I collected snow and ice when my water supply was cut. I learned you don't fill the toilet tank. You flush by pouring water directly into the bowl. Uses a lot less water.

You can make the water you use work harder for you. Use that bucket of water to mop the bathroom floor before flushing the toilet. One example of many ways a bucket of water can have multiple duties.

This is what I did; Changed 100# tanks in ice & snow; Not for beginners; I left the stool in the bowl until it thawed; Used septic tank bacteria to bring odors within very tolerable and covered with a towel; You can go a long ways with only water;

I have been like a moth to a flame all my life in the prepping department. I think it was the April 1978 or 79 snow storm when I was first living on my own that really hit home. Cant be too prepared. A neighbor had a snowmobile and thats how we got to the store!!! The roads were practically impassable. In these times, anything can happen. Young people need to be prepared.

People buy 2 liter soft drinks all the time, but no one ever saves the bottles for water storage.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 3 года назад
Some of us do! :-) Some of us also save them for dry food storage, as well. Easy way to store sugar, for example, that doesn't harden, if stored in a dry and relatively cool place. I've successfully stored rice, popcorn, blackeye peas, etc for 10+ years, without any problems, using 2 liter soda bottles.
@oldtimerlee8820

@John Beige lol I keep my empties in large trashbags that are hung in the corner of one of my sheds. Out of the way, clean and already sanitized for immediate use, if needed.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 3 года назад
I don't buy 2 liter bottles, or many corn-sweetened drinks, but I do on occasion buy half-gallons of Gold Peak iced tea, fill the empties with tap water and a wee bit of bleach, and use them as thermal ballast in my refrigerators. Water is 3000 times as efficient as air in storing heat or cold, and acts as a thermal flywheel, reducing the time the motor needs to run, and if power is lost, holding a safe temperature longer. Storing the water in the fridge shields it from light that can cause algae blooms in untreated water, and degrade the plastic. Win-win. Even food grade plastics have additives that will leach into the water, and when you have lots of small bottles, you will find excuses not to do it much. Now that my clocks set themselves, I use the change to/from Daylight Saving Time to change the water and smoke alarm batteries. 10 gallons for a full-sized fridge (you don't keep it all in there, just what can fit with the food you have on any day) is enough to keep two people alive for 10 days. Beyond that, I have collapsible containers to fill up as needed. I can walk to the river if I need to.
@oldtimerlee8820
@oldtimerlee8820 3 года назад
@@StringerNews1 I don't know how long it's been since we bought a 2 liter bottle of soda. When at family gatherings, church potluck & such, I asked for the empty soda bottles. If asked, I wanted them for a crafts and/or gardening project. Making funnels or mini greenhouses to protect tomato plants from a late spring frost. (Didn't lie as I have used them for various other projects.) Good points on thermal mass. I freeze them for the same reason. Plus, I use them for ice chests for refrigerated foods. Lasts much longer than bagged ice. And, when thawed they are clean drinking water.
@StringerNews1
@StringerNews1 3 года назад
@@oldtimerlee8820 I didn't want to get too far off-topic, but yes it does work the same way in the freezer. I've added alcohol to mine to make slushy ice packs. I don't worry too much about storing that much water in my home because we have a strong social support system here. If disaster strikes, my place will be with the CERT team, bringing water and food to _every_ house. I really appreciate what you said about honesty. It seems to be another commodity that's in short supply these days.

We live in the Houston area. The week preceding the storm, we restocked or pantry plus extra stuff for the grand kids staying with us. Finding water was no problem. I filled the car with gas. We filled both tubs with water for flushing. We used paper or plastic for eating, and threw it away. We also had water for cooking in a large gumbo pot. Sunday night before the freeze hit us, I shut off the water coming into the house and drained the pipes. It stayed this way until Wednesday. No busted pipes. Power came back on Wednesday night so 30 hours without power. At one point, I robbed the solar lighting in the flower bed and brought them in so we could have a little light in each room. We have gas, so we used the oven until the power went out. Then I lit the burners on the stove top and used them sparingly to knock off the chill. As the refrigerator started to warm up, we moved some of the stuff to the freezer in the garage. That way we were able to save almost all of the good stuff. The freezer never made it above 29 deg F. NOTE: Sunday night before the freeze, I started eating the ice cream. When the power went out, I started cooking the bacon! Great dinner of bacon and eggs! Now we have our power back, but we are out of ice cream!!! :)

We did similar things. We had gas the whole time, so a little heat, and cooking. Filled the tub before water shut off. Didn’t shower for about 4-5 days. Laundry when power was on with water. Gas was available here and there. Stores had non perishable foods and limited water. We didn’t hoard items nor did our kids. Calm sense of community! Taco Bell came in clutch twice and my son found Chinese buffet selling by pound! We got to 14 degrees outside of Houston but house was 55 degrees. 3-5 blankets each. Also had 84 year old Grandma and we colored and talked by the fire a lot😊

Great job preparing for this disaster. I am north of Houston and we were blessed to have power and water the whole time, although we were on a boil notice for a day. We were prepared for being without both. We even took 4 refugees in for the snowpocalypse who didn't have water and supplied a neighbor with bottled water. We did burn some wood in the fireplace since it was already stacked inside, but we never needed it. I had some friends who didn't have power, but had a gas fireplace to hang out next to. I told them to move their freezer to their backyard so it would be good. They also moved their food from the fridge to the backyard in boxes and kept them out for a couple hours and inside overnight. They kept a thermometer in a box to check on them. Now I am fixing water damage for a family member with broken copper pipes in the attic.

Glad to see a prepper share his experiences during this time. We as preppers are looking to see how others are families (who prepare) are handling this situation in TX. We live north. I would like to add don't believe when TX leadership tells you Wind Turbines are the blame. We live within 15 miles of a huge wind turbine. Our temps are NEGATIVE 9 degrees today. That turbines is working and spinning today. It also has worked in temps low as NEGATIVE -75 without any problems. Keep prepping! Your video proves why it is necessary! Well done! Well done!

It's my understanding that ice, not cold temps, that was the problem with wind turbines. Did you have any appreciable freezing rain that could have coated them? Are you far enough north that if they did accumulate ice, that heaters are installed to keep it melted? There are a lot of questions to be answered. That's for sure. Was money that could have been used to maintain/improve the traditional power generation sources diverted to "green" energy projects? Was the maximum generation capability of traditional power generation reduced beyond what the "green" could reliably produce? A gas, coal or a nuclear powered plant, properly maintained and operated, can produce electricity 24/7/365. Solar is limited by the availability of sunlight. Half of the year, daylight hours are fewer than nighttime hours. And, without solar tracking, many fixed panels are even further limited in receiving rays from the sun. Clouds, snow, dirt and dust limits output, as well. Wind turbines have a different set of problems that limit productivity. (1) ICE (2) Lack of wind. (3) Too much wind. Around 55+ mph, if memory serves. (4) Down time for routine maintenance and repairs. Side note: Many require electricity and fossil fuel products to function, as well. Again, taking all these factors into consideration, was the maximum output capability from existing traditional power sources reduced and "green" sources were brought on line? (This question doesn't take into consideration the growth of total production requirements over the period of transition from fossil fuels.)

@@oldtimerlee8820 I am definitely far enough North to know that solar and wind turbines work in the winter and with ice on them if they are properly installed. The State of Texas and ERCOT took the cheap route and assumed winter would never come to Texas. Climate change is real and even Texas can't deny it anymore. Green energy works. We have two huge wind turbines a few miles from my house. They turn in negative 75 degree weather. When the polar vortex hit in 2019 every wind turbine and solar panel worked. The solar panels and wind turbines were completely iced over as it had snowed for 3 days before. We have solar panels on our house and they have never failed - not once. The City has a field of solar panels and a wind turbine. They have never failed - not once. They problem with Texas is they don't want to spend the money to winterize the grid or admit climate change. Some Texans will never believe WINTER will be a regular event going forward. Climate change is dropping the polar vortex lower and lower every year. Instead of having one or two cold days per year, Texas will now have weeks of WINTER. Texas grid, houses, hospitals, and infrastructure are not ready for WEEKS of negative temperatures. However, this is what the Southern states will have going forward due to climate change. Texans and other Southern families should prepare for WINTER like northerners do. Don't believe me. You don't have to. Mother nature will show you better than I can tell you. Texans will freeze in their homes if ERCOT doesn't get their shyte together The fed govt already knows melting artic makes winters more severe but they won't tell citizens. Weeks of winter require winterization and a plan for WINTER power outages. We live far North and have noticed the change in weather. We see it directly in our gardening. We used to be able to plant our garden May 15 now we must wait to plant June 1st or risk everything freezing in a late May cold snap. Then we must take everything out of the garden by Halloween. We used to be able to go to Thanksgiving. Not anymore. I no longer purchase garden seeds with grow length recommended by our University Extension. I buy garden seeds with a very short grow season because our plant/harvest season is not as long as it used to be. Every year winter in the far North is worse and worse. We are like ants now prepping all summer/fall June - October for Winter Nov - May. I strongly encourage you to prepare for WINTER power outages as a regular event if you plan to stay living in Texas. Green energy works better than gas and oil. That why Northern states like Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and many other Midwest states installed them. They work and never fail for the small amount of ice and low temperatures Texas received. Wind turbines and solar panels work without fail in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska and the rest of Midwest at negative 75 temps and ice storm. Texas wind turbines should work with a little bit of ice. In the Midwest our energy company and State govt leaders ensure the grid is winterize and the money is spent to maintain the grid. Texans need to ensure their leadership does the same. Texas blackouts and grid failures also happen in December 1989, February 2011, February 2021. Texas Grid is so fragile the next snow storm (which could come in a few weeks) could kill the Texas grid permanently. Are you prepped and ready because WINTER is far from over? Power rarely goes out in the Midwest during the winter. (Michigan the exception because they too don't want to spend the money). Midwesterners never go a week in the winter without power. We never have the level of damage in our homes shown on the news for Texas homes. Why? Because our wind, solar, and grid are winterize. Texas needs to spend the money. $14,000 electric bills are ridiculous. We don't get $14,000 3-day electric bills in the Midwest and neither should Southerners. Don't believe the green energy is the problem lie win the truth is in your face. Green energy works year round with ice - with negative temperature - without fail.

@@ProvidingResources Have you ever taken the opposite position on a debatable topic and ACTUALLY researched it enough to defend it? At least to the point of understanding the pros & cons of your own position. Suspect you haven't. Yes, green energy does have some advantages. That's one side of the research. There are definite dis-advantages that deserve to be researched, as well. Did you know, for example, that it takes electricity and fossil fuel lubricants to operate a wind turbine. Do you know the operational life of wind turbines compared to traditional electrical power producers? "Midwesterners never go a week in the winter without power." Spend a few minutes researching the records, in individual mid-western states and the impact of winter storms. Especially ice storms. "$14,000 electric bills are ridiculous." That has nothing to do with the fossil fuel vs green energy debate. That's a billing policy issue in the same way that minimum wage or base line for unemployment are policy/legal issues. Just a couple of points, from several that could been chosen for rebuttal.

When the temperature drops below freezing, there is no excuse for food to spoil inside your house, wherein and or, because the electric supply is shut off. Just bring your food to the freezer that the deep diving polar vortex, from siberia, has presented to you! Pack the food in a picnic/camping cooler and bring it to a convienent easily reacheable location, outside your house. Don't panic, your food will not instantly go bad! Food in the freezer will be fine for a day or 2 before it needs to be brought outside. Avoid opening freezer and fridge doors, and contents will stay cool for sometime. The concern for food spoilage arises when the power goes out in warm weather! If your house is cold and and it is below freezing outdoors, then the list of survival priorities flip flops. Be calm, use your critical thinking power, and follow paths of logic. In this recent Texas freeze, I am sure many southerners, have been woken up to the need for future preparedness and general awareness. Because of the EVILS of geoengineering for weather manipulation, man meddling where he ought not to meddle, Earth's natural occurring weather systems and patterns have been rendered helter skelter! "Weather warfare". www.geongineeringwatch.org Dane Wigington provides his weekly global alert news, here on this utoob platform, each Saturday. Worth listening to. Also worth investigation: www.stopthecrime.net For future understanding, if you get below freezing temps, coming your way, then you need to understand all the behavior of water when expanding as ICE. Let your faucets drip, throughout the deep freeze days and weeks. Sometimes a slow drip will not be enough to keep pipes from freezing. A trickle stream, might be wiser, and catch that water and use it! If you have any water storage outside or in a garage in a deep freeze spell, your containers may burst. Yes, you can bring them to the warmth, but if you have no place to put the containers inside, then, you will need to drain off several inches from each water jug and bottle, to allow for expansion in the ice state. Don't forget your other stored liquids and drinks, all will freeze and explode! Get your beers, wines, soda, juices, into a situation where they will remain at above freezing temps. Once milk freezes it never seems as desirable, even when allowed to melt, to a more normal state. As an East Coast New Englander all my life, I have experienced lots of the stuff that happens in a deep freeze! I have been caught ill prepared and ignorant! Life lessons arise, in the aftermath! We got lucky, while Texans and others where freezing, we stayed above freezing, in my NH location. Let us hope this deep diving polar vortex, does not become a regular situation for Texas and those other States that got hit this time! Ok, now you need to get all your vegtable gardens going! The need to learn to grow your own food is top of the list for all preppers/humans! Get those seedlings started! Hope all you folks warm up soon!

It doesn’t sound like much but the biolite uses wood and we keep a bag of pellets. Living where we lose power a couple of times a year, we’ve added to this each Christmas. We also have the biolite solar home set which has 3 bright lights, (one is motion sensitive), charging capacity, and a radio. We have a large Mr. Heater propane heater and 3 40# full propane tanks. I’m sorry - I kept on typing even that’s not all you’re asking about.

I would suggest getting an Aquabot 2.0. It's about $30 and it will hold a hundred and five gallons of water and mold itself to your bathtub. It also comes with a pump which will help you pump the water into a picture or bucket to use for flushing bathing or washing clothes if necessary. Did you have the snow? If so we have always gathered buckets of snow and had it melt into jugs. And then go through our water filter

Hey Guy, this is my prepping setup for cooking during SHTF: Off the top of my head I have 3 fuel supplies that I can use. 1. 20# propane tanks that I use for my BBQ grill and 2 burner camping stove. The BBQ is very inefficient so I probably will never use it in an emergency. 2. 1# propane cylinders that I use for my (2) small BBQ grills and a single burner stove that I use for an old fashioned coffee percolator. I buy the 1 pound cylinders by the case when they are on sale. 3. Wood that I use in my rocket stove that's large enough to hold my 15 inch cast iron skillet. Future possible plans are a wood burning outdoor oven, there are several RU-vid videos on building them. There are also several RU-vid videos on building a simple rocket stove out of concrete blocks. These are mostly leftover camping supplies but the rocket stove was a recent purchase on eBay (around $90).
