Part 4 of ElectroEtching!! Which wins out? Battery or Electric Power Converter?

Battery takes on household current. I demonstrate how to connect your electroetching unit to your etching pan and to your work piece. Find out which unit is the hands down winner. If you do decide to use the plug in type unit, I strongly recommend doing the punched out designs using Tuck Tape. You will be able to leave it in the solution for the longer duration. Stay tuned for some of my etched designs being enameled and embellished with gemstones. Hope you enjoyed this and hope this has piqued your interest in the fabulously creative craft of electroetching. It is very safe to do and non-toxic (I will probably get scolded for not wearing gloves or protective eyewear and certainly not a respirator, some precautions are just over the top, but each to their own and use your own discretion), I have been doing electro etching for over eight years, building my first etching unit after discovering that I could scientifically first do it with my Pepe pen plater. If metal could be added, it could also be taken away. Be sure to filter and save your solution! This is the bonus of electroetching, a far more environmentally and safer alternative to the Ferric acids.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. when transferring the PNP - you used a red mat on the griddle???? is that a silicone mat? 2. I was told to use ferric nitrate for etching silver. do you the difference between using copper nitrate vs ferric nitrate? 3. how long does your solution last? 5 etches or more and do you need top recharge it with more copper nitrate? 4. Ive never heard of Tuck Tape....where do you buy it in the USA? thank you. can't wait to watch the enameling videos. kindest regards, Irene Comstock

@IreneComstock Thank you for the questions. As you correctly deduced, it is a silicon mat. The copper nitrate (for sterling silver) and the copper sulphate (for copper) is SUPERIOR! For one thing, it’s more economcal and eco-friendly. The Ferric solutions can only be used a couple times at best before they degrade. The copper nitrate and coper sulphate are filtered through a coffee filter when pouring them back into the solution container and they can be used over and over and over again. Tuck Tape is a Canadian product. Packing tape won’t cut it, even duct tape won’t stick. If you go to a good hardware store (not a box store, most of the kids that work there don’t have a clue) and ask them for an alternative to Tuck Tape they might be able to help you. In the meantime, I’ll do my own search and get back to you if I find anything similar in the USA. Thanks again Irene and enjoy! If you have a die cut machine, like a Cricut or a Silhouette, those sticks are amazing as well! Not as much detail with fine lines, but I do all my texture plates with stickers made on my Silhouette.

Wow. Im surprised how well this works with such an inexpensive setup. Regarding the etching fluid, I live in Australia, so its hard for me to find copper nitrate, so that sux :/

krystyna93418 Hi. I just did a quick Google search and several links popped up for chemical/lab suppliers, that’s how I obtained my copper nitrate, from a school laboratory supplier. www.google.ca/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=2ahUKEwj8xebC3cblAhUPoZ4KHf2nAyUQFjAAegQIABAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.chemsupply.com.au%2Fcopper-ii-nitrate-trihydrate-lr-cupric-nitrate-cl059-500g&usg=AOvVaw1KJplTqXcttQCnRHZAkmUq. Hope this helps and thanks for watching and subscribing! Oh and if you have a die cutting machine like a Cricket or Silhouette, those stickers make for the best etching resists.

@@SonneCreations What is the ratio you use for the copper nitrate to water you have stored/showed in your video?

krystyna93418 Sorry for the delay! I have a different channel I’m more active on and only check here one a week. The mix ratio is 1 oz of Copper Nitrate to 12 oz of water.

Hi Sonne, is the electrode wire silver or copper and about what gauge?
@SonneCreations
@SonneCreations 3 года назад
@Gertruida Trotter Hi there! The electrode is copper and it can be any gauge you like from 12 gauge to 16 gauge for larger pieces or you can twist a few smaller gauges together to create a thicker gauge. Of course it depends on the size of the piece you are working on. I squiggle the base of the wire back and forth is S bends, put in a sharp 90 bend at the end of the squiggle and hammer the squiggle flat so it makes good contact the back of the piece you are etching. I also paint the wire stem with a bit of nail polish to act as a resist, if it makes contact with the etching solution it will deteriorate. I use red Tuck Tape then to attach and package everything. Depending on how close the piece hangs near the bottom of the steel pan will determine the speed of the etch I’ve since discovered. Don’t let it touch the bottom as it closes the circuit. If you’re getting too close to contact, you’ll actually begin to hear electrical type noises, just lift the piece up higher from the bottom.
