i imagine particle nodes will quickly replace this with a vastly better solution, but it's interesting nonetheless, i've never seen the particle instance modifier used before although i've been using blender for maybe 6 years :o still goes to show that there's so much inside the software that you can always learn something new about it

HEY, important when you create an instance for particles: There will be 2 particle modifiers one for instance particles and one regular particle ( particles from particles). Don't forget to place the particle instance modifier above other modifiers in stack otherwise, it won't work property + SPACE option in particle modifier tab should be local if you consider doing animation

Hi, I'd suggest a workaround for the problem with ParticleInstance modifier / Particle Info node: You could create a copy of the particle system from the cube and use the first particle system for the Particle Instance modifier on the icosphere and the second (the copy) for the colors. Then you hide the the particles which emit the torus particles and you should have the desired effect. Regards

What I tried with these was used a dynamic paint weight and displacement to imitate waves. Particles emitting from the weight then another particles as foam or foam spray...

If i am not mistaken the ico sphere is still no "real" mesh. As it's actual vertices (seen in the spreadsheet or edit mode) are in their original position. It changes the object shape through the modifier however

Great tutorial! Very informative. I did run into one issue though that I'm not sure how to solve when using the Particle Instance Modifier. When it's active, motion blur doesn't work in any form. Not sure if I'm missing something obvious, but everything I've tried hasn't worked. Any suggestions? Edit: Just saw the other comments. Disregard my question. 🤦‍♂️😂

reactor could do so much- emit from particles on events like death in particular, simulating the exploding of a individual particles! you could chain react particles emitting inf and have fireworks trail, explode, secondary explodes, smokes, turn to butterflies, turn to toilets, launch turd rockets, piss trails, fart explode, rain kitchen sinks.. you could use death/create chains to replace meshes with different ones for model replacement animation so a mesh can be perceived to animate within its own particle life! particles post 2.5x has had its wings clipped to the point software 20yrs ago could have done what it presently can no longer do! bring back reactor!

Hello, good morning. How are you? First of all congratulations on the tutorial and the channel in general, it's great. Well, I have a problem, after creating the Icosphere instance, I create the particle system but it does not appear in the render, only in solid mode. In 'Viewport Display' the 'Display As' is in "Rendered", both in icosphere and in the cube. I thank you from the heart if I can help. Sincerely Yasmin.

How does this work in the 3.2+ version of Blender? The Color Attributes don't show up in the Value Layer of Particle Instancer. Ref. ~18:08

Man, Ive been trying to make particles interact with a smoke simulation, but it has been imposible to me, do you have any Idea what could it be a solution?

Great video! This will help a lot with a project I'm working on! But I have a question... Why is my "main" particle (that emits other particles) not getting any motion blur? The smaller particles are getting the motion blur, but not the main particles... help?

The biggest problem I have learning Blender from Lightwave is it seems most tutorials are of prior versions and each version after does not have the same buttons as in the tutorials. Some buttons are replaced by several giving the user more control but making it nearly impossible to follow any tutorial over 4 months old. I'm using version 2.82 and the particle system and smoke domains do not work the same way as the version used making this great tutorial. 2.82 does not even allow you to push PLAY and watch the smoke in real time. You have to bake it EVERY SINGLE time to see even the smallest change. It seems like as the program gets more sophisticated it becomes less productive.

yes this is the biggest issue with learning blender. There is no unified learning core. even blenders own documentation is outdated. nothing more frustrating than spending hours trying to figure out why something isn't working, only to find out the function has been moved/changed. sometimes blender even changes naming conventions, which is strange. love the program, VERY powerful and I admire the open source. but way too many cooks in the kitchen and WAAY too many UI changes for the sake of... I don't know why. and I still don't get why they haven't changed the coordinates to y up like EVERY other system. causes so much work on cross conversion to and from other applications.

In the particle setting under "Render" Uncheck show emitter, and in the Viewport go to "Viewport Display" And uncheck show emitter then it wont be visable in render or Viewport but it will Still emitt particles!

3:52 I can't get this to work, I try doing it on both the object with particles on, and the one being referenced, but all i get is a constant black color all particles, i do the steps as seen on the video, particle node, math node set to divide, colorramp & base color. I don't know what i'm missing.

Fucking amazing tutorial, im learning about particles, the idea about making particle meshes is to generate more particles?, do you know a way to activate particles from a mesh, only when another mesh interacts with?

Really cool, i saw a tut of this and they mentioned this could only go 1 level or 2 levels. THey do render quite different, is that due to the axis "issue" with particles in blender?

QUite weird that it doesnt have age and lifetime, but it does know if its a live or not? Seems incomplete, this modifier is quite old i believe. But there are not much tutorials about it. I saw one which was really nice as well. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GahQXc8QQuc.html

PS could you add a piece of python which check framenumber and than add that as lifetime? I dont think they will adjust it, particles arent developed no more as they currently

What is weird is when you stop the animation and restart it, the mesh stay and also the colors do update then. But new ones are white again???

so why do you explain a method and cut at different part of the tutorial for start again and cut ! so how can we made a differnet color at the end ???? may be you should tell yourself the level of difficulty of the tutorial in the title of the video
