These two weren't very good celeb players. Van didn't even seem interested in being there.

Van Johnson acted as though he had never seen the game played. He also seemed ultra serious and a bit miserable.

This is the prettiest l ever saw Susan Strasberg look.

Gail was smart enough and Van was decent enough in giving clues but when it came to receiving Van was not that good. Susan was worse when receiving though she did pretty good in the lightning round. (as I call it!) I think the thickest of them all was the guy contestant. Let's be honest, the only real standout was Gail. I enjoyed the episode anyway and I enjoy this channel. I like Van in his movies, but on this show he is a basket case!

They're so terrible! So embarrassing!

Why did they always pick educated, well to do competitors , who certainly did not need the money . Why not give ordinary folk a chance , who could benefit from some extra cash .

I thought Susan Strasberg was a real knockout. Even though her clues were not the greatest, her delivery of them was delightful

It's not the worst episode but I was surprised that Van seemed to be either bored or dumb and to think he was a major star.

Van seemed bored and completely aloof, which made this episode awkward and hard to get thru.

As a teenager, my husband waited on Van Johnson, but couldn't remember his name. As he was leaving, he turned and mouthed, Van Johnson. He was very kind and his trademark was he aways wore red socks.

It's wild to think how now (especially for those who follow science fiction) the word "Cryogenics" is I think relatively fairly well known nowadays (of course relating to the science used for potentially holding human beings in suspended animation/stasis - generally for future dates when an incurable illness they may have becomes curable, etc.).

Some of these words were tough

For "Bootlegger" I would've right away jumped in immediately with the clue... "Moonshiner..." In retrospect, I'm wondering if they even had the word "moonshine" back then (??) I suppose they did! However, It was such an obvious clue (and even Ludden didn't mention it!) … Kind of surprising (again unless the word "moonshine" came later, after the fact).

Nowadays people would say “cocaine” for”crack”'! 😅

Interesting to hear Van Johnson in 1962 speak of performing in The Music Man. I saw him in that show in the mid 1980s, in Fort Worth at Casa Manama.

For "grouchy" the best one word clue probably was "grumpy." After that "Harpo" or "Marx."

"Crotchety" actually would've been a good clue for "Grouchy" as well as I think maybe "Cantankerous"

Thank heavens for Gail! No wonder Van wanted her to stay on his side, she was the only decent player. And both Susan and Van are listless, like shop dummies or something, it's the first episode I've seen which I found boring, but I'm a completist and have to watch everything! Re grumpy, what about bumpy, lumpy etc or Dwarf? Pity it wasn't today because Grumpy Cat!

Van Johnson, wasn't very good at Password. He needed to study. Some of them are good and some of them stink. They should practice before going on the air

So many times the contestants don't put the clues together. Also shows how much some celebrities rely on scripts.

I would have said "hoops," "indoors," and "tall" for "basketball." For "bingo" I would have said "square," "game," and "5."

Does that contestant EVER look like Arlene Francis (I wonder if that's why Van Johnson said her name) (and on Grouchy, I don't know WHY they didn't say dwarf after Grumpy)!

why do they always ask these women players what their husbands do,,,, is nt being a mother or housewife a nice job?

Susan is lovely but at 23 your vocabulary is not quite developed.

Salesman was the perfect clue, that shoulda solved the puzzle. For me, as a last resort I woulda used the word putty to solve silly 😮.

Maybe for "Charity) One can try saying, "magnanimity?" Or just "magnanimous"

I was going nuts for someone to say "distiller" for bootlegger.

Curious that Heflin could not guess "bootlegger's. He was the original choice to play Eliot Ness on " The Untouchables'". Robert Stack was a last minute replacement.

If they knew what it meant then, I'm sure Van Johnson would have had a meltdown.

A couple ideas for "Grouchy" - one would be if they could see into the future a couple years (in a very grouchy way) say the word, "Oscar!" (And then moving your neck around a little like Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street :-) As the clues were building up (and this would have worked possibly because this reference would still be in the past for them) saying, "Harpo……" In that lilting up way that they do on Password to indicate that you are talking about something related. Either the contestant would have said "Grouchy" (probably while laughing) but even if they said "Groucho," Ludden would've said something like "Okay, that's a form of the word, you have one chance to..." and probably before he finished speaking the contestant would hopefully say "GROUCHY! :-)

did they have extra-strength NyQuil in '62? cuz if they did, Van must've been guzzling it. Talk about soporific.
