The Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) is game changing for backcountry skiers because it helps solve the most important problem when planning a ski tour: Where can I go ski and avoid getting caught in an avalanche? We have been working with an avalanche researcher from Alaska to use an automated model that he developed (autoATES) to produce ATES maps of large areas in the lower 48. ATES is widely used in Canada but has not been adopted in the US because creating ATES maps is very difficult and requires significant investment from avalanche professionals. Many US avalanche centers have interest in using ATES, and we have already started localizing avalanche terrain maps in partnership with these avalanche centers. Our layer is the first of its kind in the United States and a valuable tool for the Backcountry skier.
