The versatility of the Gesswein Power Hand 3 for wildfowl carving is demonstrated as Laurie powercarves individual feathers on a tupelo hawk head. Using a flame shaped diamond bit (3/32" shaft) at 29,000 RPM, penciled in feathers are first defined using the side of the bit, then depth is achieved with the tip of the bit, followed by the contouring of the individual feathers. All of this is done with the same diamond bit.
The PH3 is the ultimate in micro-motor tools for powercarving. It offers great torque and precision control for the finest detailing and texturing of your wildfowl carving. The small size of the Gesswein PH3 Handpiece offers the ability to carve very fine detail effortlessly, it's like drawing with a pencil, and it's super quiet too.

your dust collection machine is much quieter than I thought it would be, have seen pictures of it but never heard one run.....very nice, your work is fantastic also, I'll be buying my first carving machine in a few days and it will be fun to play around with it and see what this carving hobby is all about.

I would know all of what I need to power carve. As a beginner not knowing what to purchase on the Gesswein website, I would like for you to help me choose what I need. It would very much be appreciated! Thanks so much!

Hi Susan... I have an ever growing list of specific items I use in all of the different types of wildfowl carving, carved with power tools. I use a flex-shaft grinder, a micromotor, various types of bits for these tools. The list includes specific brands of essential items which I have tested and use in my own wildfowl sculpture. Because the list is new and still needs items to be added, feel free to e-mail me (Laurie@TheArtistry.com ) and I can send you a more complete list including links of the items my students have purchased for learn power carving. In addition, my new book Common Loon and Chicks is now available and includes a complete detailed list of items used, and text describing how to use the tools, to power carve this one-piece Loon. These tools and techniques can be used for most any other wildfowl carving project. Here's the link for the book... www.wildfowl-carving.com/Bird-Carving-Books/Loon-and-Chicks

what kind of light fixture?? what which watt of light bulbs??

When I carve it is important that the lighting be bright and cast a shadow. Fluorescent lights do not cast the shadow necessary to see how deep I have carved or textured with a texturing stone. I use incandescent light bulbs GE Soft White 100 watts in two swing arm lamps, one on either side of me. The swing arm feature lets me adjust the lamp's position, and turning one off will cast an even darker shadow when needed.
