Passlock sensor Problem 2001 Chevy Suburban/Truck

Passlock sensor issues with 2001 Chevy Suburban. This is not how to bypass the system completely or cutting I don't agree with the cutting and adding resisters but for some it has work but I don't feel comfortable cutting away and bypassing a system designed to keep people that don't respect other hard earned property from stealing my vehicle. Please comment Thank you.

"PROBLEM SOLVED" after days of trouble. SPRAYED CRC "Electronic Spray" ($3 at Walmart) into my "aging ignition." (Electronic spray will not hurt the "dusty old" ignition). Unbelievable! "1998" Chevy Cavalier 2.2L engine. Chevy wanted $300 for a reset. Had it towed several times and local mechanics tried everything. Found this $3 CRC spray solution in a forum. "Security light" kept coming on. Stalled in traffic. Had to wait to start again. Looked at all the "bypass solutions" and Amazon gadgets too. When it works for you remember to share and pay-it-forward.

@ken remove the key lock cylinder and inside the housing take a dry clean cloth and clean the inside of the housing along where the sensor sit which is at the front of the housing. Also clean the lock cylinder itself reinstall and that should fix your problem.

+Ronald Swindell I didn't have this problem starting till I replaced the key cylinder. My original problem was the key wouldn't always want to turn so replaced the cylinder from acdelco with two new keys, been thinking maybe keys needed to be coded of something.

The first time the "Passlock" sensor malfunctioned in my 2001 Suburban, both I and my regular mechanic thought the fuel pump had failed, but he eventually put 2+2 together with the "security" alert, and I ended up bringing it to the dealer for repair, and got reamed for their $500 replacement/re-programming of the whole sensor assembly. That was three years ago, and after the weather got unusually cold in my area over the past few days, I started having the exact same problem again. Based on my prior experience, and my suspicion that the re-occurrence of the problem was weather-related, I knew the sensor itself probably wasn't the problem, and started looking for my OWN answers. Thanks to your video, problem found ... and solved. Repair cost: ZERO. I've started with a small piece of business card stock wedged into the harness socket, and that seems to have done the trick, for now. If it acts up again, I WILL remove the plug and solder the wires directly to the receptacle pins.

I've had no further problems with this issue since doing the "McGyver" fix described in my comment, and that's now been over two years. Taking the steering column cover off isn't that difficult, and once you've got it off, you'll clearly see the suspect connector ... it's right on top of the ignition cylinder assembly. You'll also be able to quickly tell if the plug on the end of these three wires is loose. If the plug wiggles at all in its socket, that's most likely your problem, because the whole "Passlock" system is very sensitive ... any loose-fitting connections will cause problems like this, because the system interprets such loose connections as, e.g., a potential thief tampering with your wiring. When you've opened up the column cover, and figured out how you want to tighten up the connection, just be careful putting the column cover back in place. There are several plastic pins on one half that match up with holes on the other half, and if you try jamming the two halves of the cover back together without ensuring that all the pins are properly positioned to go into their corresponding holes on the other half, you may end up breaking the pins ... then the two halves of your column cover won't stay together as neatly/tightly anymore ...

Emmanuel Avila I have a 01 silverado in tip top condition , have this issue I replaced the ignition and the keys . the light is still on! even more strange is that it runs fine with the light on!! I'm baffled.. if you should find a way to fix the issue please let me know. thank you so much..... mike.

@ Buford: A Passlock malfunction that occurs while the car is driving/in motion (e.g., that's what's giving you the "security" alert) won't shut the car off ... probably designed that way for safety reasons. Once the car is turned off, however, any malfunction involving the coded key/ignition switch portion of the system may prevent you from re-starting, because the Passlock system thwarts "hot wire," uncoded key or other such theft attempts by disabling the fuel pump. The system apparently re-sets itself after a certain amount of time has expired after the event that triggered the alert, and then works normally again. In my situation, the problem didn't lie in either the ignition cylinder or the key ... which I, like you, replaced once at a dealer cost of $500! The problem was caused by the crappy design/fit of the wiring connector that's situated on top of the key cylinder assembly, which is part of the Passlock system ... a design defect that no Chevy dealer will ever admit, even if they know about it. It's just not a good connector for this particular application. ANY movement of the wiring plug in its socket, or oxidation of the contacts, will trigger a "security" alert, and all the other crap that flows from that, e.g., weird flickering of the "security" light while you're driving, disabling of the fuel pump on attempt to re-start, etc. Either wedge something into the socket to tighten up that loose connection (as described in my main post), or cut the plug off and solder the wires to their corresponding leads in the socket, and my guess is, you won't be seeing that "security" light any more ... that's the way it worked for me. Good luck.

ive got an 02 silverado and it will start occasionally but it wont drive for more then a few seconds before it just shuts off. i was told it was the security system and after watching this vid i finally found it. thank you. i think the only other problem is i might have a bad battery because it just seems like all electricity is cut to the vehicle when it shuts off

when it comes to problems like this check the battery first, check connections, and the life remaining on the battery, by pursching a battery tester, even though your vehicle starts ok the battery does not have the power to fully run all parts of the vehicle. example, my AC on my 2001 tahoe stop blowing cold air, took it to AC repair shop, they checked everything and concluded that I have an electrical problem which he knows nothing about, so I went home check my battery for life remaing, which was 34% and stated to replace battery, pursched a new battery started the vehicle, ran rough at first as ECM learning system then after minute or two cold air blowing, as they say 90% of electrial problems is battery issues......

I had that problem with 1998 Z71. My truck did start off and on... I started the truck and disconnected my passlock while truck was running and bypassed it. I left it unplugged and turned my truck off... Now it turns on and off with no problem. That was two years ago and I have never had a problem with it not starting...

1) Pull the 3 wire connector tab out. 2) remember the wire colorcode lineup. 3) on the tab -you can push the wire release in... and pull the whole wire the fuck out. 4) make the connection piece tighter by crimping it. 5) place wires back in tab... and tab back into that bastard setup. 6) start engine *(Additional info) ecm reset can be accomplished fast by pulling all the ecm fuses.... then start (computer will relearn so don't worry). ANY bad codes will reappear anyways for scan testing. ** If you have continued problems because of security lockdown... the whole assembly needs replaced.

I have had this issue for a couple years and always would crack it and wait the 10 to 15 minutes until the passlock reset and it was happening multiple times a week. I cleaned the connections on the wire harness and wedged the harness tight and have not had any issues in the past month.

Here's a trick you can utilize if you get stuck while out and about... Turn the key to the on position but DO NOT start the truck, keep it like that until the security light goes off (usually about 10 minutes) turn the key to the off position, count to 3, then repeat the first step (remember, DO NOT START) which will take another 10 minutes, when the security light goes off the second time turn the key to the off position, only this time you will keep the key in the off position for about 2 minutes, then your truck should start and stay running... Try not to get to excited and prematurely try turning it over because you will have to start all over and you don't want to do that because it will drain your battery... With this trick you can get your truck home and then fix it according to this video!

Makes no sense at all what you just said. "Then you go home to fix it? I tough that was the fix. Yeah right! The point here is, the battery dies when light stays on for too long. It won't shut down. Again, never GMC cars ever again, you learn and you live.

@markwietstock1537
@markwietstock1537 7 лет назад
"Paul" probably figured this out a long time ago, but for anyone else who may be looking at this thread later, vehicles equipped with the Chevy "Passlock" system require use of an ignition key that has a chip embedded in the head (e.g., the "plastic head" that Paul noted he didn't have). This chip "talks" to a module mounted on the ignition cylinder. If you try to start the vehicle with an ordinary metal key that doesn't have this chip embedded in it, the Passlock anti-theft system will detect an "unauthorized" key, and disable the fuel pump, causing the car to stall. Sucks, I know, but there it is ... if the OEM "smart" key is lost or damaged, you have no alternative but to bend over and pay to have another "smart" key made for you at an authorized Chevy dealer or repair shop. I noted one comment that indicated that Auto Zone can make a proper "smart" key, for far less $$ than the dealers charge. I've never had to try that myself (I've still got the original OEM key and one dealer-made replacement), but if it's true, there's your best solution for a lost or damaged OEM key ...

Do not try to open your steering wheel covers and missed with them, it will only give you many problems, Just look for a more specific video to fix the problem in your cars. This should've been a GM recall 100%. but Dealers don't want to do or know nothing about your problem, even though they know every body with this cars have exacly the same issue. Trust me, you thank me later. I have a 2002 Yukon, I did this and more issues came out now, more problems. As I said earlier, this video has nothing to do with the issue on hand. What he's talking about here, is just opening a can of warms. Is hard to know what their motives are. Just Beware with this guys.
