun thus far creating his character. What was interesting for us is we could not find the right background in the choices in the Essentials Kit and weren't sure what to do. I found the players guide online (sribed) and found the background that fit what he had created/chosen so far.

I haven't checked to see if you have any videos on game play, but maybe you could design one for us beginners? And if you can, simple tips to modify for kids! Thanks again!

Loving this series Mark, one question, how flexible do you think the dm should be with what the players want to do? One of my players, for example, wants to not start with any defined personality traits and let them evolve naturally over the game. Do you think that's an acceptable method?
@marcdodd2371
@marcdodd2371 7 лет назад
I understand where the player is coming from, but I would say to tell him to see the personality traits as what he is like at the moment or before starting the adventure, and then tell him as the story progresses and certain events happen these traits may start to change the way he sees the world. Honestly, if you (as the DM) want to have a really RP heavy campaign then I would say this is a big thing to 'worry' about, otherwise if you're not too bothered tell him not to worry about it for now, the traits are only there to add flavour and background to the character. As a side note though I would suggest getting him to pick a background just for the extra proficiencies (or you could pick 4 instead of 2 from the class list instead if you really wanted too).
@EternalTotem
@EternalTotem 7 лет назад
Hamish Woodland as a Dungeon master I will give them this freedom, with a small modification. minimum will need to ask a couple of basic questions like: Would your character kill to get what he wants? And other basic questions that may paint a small picture of alignment. I would give multiple choice to the questions. The Video Game Fallout 3 has a test to determine your skills which ask questions like this.

Also I have a little thing that I like to do in regards to the languages section. If by some reason a character can only speak a language and not write it (or vice versa) I use little letters next to the language to represent what my character can do. The key works like this; r is you can read it, s is you can speak it and w is you can write it. So if you can read and write Draconic but not speak it, you’d write it like this: Draconic (r,w). But if you can read and speak but not write Elvish you’d write it like this: Elvish (r,s). This is very useful if you want to add something into a character’s backstory where they might have learnt a language verbally or through written text and can’t do one or the other.

One of the ways I like to describe the difference between 'Lawful' and Chaotic' would be that if you are facing a disagreement with someone, a Lawful person would say, 'Here's my reasoning behind why I disagree with you,' whereas a Chaotic person would say, 'I'M RIGHT. YOU'RE WRONG. FIGHT ME.' For Neutral person, I'd say it depends on what you're fighting about.

These are great! I have a question re: backgrounds. Rolling up a treasure hunting rogue a la Indiana Jones. Indy's background is that his father is an academic and, although he never got along with his father and left home early, he is one too. What background would this correspond to in the PH? Noble? Acolyte? Guild Artisan?

I made a half bronze dragon half red green parrot lizard folk (parrot is just a texture effect on the lizard folk crest, do to it being red green he has red green and blue for his crest) and umm... he’s a little overpowered, but I didn’t even plan on it being overpowered, I was just picking it for the RP aspect. But he can spit lightning and he dresses like a mythical Viking (the one with horns on its helmet), he is a nightmare to deal with because of his ability to spit lightning and the fact I designed him after Vikings and caveman shamans. He is also legendarily charismatic. But as a Viking caveman he is kinda dumb to modern time people do to the fact he really just likes to destroy “bad” (anyone who harms him or his friends in his opinion) guys and manipulate but he is chaotic good but he is curious and will help others, like a real Nordic person during the medieval age where they weren’t entirely anarchy mad man
