This podcast has helped me creatively more than all other podcasts combined. Hearing everyones’ insecurities and all the nuances of the songwriting process has changed my life. I’v never been this more motivated to write songs. Thank you Jim. This podcast is a godsend for people starting out writing music. I have few musician friends because I live in the middle of nowhere, but this podcast makes me feel like I have friends and people who are thinking on the same wavelength

Same for me! And I’ve been writing songs for 25 years now. This Podcast sparked a much needed flame inside of me during the pandemic. Thank you, Jim Adkins and colleagues!

Jimmy Eat World is my favorite band. Switchfoot is a close 2nd. I should come up with a Power Ranking system... They've been numero uno since '03. They've supplanted The Goo Goo Dolls. John Rzeznik is a profound lyricist, but Jim Adkins is even better.

Have you thought about doing live arrangements for songs that don't necessarily seem like they could be performed live? You mentioned going into acoustic for some to get around that issue (555 comes to mind as an example), though it would be cool as an audience member to hear versions of the songs that are specifically geared towards live performances where you're stripped of all the studio effects and extra instrumentation (like the strings you mentioned) and lean heavier into the rock. Kinda like revisiting them and making them exclusive to live performances.

Hey Jim😁😁 love your insights on songwriting, and life in general🤟🏼🤟🏼 Question-it seems like everyone in music uses voice memos to start things out. How do you, personally, organise and sort through that material? I’ll try to do this while I’m out running and my mind is distracted, but I’m always scared that I will neglect some amazing idea and lose it into the void. What are your thoughts?

People in many other countries seem to appreciate live music much more specially bands that aren’t huge, old bands that haven’t had a hit in 35 years and local bands. Just watching shows in different countries like China, Japan, Germany, South America to name a few it looks a lot more people come to shows. You see a band that has trouble selling out a 300 cap club in America even if its a good market they still just don’t draw a lot of people but the same band plays in China or South America or whatever to a massive crowd with thousands of people. A buddy of mine that I was in a band with 12 years ago has lived in China for a good 10 years now he’s in a cover band that plays songs like Metallica, they really aren’t that good, he has posted videos of them playing live to a packed club/bar with a good 100 people but if they were in America there would be 5 people there the people would be the band members girlfriends lol they just aren’t a good band they sound like a band that just started playing together today no offense to them they just aren’t good and it’s amazing how many people comes to see them. There are a few cover bands in my area that are absolutely mind blowing good some of the songs sound better then the actual original bands and they don’t have 100+ people coming out every weekend sure when it’s a holiday or some kind of event they pull hundreds and hundreds of people but not on ur average weekend like my buddies crappy band. Back about 8 years ago my band at the time released an album that we spent 2 years recording, the band broke up before we played the album release and was able to start touring. I put it on all the streaming services, one of which was Jango internet radio and they make it very easy to track who’s listening to it and people can click a button to become a fan and a like button. Well in other countries a lot more people were becoming fans and liking it. When it started playing in India almost every person that listened to a song became a fan, liked the music and they went to our Facebook page to give us a like. I remember waking up one morning going on Facebook to see a few hundred people liked our page over night and they all had Indian names I thought they were fake accounts or something because they were all from India lol. I went on Jango a few days later to check the stats and seen all the people From India and then realized what happened lol. If my band had the ability to play in different countries we probably could have done pretty good. I mean look at David Hasselhoff he couldn’t play a show anywhere but in Germany people like his music so he played shows there.
