I don't recommend too much left hand chording, unless you have either a bass player or your actually playing the organ. The BASS note is the foundation!!! I generally like to keep the melody on top of everything, especially when I'm playing solo; but in the event that you're playing along with vocals, it's your domain to let loose!!! Thanks for the support!!! Concerning more left hand into real life applications; I cover a few techniques and substitutions on the dvd (mid-March 2008).

you should explain how it's the #5th moving to the natural 5th for that first tidbit. you should explain that the voicing in the 2nd bit is the Bill Evans "So What" chord from the Miles Davis album Kind of Blue. that voicing is like the basis of Modern Jazz Piano. same goes for those Left Hand voicings in the 3rd bit. Also from Bill Evans.

Hey-What's up... Well, my take on music is pretty simple. You can play to impress, or you can play to accompany. If your intentions are to impress, I'd recommend studying "jazz" theory; for someone looking to accompany, I'd recommend "classical" theory, with an emphasis in analysis studies. I try to blend both styles in the dvd; it'll be out in mid-March. Thanks for the support!!!

at 1:13..... Gbmaj9/Bb = a major 9 chord with the 3rd in the bass, then take it down a perfect 4th toDbmajor9 with F in the bass. Now walk it up in the sequence of a Mixolydian but stop on G then move this same chord backward by reversing the sequence. Neat trick. Just don't over use it in every song where there is a minor chord. Some call it a root position minor 7th chord with a b13.

I have to get that DVD. I would like to know more theory. I usually have a bass player. I just feel like I'm hitting a glass ceiling in my playing and I KNOW I can be SO much better. I like the way you and AG Praise break everything down and make is simple. Keep pushin' them buttons!!! ;-)

I agree...unless you're REALLY in The Spirit, to run up, down and back up again IS really too busy but it helps to know those things. My biggest issues are gettin' the left hand goin' and gettin' up the speed in my right hand. I'll usually play the root and a 5th in my left hand to fill the bottom a little and fatten the cords. What else do you recommend??? Can you do a video that teaches how to get more "left hand" into the music???

I would be interesting in hearing K.C.'s thoughts on this, but in my experience, knowledge of your scale and the chord structures within them helps solve alot of this problem. My brother consistently plays in 11ths and 13ths, chopping them up all kinds of ways...monster chords all day! that's not my style. I'm more like you...and open chord player with fast bass note action. So yeah...git on it KC! lol...
