When Victor passed away I promised that if I will ever have a son I will name him after Victor. In 18.10.2017 my son was born and his name is Victor. Victor rest in peace. You will always be my hero.
Victor was a remarkable beacon in my development. The incarnation of Weather Report featuring him is still my favourite by far. Thank you Victor for your personal strength & sublime artistry…
This is amazing, an honorable and fascinating tribute to one of my favorite composers of all time. inspiring to hear stories about Victor from the people who knew him. And his bass playing, the best. I miss you Victor. The original tunes "Kid Logic" and several others invite drummer Omar Hakim to make world class memorable performances, some of the best recordings of Omar I've ever heard, sheer drum set groove poetry. And Victor did it as well for drummer Dennis Chambers -some of the best recordings of Dennis I've ever heard ("Miles Wows" comes to mind) and incredible compositions from Victor. Victor also featured saxophonist Bill Evans and invited guitar great Wayne Krantz, for crazy unique stellar performances. All of them shine spectacularly on Victor's recordings. I'm so grateful to Victor for inviting some of my favorite musicians to play with him on the records he created. He's an exquisite host, bassist and composer. Not enough songs came out of him, so sad. I wanted more. RIP Victor, you genius. I treasure the music you leave behind.❤
When I was a 21 year old drummer I went to see Victor with Mike Maineri's group and back then I looked exactly like Tony Williams, Victor got off stage came right to me and said 'man I thought you were Tony in the audience and I said to myself, what is he doing here?! He was so nice to me and gave me some great advice about playing with a rhythm section..A real incredible musician and human being..
I got see Victor in “Weather Update” with Zawinul, Steve Kahn and Peter Erskine. WONDERFUL concert. Who in the world wanted to follow Jaco ? Victor filled the position perfectly ! R. I. P. VB..!
This guy pretty much accomplished the impossible. He followed Jaco into the greatest of all fusion bands and made the gig his own. What a player he was. ❤️
He’s one of the main reasons I kept my passion for bass! Victor,Marcus and Jaco were the guys for me when I started in the early 80’s! They are still my favourites! Their All so Unique! That will never happen again!
I'm probably the only one here who never heard Victor play. We met and had a short chat on the smoking porch of a hotel near Yoshi's in Oakland one night. I was impressed with his acceptance of the physical problems that were starting to take over his body. He was truly one of the nicest men I've ever met, and I'm proud to have known him however briefly.
Wonderful, thank you. He and I were friends as students at Berklee. He lived in the dorm room next to me for the whole school year. So many stories. I wish I'd kept in touch.
I saw every Weather Report tour after Jaco left. There was a lot of skepticism, disappointment around. From the first moment I heard Victor, I stopped missing Jaco. He had the hugest shoes of all time to fill, and he did so and more. While one still thought of Jaco, Victor's answer was always just as good. So overlooked when folks talk bass now, but not by the best musicians of his time -- he never stopped working until he got sick, everyone wanted him. RIP Victor
@@trevorwilliamson2462 The first time I saw Weather Report in New Orleans, Victor Bailey was the new bassist. The big question on the way to the concert was, could anyone replace Jaco? At the end of the concert, it was clear - he had added a new dimension to Weather Report. He was as good as Jaco, just different. Like Jaco, he had his own style. What a musician - always a thrill to listen to him.
@@trevorwilliamson2462 ..i was blessed to have played in a group with Victor for almost a year while we were at Berklee..we played at Pooh’s Pub in Kenmore Square a few times too..we hit it off after meeting in a class or ensemble, and discovered that we were both named Victor and both from Philly!!.. i think about him all the time..stay safe and stay strong Trevor..jazz lives..New York November 9, 2021..
Oh man! So glad that first of all, someone or ones had the foresight and the sensitivity to put this tribute together and second of all I have to thank you Trevor Williamson for sharing this with the world! Can't believe that I'm just getting around to seeing this, again, thank you!
First saw Victor in Boston rehearsing with Tiger Okoshi, I believe Tommy Campbell was on drums but not sure about the rest of the band. I remember being mesmerized by Victor. He looked so comfortable with that red bass, grooving his ass off with a sound that blew me away. I recently bought a bass & the first guy I'm checking out is Victor, that's how I got here. Got to learn from the Masters! So glad I was able to hang with him a bit at Berklee & in New York.
Went past a club called Charlie Wright’s tonight , remembered when Victor brought his group there and smashed it . Saw Victor at Ronnie Scott’s and at the Jazz Café with Larry Correyl and it was always an outstanding experience. Just remembering all the gigs I saw him on , with Zawinul at Ronnie Scott’s was another top class session. Fast city
Thanks for posting. When his sister speaks towards the end I finally started tearing up. Wish I could have seen him perform live, will start trying to learn his stuff RIP
The one and only Victor Bailey, was very dear to me! We were very close for several years. He was such a real and straight forward cool young guy when we met. He was so, so talented and confident but he was also kind, funny as hell and a real Philly guy, no matter where he was! I met him through Leonard Doc Gibbs one evening at a club Victor was playing at and we hit if off right away! He was so outspoken and sure of himself, as soon as we met, he said give me your number, while handing me a pen! then he quickly yelled over to Doc " Man, what are you doing with her? "You're married! I was shocked and it was funny! That was the beginning of our longtime relationship, friendship and love for each other. When he toured with Madonna's Girlie Tour it was Amazing! He invited me to come see him play 2 nights in a row front of stage at Madison Square Garden, he then took me back stage to meet the Madonna herself ! He loved that I was there to see him in all his Glory! Doing and being not Jazzy, not Weather Report Victor, but Victor! He used to tell me in the early 90's, at one of our favorite spots on the water at South Street Seaport, that If we get old and we're still single, we will just marry each other! :) I saw him play in many different cities here in the states and in Japan. I saw him play the Blue Note NYC and Tokyo over a dozen times with Weather Report and countless other's Joe Zawinul was like a father to him, and when Joe passed it was really tough on Victor. In 2009 Victor came to my 50th Birthday party in Fort Green Brooklyn, and the following year I went to his 50th just a few blocks away. I had been (coincidently) married to another great bass player at the time, and of course they knew each other.... I often smile when I think of him and the great memories of knowing him as a man and as the amazing musician (He loved to Solo) he was, but then I feel sorrow, regret and sadness, because I wasn't able to be there for him when he was really sick and at the end. I will always love you Victor and you know that.
you guys /gals are giants in your own rights. luv you all. vics brother doc bailey. still to painful for me. to my sister. haven't seen her in a while. love you.
..hi Morris Bailey..i had the honor of of jamming and playing in a group with Victor for almost a year while we are at Berklee back in the day..he was a great human being and a great musician!..i realized that right away man..a great inspiration for me still..hope you are ok..stay safe and stay strong..jazz lives..New York November 9, 2021..
@@bobbybroom3385 ..greetings Bobby Broom!..first saw you play live at the old Boylston St building at a presentation for incoming students one day!..you were one of the first guys i heard after arriving in Boston at the time and i remember it was mind blowing for a three chord rock cat at the time!..Victor used to talk about you alot man, i remember that..hope you’re well!..stay safe and stay strong..jazz lives..November 9, 2021..
Only got to see Victor live once with Steps Ahead at Avery Fisher Hall! Tried to get backstage after the show to meet him but to no avail! Still amazed by his compositions on his solo records! We miss you Vic!
I met Victor at a gig he was playing in Pasadena that was part of a series hosted by David Cherry in the late 1990s. I didn’t even know who he was, but he had just played an amazing solo. He was super nice. As a guitarist I was curious about getting a bass. He suggested I get any jazz style bass and put some EMGs in it. I got a Squier and put the EMGs in it. Still don’t sound like Victor Bailey, but I think about that nice, talented man every time I pick up the instrument.
775 views ? What is wrong ? Great tribute to one of the greats . I mean Jaco was way up there and we all know that but then Victor joined Weather Report and no complaints ha ha . Domino theory , Sporting Life were great great records , Procession was top class then This is This with Santana! All great stuff . Wish I could find a copy of Bobby Brooms first lp on which if I remember correctly Victor played some bass! The George Howard nice place to be lp was another classic , I can remember listening to that on a friends cassette Walkman and thinking this is the coolest thing going. Seeing Victor live with Weather Update at Hammersmith Odeon in 1986 was the coolest. I’m such a fan , check out the comment Victor left on my Jacos the best RU-vid video , Victor said jaco is one of us ! That’s me and him and jaco ! Can you imagine how I felt ? It’s not true but it was nice for him to say it . But it was years of practice to get .... god bless you Victor, wish you were here x
