He's actually correct cuz he said that the magic of spells are created by the spirits of the fade do if his friend uses it and he's a spirit hybrid thing it probably really can't hurt him
I love how earnest he is when he says it too. He really is trying to convince Varric it is true. Which it would be if Varric actually believed it but that's not my point. So yeah
@@PlanetLovingMom Kreia was an anti-hero, not truly a villain, people seem to forget that without her Nihilus would've easily devoured the entire Galaxy before she even had a chance to kill the force Plus, she's not wrong about the force, it IS cruel how it shapes everything instead of free will being everyone's right, now that I think about it her plan isn't that different from Solas'
You forgot one between Dorian and Cole. (upon entering the kitchen in the Winter Palace) Cole: "Breath painful, stabbing, and then real stabbing, lungs full, frothing, scent of apples as it all goes black." Dorian: "Death by apple pie," a lovely poem by our dear friend Cole.
@@PunkRockZombie205 IKR 🤣 , first time playing Dragon Age series from Inquisition have started just now and I really enjoy this type of game, will go backward to Origins and 2 after I finish this..
+timemonkey he doesn't have either the Elven "gods" were just extremely powerful mages who called themselves gods solas says this himself also they can be killed and defeated.
Cole: Your knife is big. Blackwall: It's a sword. Cole: It's bigger than mine. Blackwall: And now you've made it awkward... God, Cole's the best character ever!
Vivienne - "You should not encourage that thing" Cole - "Solas isn't a thing" Solas - "Well said" I lost my shit and laughed uncontrollably. This was funny
ive never used Vivienne within my party (but im always friendly with her) so ive never got this! this is hilarious! cole is so innocent and solas seems quite proud in this moment
Blackwall - " hey cole, say something interesting." Cole - " something interesting. " Blackwall -" I guess I deserved that one." HAHAHA cole is a troll.
Blackwall - "Your fine Cole, even with some of things that come out of your mouth." Cole - "There was once a man with bees coming out his mouth" Blackwall - "That's what I'm talking about..."
"Cole, you should be careful dancing around with those daggers when I'm throwing fire." "It won't hurt me, it's friendly fire." Oh my God, Cole, you slay me!!
Cole-"I had to fight a rat for it." Cassandra-"Oh, thank you Cole." Cole-"He wasn't a very big rat." Dammit Cole, stahp, my heart can't take your adorableness.
Aknaught92 I loved his conversations with Blackwall. Sometimes I wished I could give that Warden a hug, Cole sounded like he would do the same - just to make the pain go away as he would describe it.
The villan is still corfy face idk what you talk about lol. The next dragon age doesnt even have an actual villan yet just some plot waiting yet to be written perfectly
1:19:17 *Cole:* "The Iron Bull, do you ever worry that a demon could be standing off to the left where your eye can't see?" *Iron Bull:* "Well I Do Now" ಠ_ಠ
*44:49**-**45:00* Vivienne: My dear Dorian, what did you think of little Sera's last Red Jenney mission? Dorain: I call it medium. Vivienne: Medium, my dear..? Dorian: Yes! It wasn't rare and it certainly wasn't well done. LMAO!!! 😂🤣
Waldorf: What was that? Statler: It's called the medium sketch. Waldorf: The medium sketch? Statler: Yeah, it wasn't rare, and it certainly wasn't well done. Both: DOHOHOHOHOHO!
Cole: "They're dragon horns, not bull horns. You should've named yourself The Iron Dragon." Bull: "Well............ Shit! That would've been better!" I'm done! hahahahahahaha XD
It would have been funny if that poke fun at that trope. Iron Bull: Yeah, I noticed. But everyone calls themselves a Dragon of some sort, it's kinda tired honestly. But Bull? That nicknames still got stone good milage on it and it is still terrifying. You wouldn't pick a fight with a Dragon, but you also wouldn't pick a fight with a Bull.
Dorian - “Ah, Solas. You startled me. You’re always so nondescript.” Solas - “Speak up. I can’t hear you over your outfit.” Makes me laugh every time 😂
@@shoyohinata3462 Funnily enough I put them all in the same cloth and metal. This line cracked me up especially since they were both in the same exact outfit.
9 interesting companions with great dialogue: *exists* Everyone: Cole: *breathes* Everyone: *holding their cameras up sobbing* "YOU'RE DOING GREAT SWEETIE"
Someone straight up played the dialogue over top of a game they had programmed with every single move. Props to BioWare for not just calling out random moves
Dorian: I’m curious about you, that’s why I’m asking so many questions! Cole: :0 Im curious about you! Can I ask you questions? Dorian: Sure! Go ahead! Cole: great :) Why are you mad at your dad
Varric: "Look seeker, if you love a character you give them pain, ruin their lives, make them suffer... Maybe throw in an heroic death" Varric: "I like the stories where the villain was the man beside you the whole time. The best villains don't see themselves as evil. They're fighting for a good cause and willing to get their hands dirty" Solas: "we all have a face we want to show and a face we do not." UGH BIOWARE. I HATE YOU.
Varric: Alright who's the toughest, Liliana, Josephine, or Cassandra? Cassandra: I'm right here you know! Varric: that doesn't mean it rules you out. Solas: what about Cullen? Varric: who? Curly? They just keep him around because he looks pretty.
Varric is not wrong. Cullen is very pretty. But my bet is between Cassandra and Leliana. Leliana is versed in both politics and combat. Cassandra is likewise, but as a warrior instead of a rogue.
@@Witzke231 Let's not forget Josephine. She is much younger than Leliana and Cassandra but she is also a noble like Cassandra and well versed in the game. She has a lot of potential. She is also the only one who is business-minded. Is it not more impressive to turn an enemy into a friend than it is to kill them? Everyone has a price. I wonder what would've happened if Josie had become the Inquisitor? Corypheus would probably lose both of his generals through well timed dinner parties.
@@kraziiXIII actually Leliana is the toughest of them all. She’s survived quite a lot of events, the most important one being the 5th Blight after the complete and utter disaster at Ostagar instigated by Loghain.
If only the game hadn’t been so buggy when it was first released, I once broke through the world barrier in the redcliffe map and got to areas you don’t normally have access to without cheats or mods, it was awesome but I do wish it wasn’t so glitchy like it is
Vivienne warms to him, but she recognizes a very real danger most fans fail to appreciate: Cole can become a demon and kill unceremoniously. She's not only been taught to fear demons and spirits, for they'll tempt and raze, but she has witnessed their destruction and warned others of it. And even SHE warms up to Cole at the end, learning that there's a grey she never appreciated before, even if there's a danger companionship can't remove.
I think he made a very good point though. Arlanthan at its time is no more innocent than Tevinter, all Empires rise and falls and has its fair shares of right and wrongs.
Claramata Vivienne is a a very very very stern woman who doesn’t like to show her true emotions(look into some of her banter with Cole Dorian and Cassandra and Blackwall.
I love everything about Cole and I am flabbergasted with how much full of soul his dialogues are, and with his beautiful voice acting. They genuinely gave a body, a face and a voice and made Compassion, a concept, into a living being. This talent IS Bioware. It kills me to see how everything EA touches ends up rotting away, but I hope Bioware finds itself again.
I read somewhere Cole was written based on how a person in the autism spectrum would act. Or something like that. It makes sense, though! But yes, I think he is one of the best, if not THE best, written character in Inquisition. I love him 😍
@@PlanetLovingMom That makes sense. I'm an Aspie myself and nothing like Cole, but some people with proper autism can get like this (Joe from The A Word is a great fictional example).
I could listen to Cole all day - His banter with almost every other character fleshes them out so subtly. Special tip of Cole's hat to Solas/Cole, Vivienne/Cole, Dorian/Cole, Blackwall/Cole. Especially making Dorian cry at 2:00
Dorian-Cole is absolutely amazing! In fact, all of Dorian's banter is wonderful, his VA is so masterful. I LOVE Solas/Dorian, how they geek out over the Fade together, lol.
I like it when he makes references on different series when you go to talk to him in the tavern. "He teaches them to fight with a secret flaw, part of a glorious strategy."-Jade Empire "He was their enemy the whole time, but she made him forget, so he could change."-Knights of the Old Republic "There is no other man. He becomes the other man to do the things he can't."-Fight Club "He didn't kill his father. He was his father."-Star Wars "He was dead the whole time, he didn't know."-The Sixth Sense "They don't know, but it's made of people."-Soylent Green
Overlord0011 i loved the soylent green reference, i wasn't expecting it and i think i laughed for an hour. The fight club one didn't click and it should have.
Overlord0011 ""There is no other man. He becomes the other man to do the things he can't."-Fight Club" I always though he was talking about Blackwall there.
NU121493255 Nah, if you listen to the banter, you hear how *SPOILERS!* Cole never considered Blackwall as being Rainier, but as the one that killed Rainier.
On my very first playthrough of DAI, I ended up putting him in my party for a while alongside Dorian and The Iron Bull. Once Bull and Cole started bonding despite Bull's clear discomfort with anything spirited or demon-y, I was sold. Cole is my boy. I will fight for him.
I'm glad there are more video game developers that remember that your party members are people who can form their own opinions about the world around them. If you'd like a recommendation on another series with party banter, you should try the Tales of series. Their version of banter takes the form of these "skits" that play conversations while using animated portraits. Tales of Vesperia has hundreds of them!
“Tell me Cole, did you sense anything in Erimond? Any secret pain?” “No. Erimond was an arsehole.” That’s right my son. No redemption story for a mustache twirling bad guy
@@B-rex395 agreed, but if you do it, and you sided with the mages, well they don't remain so loyal judging by war table missions. Best just lop his head off, even if its giving him what he wants.
I just played through the game with only Varric Solas and Cassandra. I wanted to hear what the rest would sound like and my god it's all gold as when I listened to Varric's sarcasm and wit or Solas's introspective.
Cole talking about the Tamassran's thoughts when Bull leaves the Qun are really eye opening. She was happy he escaped. There's waaay more dissent in Par Vollen than the Qunari let on.
@@lewismartin3430 Likewise. I always meta-view it a my characters don't trust the Qunari as is, and getting Bull to side more with his new home, and the Chargers as his family, is the better way.
@@lewismartin3430 Spoilers I did once, was awful. I regretted it once he busted in. Was not worth anything. I cried for a solid 20 minutes...romancing him was the worst idea too,
Actually do you need a hat i can help you with that(then proceeds to fix his life and show him that his father did truly love him(not cole the person he is helping)
When Cole explains the Joke to Sera he says "Cullen explains it better". Does that mean Cullen regularly explains things to Cole? Just jokes or other things too? Either way, the mental image is incredibly cute
+Iluvatar Erú or it shows just how smart they are. While I admit The Witness isn't as grand scale as some claim I think you underestimate Undertale a bit. I might be biased cause I love mediums that break the fourth wall but Undertale was inspired by one of the most respected RPGs of all time, Earthbound. It changed up the combat system to fit the universe and even broke it's own rules to show it's unique side. Hate it all you want but do not say the game is nothing but meme infestation when it is less filled with pop culture references than what inspired it. Not to mention the soundtrack is so damn good. The game had one creator who did the story, drew some characters and wrote all the music with little help. That is dedication and it did it's intended job.
***** First off the word is spelled metaphors not metaphores. If you are going to insult one of the most effective literary devices out there then at least spell it correctly. Secondly learn how to actually make a point cause you jumbled a bunch of crap to try and defend your opinion. Learn the definition of metaphor before insulting it. The word means a comparison without using the words like or as. What you claimed they were spouting as metaphors were in fact memes which if we look through the history of gaming the memes inspired shows the game made an impact. I mean Skyrim revolutionized dragons in combat for RPGs yet we also earned the arrow to the knee meme. So sure the game has a few memes like you're going to have a bad time. Does that detract from the game? No. What I'd love to know is why you think the fact the community has in jokes makes it a bad game. Portal has the cake is a lie and yet that game is hard for a lot of people who don't do great with puzzles but also provides witty NPC banter. So Toby Fox is the devil for making a good game that is fun to a lot of people? Wow I thought the point of games was to make you enjoy yourself and on occasion think. Undertale and Portal both display this. Portal makes you think outside the box to solve problems while Undertale makes you question RPG logic where most RPGs always have you killing the enemies to get better. Undertale makes you think about why we have that system and goes against the mold by giving you alternatives. It took a genre and gave it a concept that will affect the rest of that genre for years to come. If anything Toby Fox did he made people think. And that is what a good game should do. Make the gamer think about a concept or idea. Sorry but dude you need to learn about what makes a good game. Have your opinion but don't defend it so poorly and stay on point when you do try.
***** I love how you assume that I think memes are culturally enriching when I never implied that at all. I said they came out of games people consider groundbreaking. While Undertale was not the first to do what it did it brought the genre back to the playing field. People do enjoy games like it, Earthbound or Mother 3. Please ask any gamer with any cred within JRPG or western RPG realms and tell me they have not played Earthbound or at least know of it's historical significance in gaming. Toby Fox made a spiritual successor of sorts with a rather compelling story to it. When a game makes you feel like a total asshole for killing anything within it(minus Flowey cause hey he's a dick and everyone knows it) you know you did a good job.Oh yes because you are such a cultured snob to think anything not made before 2000 was any good. Gonna go cry about how today's gamers are all generalized as idiots? Sorry but dude I've been gaming since the 90's and I know a thing or two about what is good and what isn't. Also Skyrim's dragons though rather easy to fight as you leveled(except maybe the DLC dragon types for awhile) were revolutionary into making the ones in later RPGs what they are today. Sure it wasn't perfect but it stepped up the bar for the creature being an enemy on screen. Please actually give me real reasons as to why today's gamers are stupid because you haven't once proven that point or given me any real reason that games like Undertale are bad. I can accept hate for a game I love but will never understand blind rage over something without even bothering to try and realize why people like it. There are reasons Skyrim has lasted and is still having mods made for additional content and fun skins for things done all the time. Good games last while others fade away. But by all means explain yourself. Bet you are just another fake hipster gamer who doesn't know a thing about the history of video games.
Iron Bull: “Sera, I had a thought. The next time we run into a line of enemies, I’ll pick you up and throw you. Sera: “Get off.” Bull: “No, this could work. I loft you over the front ranks, you land behind them to flank- mayhem ensues.” Sera: “I can’t fly, you daft tit!” Bull: “Think of the mayhem, Sera. MAYHEM!”
viviene: you lack proper magical training solas: no im only an elven god born in a civilasation where everything was done with magic ruled by mages strong enough to be considered gods whom i lead a rebellion against and whose civilisation i shattered leading to the the creation of the fade and the moxern world vivienne: yeah but u didnt learn how to do it in the circle
+imAChristian I mean his character is amazing but stats wise he sucks since he can't use crafted bows and the Artficier tree is the weakest of the three rogue specializations.
Blackwall: “They say your family nearly drove the dragons into extinction. Shame, that. Majestic beasts.” Cassandra: “Majestic? Say that after you see a pile of dragon sh*t bigger than your house.”
Yeah. Often missed fantasy stuff, how big is x creatures shit. How scary would that be? Imagine being a farmer and walking out to your field, only to look up and see a black figure in the sky flying by and then seconds later a pile of shit the size of your house lands on you like bird shit.
it's dialogue like this that makes me ummed how boring The Outer World's dialogue was. I mean, this gang of misfits in Inquisition is fucking HILARIOUS
+Loveunit go to the journal entries > finished quests and make sure you go through all of the entries, don't leave anything unread (= the ones left with a golden mark). That should trigger the banter again. :)
***** Been doing that constantly, I do get banter, but it's not as often as it used to be in the previous games. It triggers quite often in the beginning, when it was only Solas, Varric and Cassandra as party members, but after Val Royeaux it began to feel rare.
I JUST realized that Cole is talking about Merrill with the "If you don't get some sunshine you'll wilt" thing when Varric asks him how he is. ughhh I love listening to Cole and picking apart everything he says, I swear there are always more little references to find :P
Okay, honestly, the conversations between Cole and Dorian regarding Dorian's father just... kill me. They make my heart break every freaking time I hear them. I WANT TO HUG THEM BOTH.
Cole: "But you hate demons." Iron Bull: "Listen, Cole; you might be a weird, squirrely kid, but you're MY weird, squirrely kid." I'm beginning to believe that what Jason Nakao said was not only spot-on, but reflects almost a Sten-sort of distanced, but lovable, persona-- Ooooooh, right, Qunari! This just got better!
@@samurai6331 Not necessarily I don't think. The problem with Solas on the Dalish front is that he remembers what was, and is mad that the Dalish are getting things wrong. What he's forgetting (and what Merrill and her keeper actually go into in DA2, albeit briefly) is that after several genocides and their culture being effectively outlawed by the Chantry, is that some things are permanently forgotten and lost. The Dalish try to restore and preserve what little they can, which is why Merrill wanted to fix the eluvian so badly. Solas would absolutely challenge her worldview, especially with the truth of the vallaslin, but I think Merrill would find a lot of truth to what he says (especially in the spirits/demons thing, she and Anders say much the same as Solas many times). I also feel like Merrill, with how deeply she cares not only about the history she's trying to restore but the culture she's apart of now, would likely not only see through him, but be deeply offended at his insinuation that the Dalish are children playing fantasy.
@@magicrainbowkitties1023 He also tried to tell the Dalish they were wrong but considering how condescending he is and his pride, I could see him just immediately coming in and telling them they were wrong because 'I saw it in the Fade' even though he himself tells you that the Fade differs based on perception and what you expect to see and I honestly can't see him trying to gain the trust of whatever clan he approached rather than coming in as another outsider and trying to tell them how to act, live, and what they got wrong. So yeah, I completely understand why the Dalish rejected him, plus I kind of headcanon that the Dalish saw there was something off about him that rubbed them the wrong way and then he opened his mouth and sealed the deal.
Varric: In that story of yours, the fisherman watching the stars, dying alone.. You thought he gave up, right? Solas: Yes..? Varric: But he went on living! He lost everyone but he still got up every morning, he made a life. Even if it was alone. That's the world; everything you build it tears down, everything you got it takes, and it's gone forever. The only choices you get are to lie down and die or keep going. He kept going. That's as close to beating the world as anyone gets. Varric... That's awesome. He literally is one of the best characters in gaming. For all the knowledge Solas has, Varric is the true legend here. To some, he may seem simple. But honestly, that is one of the reasons why he is such a deep character. He understands life, and thus doesn't require so much complexion. I shall love him forever!
TRESPASSER SPOILERS: Given that the story is more or less about Solas himself (as he lost "his family and tribe" when he destroyed the "elven world" by creating the fade), Varric's comment becomes interesting. Solas, as revealed by the Fade mission, fears dying alone. For him not to try and restore the fade as it once was by tearing the Veil apart as he plans to do in trespasser is to give up and die. But as "intellectual" as Solas is, Varric is the one with the actual wisdom; nothing lasts forever but the certainty of change. But Solas will keep clinging to the past, and it will likely be his undoing.
Cole is the only person with their back to the viewer. All of the other characters show their fronts and at least half of their faces, but Cole is turned almost completely around, with only a small amount of his face visible. But think about it: all of the other characters feel some sort of hurt, have something to hide. Their front is towards the viewer even as their body is tilted towards something unseen in the vicinity with weapons drawn to defend themselves and their friends - with the exception of Dorian, who is faced directly at the viewer but, from his conversations with Cole, probably has a lot of hurt and the least to hide. Cole, however, is completely open with every part of himself at any given time. He also has the ability to know people's minds, but he has only ever shown to use it for the good of others. Thus, he doesn't fear any harm or danger from the viewer or the people behind his back, and he'll receive ample warning of when they will hurt him or anyone around him.
2:45:40 Varric: In the Imperial Court, if someone use the wrong fork at dinner, is that worse than death or just social suicide? Vivienne: It's impossible to say, my dear. Anyone who is ever so mis-stepped would be stabbed to death with the proper fork. One of my favs
Everybody hates Vivienne--and rightly so, sometimes--but she's well-rounded and well-written enough to be hate-able. And her banters with Varric and with Cassandra are both great.
