I got seriously scolded at art class for using my fingers to blend. I was told the oil from your fingers will show up twenty years from now on the picture. So far my mothers pastel paintings from 30 yrs ago don't show anything and she used her fingers to blend it all.

Thank you. I think its funny how i bought every blensing tool and have some diy ones too but i probably wont need them! They arent practical. They get dirty plus they remove pastel as much as speread. They are good for removing some ( i dont mean erasing) may be ill try a highly polished leather thing to save fingers in background work.
I use two types of paper - pastelmat and art -spectrum primarily because they are not afraid of water. Dry pastel is a material that works well with water and a hard brush. But I only blur backgrounds and only on these types of papers. Otherwise, I work on optical color mixing.
@@verakalinovska2807 i got a good deal on pastelbord ampersand. Like pastelmat on board. It will like water too. I assume opticl mixing is like little dots of various colors to achieve new color? I like the water idea fine
@@cynthiamarston2208 Optical color mixing in my practice is when a brushstroke or stroke with one pastel color, softer, overlapped with another pastel color, harder. But not rubbed by hand. There is an effect in which the first layer (color) remains, but it is mixed (quite a bit) with a color from top layer. It turns out a new hue. The effect does not look like manual rubbing, both colors are visible, but the new resulting color visually arrives. Try it, you will like it.
