In the second video of this tuning series, drummer Gabriel Landa demonstrates exactly how we tune our floor toms.
.
.
Today we're using a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute in bop sizes (18/12/14/6.5x14). We'll be tuning up some brand new Evans Calftone heads.

Nice tutorial. If I try to match that fundamental note to my keyboard then it is around a C#3. I think DrumTune Pro (like a TuneBot in app form) would put the lug frequencies would be 218/261 -- batter/reso, minor third interval.

I don’t understand why at that tension you don’t have the batter higher. It makes sense to have the batter head higher so you have more bounce and articulation, and also the sustain isn’t as long. It means it doesn’t interfere with the group and also sticks out more in the high end so the bass and piano aren’t covered up.

Yo just letting you know the description says bass drum instead of floor tom 😎

What do you mean by "tune to the fundamental pitch that the drum will end up at"? Do you mean you tune the resonant head to the ultimate pitch that you want the entire drum? And then the batter is a third lower?

Yes exactly! Maybe not my best explaining here lol. The end result is that the overtone of the bottom head is about an octave above the drum's actual (fundamental) note.

@@gabeplaysdrums I'm sorry I'm still confused. I've heard another person use the phrase 'fundamental' pitch of the drum and the way they used it, that pitch was specific to the drum or something. I think they tapped the shell with a stick to find that note. If that is the case, is this what you do, and is that how you determine what note you tune to? Or is the fundamental the pitch that is a result of the two differently pitched heads creating one pitch? If so, how would that pitch be the same as the first overtone of the reso head? Because wouldn't that "combined pitch' be different than the reso and batter head? Please let me know if I can clarify. Also love this channel 👍
