Parting EVERYTHING from a Projection TV (tips & what to look out for)

In this video I'll show you how I parted out a projection TV someone was giving away. The value of parts is easily over $100. This particular model probably had about a $20 value Fresnel lens. Some nice aluminum heatsinks, some die cast metal manifolds, speakers, lots of capacitors, a flyback transformer, and 3 CRTs for RGB projection. Many optical grade lenses and a nice quality mirror. I made some mistakes which I talk about in the video and also some things to look out for such as discharging the CRTs and Capacitors, and where the Ethylene glyocol used for optical and heat transfer is located, plus safety and cleanup procedures. And you never thought to use lasers to enhance projectors. To create a bigger lens ? To advertise on earth's attmosphere .. Turn earths attmosphere into a huge projection screen tv... Same way a rainbow appears in you attmosphere... I see the LCD crystals are water droplets... To Me... A rainbow is earth's television pattern... Each drop amplifying the image through other drops... I'm in the past where the future is being made.. And it's taking too long to get here..

That magnifying fragile plastic material has a film. Once you pull out that film, Oh Lord it will burn you in a heartbeat if put in direct sunlight. That will heat up a swimming pool within seconds. That's how powerful it is. There are videos here on youtube of this.

I already gutted out a huge projection tv and got tons of that solution on my bare hands, im still alive and got a ton of 'new toys!!' Especially the popular item , THE FRESNEL LENS! fresnel lens can used to project images, if it linear spray wd-40 to make it a 'spot lens' or you can spray clear finish to permantly make it a spot focus projecter as well, another use is a great softbox (be sure its not polished or clear), they can literally make a small lamp huge and bright! Photographers best friend! The tubes are great collecter items as well! I love projection tv's!

The metal die cast part is more than likely a zinc alloy like zarmack very productive to work with it has a meting temp around 800 degrees f so its very easy to cast into graphite molds with very little wear and erosion to those molds. Thanks for the vid very informative!

someguyinncarolina I used to do that with zink copper coated pennies, if you put a knick in it and expose the zinc you can dip it in acid and hollow it out

A crt that size can operate about 10,000 volts. I learned in highschool and worked for a tv repair man who repaired tvs for years and retired after 60 years

Hi! My tv has similar lenses but it has a soft rubber part to contain that liquid Two of them are very swollen while the blue lens one broke for the high pressure do you know why?

I did this too. Someone gave us a Sony Wega Projection TV, but a part failed so everything had a green tint. I thought the chassis was unique so I took the insides out and steampunked it. Have some of the fans and best parts in a box. I have been wondering what to do with the flyback transformer. I found a nice new JVC that fits in the chassis, trimmed it with wood and added some brass fittings, upholstery nails and a pair of candle sconces onto the speaker wings. The thermometer and char-broil logo plate from an old grill finishes it off just to keep them guessing. The cable guy came to upgrade our box when I wasn't home. My wife said he wasn't sure what to make of it.

I had a 1987 vintage Kloss video beam type two projector that lasted 19 years before I scrapped it. Would that have had any interesting parts for you? I have trashpicked a lot of vacuum cleaners, microwaves, flat screen TVs, blenders, and other appliances, but no projector TVs.

I don't have any offhand uses other than typical optical. Maybe use for increasing the viewing angle of an LED. Maybe focus a broad light into a point for high temperature. I'll post whatever I end up doing. :)

I have a huge whackload of red 5mw laser diodes... like, a couple hundred. do you think it would be practical to focus a multitude of parallel beams into a single point with these lenses??

You'd need around 30watts to do some basic cutting probably: support.epiloglaser.com/article/8205/75869/laser-wattage-performance You'd also need materials of the right nm wavelength to absorb maximum energy from the nm frequency of your light. I guess it depends on what you plan to do with it. I suspect they would still be too weak to have many practical applications. Maybe you could use it to speed up certain drying or polymerization materials. Maybe highlight things under a microscope. Personally I'm planning to make a more powerful egg candler with a few higher wattage LEDs focused through a single lens. I think you'd probably get more energy from focusing sunlight first going through a fesnel lens then another optical lens. I suppose it might be cool just to do a video of your result of putting all of them together through one lens, then pointing it at objects to see how well it works. It might also distort the photons though, losing range.

I got a projection tv and saved a lot of parts, not sure yet how I am going to use them. Around the screen I found a lot of Little square things with wires going to a circuit board. I think they are photocells but not sure, do you have any idea what they could be and how I can use them? Great video I learned a lot, glad I didn't take the lenses apart and make a mess.

Glad you found the video helpful! My best offhand guess without digging deeper or visually seeing the part you referenced is maybe a button of some kind. I've seen flat capacitance type touch circuits that resemble photo cells. Some appliances use them for example, where you hold your finger over a spot and it detects it as a button push. Just a guess! I doubt they will be useful without a "brain" box to sense them though. Simple test if it's a photo cell is to just hook up a meter on the resistance setting and check readings under a light and in the dark to compare. :)

I took apart one of these TVs a number of years ago, I took those three magnifying glasses under the colored lenses and had no glycol or whatever in it. But I was like 17 or something then, I still have the magnifying glasses, actually one of them sits on my desk all the time right next to me as I type this

Imagine a pane that is a linear fresnel lense on one axis and a defraction gradient on the other. This setup could be used to measure the light absorption, reflection and transition by frequency of eggs. I wonder if one could decompose one compound with a higher burning point than other compounds in a solution while leaving the other compounds less effected by using light of the right frequency to superheat one component while the rest of the solution is being cooled by an external medium. The specific compound could be flash boiled if it absorbs the light beter then the rest and if it is hot enough then maybe the rest would be protected by the liedenfrost effect.

I scrapped mine and the flyback had 3 separate secondary wires coming out the top. My projectors are one whole piece though the back has like a glass cone on them with a plug

disassembled a free 43 in Hitachi today I just kept the Fresnel lens and the glass mirror and the glass optical lens not the red blue green part though fluid got every where want expecting it though so just kept the top part now to use the Fresnel lens

Around the screen of my TV I have these little glass squares that are red colored and they have two wires one going to east of them Derek behind the screen in the frame of the housing can you tell me what these are for I didn't see you mention those in your tear down but I saw them in your TV I've been trying to figure out what the hell they're for

I don't think there is "a year"... I think it varies by manufacturer. Always best to discharge just in case. That said, you may be able to google the specific model of your TV to find how to discharge it.

Can I really just use the ethylene glycol in my car as coolant?

Not exactly. You might have a 50/50 ratio of water and ethylene glycol. The ethylene glycol is simply to prevent freezing. That said, because radiator systems use a complex system of brazing and are often aluminum components (or copper and aluminum in different components), the heated water will corrode the metal over time. For this reason typical anti-freeze coolant has metal preservatives added as well. I would say in older vehicles designed to run on just water, you could add a ratio of pure ethylene glycol and be less worried about corrosion. Hope that helps!

I just re-watched a portion of the video and caught the reference. I mentioned the fresnel lens amplified light. I agree that is technically not correct... it concentrates light, it doesn't amplify light. Whether light can be amplified in some way is a whole other question of definition... for example fiber optic network relay is taking a weak signal and outputting a strong light signal again. (ie weak/strong meaning the number of photons making it through the fiber) Is this amplification? All depends on definition. I can think of many possible interpretations of the meaning of amplifying light.

a crt produces x-rays. on a regular tv, the front screen of the main tube contains lead to block radiation. on a projection tv, i dont know how radiation is handled.

There was some shielding manifold and maybe there was some lead on the CRTs, I'm not sure. It's also possible the particles may sufficiently lose momentum to no longer be a hazard. Good question though... not entirely sure off hand.

Hi, you seem to know a thing or two about electronics and TVs in general, so maybe you can help me out (or anyone else who may be reading this comment/question). Namely, I got an Sony KP-57WV700 rear projection TV from a elderly gentleman, who was getting ready to throw it away, and the TV was working for 8-9 months, before starting to show a lot of red discoloration. Anyway, I got another big Sony TV (even using the same remote from the previous one) SONY KDFE-60A20, and I would like to use the base of the KP as a DIY stand for the KDFE, but also use/connect with audio cables (OUT from the new/ IN to the old) the audio amplifier and speakers form the older model (built into the wooden frame stand). The old one has superior sound quality! Is that possible? Can I somehow isolate only the audio amplifier, and still be able to turn the TV on and use it only as a sound amplifier? I hope you are still reading the replies on your old(er) posts :) Cheers, Zoki

I think you may be making things hard on yourself. The first thing I'd do is check the OHMs on the speakers for both TVs. If they are the same (probably 8 ohm), then you can just swap them. It may be more of a speaker issue than an amplifier issue in terms of quality of sound. If you can't swap speakers then I'd suggest using the audio output and plugging it into an external amplifier (then you can have really good sound quality). If you really want to use the amplifier circuit from the other TV, then you might find the audio output from the panel, trace it back and see if the circuit board for the amplifier is separate or integrated. If it's separate and generic enough, you might be able to salvage it and make sure it can run on the same power supply, then swap it between TVs (assuming the other TV has compatible power spec and also a modular amplifier). You'd need a fair working knowledge of electricity, a meter, etc. to make these assessments. What you're talking about isn't impossible, but it's probably not the easiest option either. :)

Actually a correction there - trace the speaker lines back to the amplifier to see if the amplifier module is separate or integrated.

I think for me it's more about the journey and understanding. If I justified everything financially I would need to hire people to do almost everything for me due to my skill pyramid. Also, I can find uses for most of the parts. As for disposal, it's no worse to throw the parts you don't use in the trash than the TV itself. At least it's a little less going to the landfill. More generally though, I tend to agree with you and fully admit it's not for everyone. :)

@Some Guy - Fair enough. I doubt you'll find any uses for any of the parts, honestly, but I do fully agree that it's a learning experience. There's nothing wrong with practicing on worthless technology so that you can avoid mistakes when it really counts.

Thanks .. it's a smaller version but I can recreate a smaller version to prove it works. Then I will built a huge version useing lasers... The projectors are too weak. Need bigger and with lazers. Still gonna bounce the images.... A rainbow is the answer. Laser projector is the answer. The moisture around earth's attmosphere is the answer. Night or space is the answer. The question was.... " How to advertise on earth's attmosphere." I gotta stop thinking in reverse engineering... It effects my forward writing. I see the secret to advertising on earth's attmosphere...

The dis-assembled old tv is not worthless crap! People who like to make things would see other uses, such as the Fresnel-lens used as a solar oven. The front-surface-mirror I am interested in due to it could be cut up into smaller pieces to make a "comparator mirror" which is used to paint beautiful pictures. The magicians Penn and Teller made a movie about the famous painter, Vermeer, who must have used this method. Using this method, almost anyone could paint a beautiful painting!!! Even you or me! So, open your mind to new ideas.
