This film offers a look at the life and work of master sailmaker Carol Hasse, whose sail loft is located in beautiful, historic Port Townsend, Washington. The film explores the incredible sailmaking process, the life journey of Hasse as an educator, community activist, founder of The Wooden Boat Festival and Foundation and mentor to a crew of young sailmakers. The backdrop is Port Townsend, an historic maritime center and current capitol of wooden boats in the United States.
Your Sails
Port Townsend Sails is committed to building your sails to the highest standards. Our goal is for you to be completely satisfied with your sails and our service.
Our mission is to contribute to the self-reliance and confidence of our customers and to the integrity and tradition of the sailmaking craft by providing hands-on instruction and by building the highest quality cruising sails available anywhere.
Our Guarantee
We will build sails to serve you well in all your cruising adventures. Port Townsend Sails guarantees the following:
Excellent fit and set
Uncompromised structural integrity
Modern design efficiency
Durability
Maintainability
Follow-up to ensure your (and our) satisfaction
Professional design, meticulous construction, and traditional handwork are elemental to our voyaging sails. With a sail from our loft, you will experience the pure joy of traditional craftsmanship and the performance of custom designed shape.
Excellent fit and set are achieved through thorough and conscientious measuring, custom design, and computer plotting/lofting. Structural integrity is achieved through the use of appropriate cloth, quality hardware, and good stress distribution in panel layout and patch construction. Effective sail area and draft is determined through thorough assessment of rig, hull, and voyaging plans. Durability is a primary goal in our sail construction. Extra layers of cloth are used in high load and chafe prone areas. Our traditional handwork is unmatched by any production loft.
Maintainability is integral to our sail construction. Our sails are sewn with extra wide seams to accommodate the inevitable need to re-stitch at some point during the life of a sail. Hand-sewn seizings don t chafe sails or hardware, and hand-sewn rings and hanks can be replaced without damaging the hardware. Follow-up: we provide in-loft and onboard detail and usability checks to ensure customer and professional satisfaction.

When a human's life is made "Art" it is, like all masterpieces, a joy to look at and ponder the great skill it takes to make Art. Moreover, smiles are so hard to come by in this world and here in this documentary you will smile till it aches, the kind of ache one pleasures at after a good exertion who's outcome is joy. Thank you Ms. Haase and The Ladies of the Sail Loft.

Having lived in sequim and the PNW for 18 years, I was always appreciative of the fact that PT stayed the same small town of craftspeople and artisans that it is today. Big business has its hooks in enough places, nice to know towns like this are protected by the very people that helped it evolve to place it is today. What a great story;)

Yup, big business is bad bad bad. That mindset is the reason Washington State is the left wing sewer that it is.

I love your passion, your skill and artistic talent. I’ve sailed a small wooden pram… and the wonder of wind, waves and water, of wood plank, hemp, and bronze, makes such a memory, a youthful regression of time. Thank you for the video.

New Orleans not as pleasant in weather especially in the summer, yet as magical i would say. You are so bless and to be in such a lovely inlet. Seems the north has always been more masculine in that realm, however in the deep South we had dozens of women who were sale markers. My first ventures in New Orleans, I met a gem of a women age 96 and was still consulting for restoration, in that she held all her patterns and her own log book's of the projects she worked on. She learnt from her mother and father and two other family members. There were black and white photos of warehouse floors filled with women preparing sails ⛵️ that was over 53 years ago. Now add 96 to 55 minus 10 for she began helping at ten. 141 and the photos I saw were of her as a child. There is the call of the seas 🌊 that is answered by few, those few are characters of deep love for the world of sailing ⛵️ ❤️

I was stationed for a few years from my native U.K. to Kalamazoo Mi. My wife and I never felt comfortable in most large American cities. There were a couple of exceptions. However we absolutely loved the smaller towns of Northern Michigan. Apart from the winters we could have very easily have chosen Traverse City for our retirement. We never made it to the North West of America but Port Townsend reminds me of those small towns around Lake Michigan.

This project, so richly told + video footage combined into such a tantalizing true tale...Especially, this story's richness around passion for one another's teammates, camaraderie about the towns people, school system, & the summers end classic boat fest just makes my heart & soul hum ! My best wishes to the team & town! Canyon down in Monterey..

Wow! A very nice film that captures the essence of the well grounded solid character and beauty I have come to know and love about Carol Hasse in the 30 plus years I have known her. I enjoyed several thousand miles of offshore cruising with my first set of her sails and look forward to the next set she and her artisan crew will soon craft for our current sailing home. She and her crew are a living landmark of quality people and products in the Northwest and the entire West coast. Cheers, Marty Klein

Great video. New to sailing and purchased a 37 foot sailboat and the sails are Carol Hasse sails. Port Townsend reriged in 2019. I came from aviation as an A&P and my interest was aviation but do an attack by illegals I was of work for years, learning to walk and other issues. Got interested in sailing. Want to get a different spinnaker so will get Carol to make it.

Great story. You don't get what you don't pay for. I was under the impression her view on only hiring women has evolved. I hope so. I don't like prejudging people and you can't fight a stereotype by creating your own. Just sayn. I bet I hope I don't understand her perspective. Great work ethic, generous with knowledge, great sense of family and community. Do much good to get hung up on that point.

@@ianmackinnon9916 i saw her first on a tour of her little folk boat. It was so nice. She was strong yet humble on an incredibly well prepared little sailboat. Searched and found this and was quite let down. Remember. When the title says, “ the first woman to do …” . It means a man with a pair of big hairy balls did it first.

Dont worry. I worked in jobs where they said no woman is going to be working in our station. No woman is going to be driving me around. And this is the piece de resistance, "no woman is more intelligent than a man". I just can't figure out why that guy drove ambulances when he clearly had more than enough intelligence to be a top neurosurgeon. I mean it couldn't be that he was wrong, he was a man after all.
