What's worth noting is that no, germany did not get close to beating france in wwi. They got close to paris but the armies that could attack paris weren't in a fit state to encircle and defeat the main french armyies. To quote one historian "schlieffen never carried out the logistical spadework to discover if such a plan could even work". He literally just drew a big arc over the low countries and said "this'll do". Moltke modified it to try to make it managable (and crossed the netherlands off the invasion list, hoping it would be enough to not have the uk involved) but the advancing armies were stretched so thin that, even uf they'd been able to take paris, they were pretty much at their limit. They had started eating their horses and the first army (on the edge) almost got encircled themselves before withdrawing a bit and starting to dig in the trenches.

That's a bad, outdated take on the "Schlieffen plan" - which is to say it wasn't a plan. It was more or less just a thought experiment, and Schlieffen actually planned a defensive war against France and Russia.

Germany didn't really come close to winning early, even if Russia didn't mobilize fast. France had a great army, and wouldn't of surrendered that quick. Germany didn't have the logistics to make the move in Belgium work.

The only reason Germany didn't win in the first 6 months is because Russia managed to fully mobilize before Germany made it into France. In less than half the time anyone expected, the Russia army was marching toward Berlin.
