Tube from a rear-projection tv - Teardown 

Had a funny weird outcome of the liquid solution, and I don't think it was toxic at all....took it all apart just for the fun of it, outside in a field, and when I got down to cracking out the 3 sealed units, of course not to touch the liquid with gloves on...and had let each of them drain on the grass, ok...that done, and scraped everything in the trash. So after awhile doing something else, elsewhere....came back an hour or so...and low-and-behold, right in the spot where all was drained, there were at least 100 Purple Butterflies in a small circle in a feeding frenzy...so amazing, and right away got my camera, and what incredible pics I got. Then as an after thought, was thinking, "Did I just by accident, might this possibly create a mutant butterfly?"....I didn't see any fall dead, and after a day some still came back. It's something you'll just never forget!

Just short the caps with a screwdriver and then all power is lost and then safe to work on. And vacuum is negative PRESSURE

@@jacobmartin3765 A bit pedantic aren't we, captain obvious? Any negative pressure (below atmospheric) is clearly a "pressure measurement" and the term used to describe that is a VACUUM. Positive pressures (absolute or above atmospheric) is simply labelled "pressure." Any questions?

@@imronzuhri12165 The liquid found between the face of the CRT and the lens is diluted propylene glycol. It acts as both a coolant for the CRT as well as provides optical coupling.

I think you can find Safety DataSheet (SDS) for the liquid describing precautions. To be honest it does not look that dangerous if you just wear gloves (look up SDS for paint, WD40 and etc. for reference)

Similar to radiator coolant, sweet and toxic to dogs should it be ingested.

I'm not sure what it is. Someone else commented it was a mixture of glycol. The internet (www.ehow.com/about_5894189_types-cool-projection-tv-tube.html) says it is likely monoethylene glycol.

Fix Until Broken Thanks for the reply. My own research turned up much the same thing: propylene glycol/ethylene glycol. Basically antifreeze. I'm just glad the bit that made contact with my skin isn't something that's going to rot my flesh or kill me next week.

It only emits x-rays when electrically charged not radio active by itself. I still wouldn't not attempt to power it up unless I knew how to safely do so. X-rays would go off all over the place. Not to mention the tube itself serves as a capacitor that why it has a bleeder cable coming out of it to slowly release the charge remaining in it.

I took them apart inside the TV and in the grass and I didnt expect the liquid and I was startled

I have a hitachi tv very blurry image I clean the glycol from the tubes with coffee filters that fix it for me

It is methylene glycol It’s used to cool the high power tube. It’s higher power than a normal CRT TV so it needs extra cooling

Drinking a random fluid from an old TV is not something anyone should do.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. This was not a tutorial on how to fix a rear projection tube TV. This TV was found by the side of the road and is considered an ancient piece of technology from many generations ago. I read your comment a few times and really cannot tell if you are joking that you are still running one and a 25" GE Console TV. Anyways, you can get a new LED TV that is 90% more efficient for the price of the parts to fix any older TV, so there's really no reason to try to fix it.
