And the saga continues with getting my car legit in Mexico City but after the frustrations of being sent hither and thither all around town my frustrations were forgotten in the zócalo, metropolitan cathedral and serenaded away but a group of mariachis in plaza garibaldi. An amazing afternoon out in the centro histórico de la Ciudad de Mexico.
Thanks everyone for coming along, I wouldn't have this channel if it wasn't for YOU!

A few suggestions for you and other folks interested in CDMX: there is a Sears store across from the Palacio de Bellas Artes. Look up and you will see a coffee shop terrace (6th floor?) with great views. The Diego Rivera murals in the National Palace (free) tell the story of Mexico and should not be missed. The Cathedral was built, in part, on top of and using stones from the Aztec Templo Mayor (an act of conquest and domination employed in other areas such as Mitla, Merida and Cholula). If you look closely at the church exterior you will see images designed to pull in the indigenous people (such as stone skulls, the famous Aztec eagle myth, feather and snake patterns, etc). Templo Mayor lay buried underground for centuries before being discovered during metro construction in the 1960s. It is an excellent museum where you can reflect on Tenochtitlan (and Teotihuacan) - the massive cities that existed long before the Europeans arrived. Also at the Zocalo is the Gran hotel with the gorgeous stained glass roof over the interior lobby (James Bond Spectre was filmed there). We spent a night in the Gran - it was very nice (and expensive) - but you can simply walk in and check out the lobby (or dine on the terrace upstairs). Finally, Plaza Garabaldi is a weak link - the Tequila museum is worth a look - but all I remember from the plaza is the smell of urine (it must get wild there at night). It might be fun with a group for a night out if you were a drinker, but otherwise there are better things to see. PS - be sure to visit Coyoacan and Casa Azul - another iconic aspect of Mexican culture.

We were in CDMX a couple of months and the Zocalo was closed due to COVID restrictions although access to the cathedral was still open. Nice to see things opening up.

TO CLARIFY: Presidential Palace is home to the President since 2018, when AMLO declared Los Pinos an unnecessary expense. (Now open as a public museum) Begun in 1522, ORIGINALLY The Presidential Palace WAS home to the Mexican President, the first being Hernán Cortés.

The inside of the church is glorious!! I always enjoy the ambient music inside. Normally that presidential palace has hundreds of people protesting directly outside and camping in makeshift communities of tents - I wonder where they went. That Mariachi band though 🎶👌

Nice touch the closeup of the mariachi band. (though must say I have NEVER heard Mariachi in CDMX!) I'm here often as I live in Querétaro, and I was here last FRIDAY. Might have passed you on the street!

What do you record your videos with? I’m nervous of taking my camera to Mexico. I don’t want to attract attention since I’ve never been there.

At the cathedral Agustín de Iturbide was crowned as the first emperor of Mexico, during the first Mexican empire and in fact his body is right there. You should visit the zocalo and Bellas Artes at night.

The Metropolitan Cathedral is made of TEZONTLE. Construction lasted 249 years. It sits stop Montezuma's temple, and uses stones from that temple.

I really enjoyed this video. I had no idea Mexico City was so pretty. All I ever hear is that it's congested and madcap. You missed a word from the Chavela Vargas quote: rechingada: "Los mexicanos nacemos donde nos da la RECHINGADA gana." lol She was born here in Costa Rica, was a lesbian and it seems she was too big for CR's britches. And the guy playing the guitarron and singing El Rey. Really, really nice.

just keeping it polite by not saying rechingada, it gave them a smile though. Glad you enjoyed, I've been surprised by it's beauty too

@@colibritravel5994 I thought that might be the case. Living in Costa Rica, I would have just said "puta gana" never rechingada, You've got me on a jag listening to El Rey videos on RU-vid. Luismi has my heart pumping the most so far.

The presidential palace is Los Pinos (located in Chapultepec park) but AMLO refused to live there. The building in the zocalo is the National Palace.
