There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

I'm someone who has struggled with rage and violence issues since an extremely young age. No one who found violence that young brags about it.

Amen. I have Bipolar 1, with probable autism as a co-morbid disorder, and my symptoms hit young. The anger, temper, and aggression are the traits I fought the hardest, and to this day, I'm ashamed of them. I was a big, big kid. I don't know how I avoided resorting to violence against others, but I took out a door and dented walls by the time I was 11. I don't know what it would take for someone to be legitimately proud of that behavior. I'm still apologizing to my parents for it 25 yrs later.

Amen to that. Have had anger and violence issues since I was at least 5, and every time I got into a fight or hit someone, it never felt good. Even now, I still feel a ton of guilt for how often I hit my parents. Looking back, a lot of that was probably my undiagnosed ADHD and possibly bipolar II.

I was in the Army in the 90s and they used to talk about how in the olden days (like Vietnam era), if you were convicted of certain non-violent crimes you were often given the choice of joining the military or going to prison. So a lot of guys chose to go fight in Vietnam rather than go to prison (and a lot smartly chose prison). Vince seems to have glommed onto that narrative to make himself seem more bad ass than he actually was. Also, if your biological father is married to a woman who isn't your biological mother, she's your stepmom.
@jacksonayres6326
@jacksonayres6326 3 месяца назад
Worth noting that being given the choice between prison or the military still happens all the time today. There's just a whole pipeline for it now via the Juvenile Detention system. Especially in the South.

I'm just shaking my head at how Vincent Sr. thought it was weird that his son was obsessed with him and his world, and y'all touched on it a bit. You've got this kid who was abandoned or let down by like... all the adults in his life, who finally meets his biological father who is a filthy rich celebrity in easily the coolest industry possible for a kid that age, and the guy can't figure out why this kid is obsessed with him and his world? Yeah, what could possibly be wrong with that kid? I'm not trying to say Vince isn't weird, but he's not weird for that.

@pete3767
@pete3767 11 дней назад
I mean that's correct, surely? Wrestle-ing. Even if you say it 'ress-ling' I figure that's some regional accents making the three syllables sound almost like two, and through habit or the way pronunciation can drift, some people say it like two syllables (which is just as legit).

Perhaps weirdly a lot of the stuff Vince talks about to do with his childhood misadventures (shall we say, to avoid this comment getting censored lol) have a ring of truth to me because it's filtered so heavily through this lens of it being extremely weird and difficult to understand to him at the time - which I can say due to personal experience is more or less at least part of the truth of that kind of experience. You don't have a proper frame of mind with which to understand things that are going on, but it does change you, long before you're really capable of understanding how or why. The kind of weirdness to do with leaves and so forth definitely strikes me as the sort of thing that could be wrought on a mind too young to fully grasp what it's been introduced to.

As someone 36, born with a congenital spine defect, for whom walking can be a "retreat to pain medication cave like a snarling bear" affair, I cannot imagine the level of punishment these men took. Having extra muscle mass in my upper and lower body that stabilized my spine, and experiencing a lifetime of abnormal muscle development, I've learned all too well what the consequences of even *slightly* asymmetrical muscle-builds is like in the core, back, and legs. If these dudes (and chicks) had a dollar for every time they've needed deep muscle lidocaine injections into the sides of their spines, they would have made a year's salary over a lifetime. Also, I firmly believe Andy Kaufman could have taken Vince McMahon.

50K/yr was pretty good money in the 80s and 90s, but it isn't even a middle-class salary today. In the 2020s there's no way you can pay off a home and raise a family on that without a lot of help or a second income or something. Never mind supporting a painkiller/steroid habit. These people are destroying themselves to be, among the working poor,, even more than the working poor normally do.

Most wrestlers aren't in WWE. Or even in AEW, New Japan Pro Wrestling, or any other major organization. Most are indie wrestlers working small shows in bingo halls and high school gymnasiums. Not the biggest paydays in the world. And even among those in the WWE, most of them are in developmental positions at the Performance Center, which has much lower pay than people who actually get regularly featured on television.
