Paswel Marenya, Socioeconomist at CIMMYT gives a great summary of new research in Tanzania that is part of a larger AMA Innovation Lab -funded project on bundling Drought Tolerant Maize with Index Insurance.
One of the main motivations for this project underway concurrently in Tanzania and Mozambique is to figure out a way to mitigate the broadest range of farmer risk. By bundling the DT maize with index insurance, a wider spectrum of risk is covered, (mild drought-induced harvest fluctuations are covered by DT Maize, AND catastrophic drought-induced harvest failure is covered by the index insurance) allowing farmers not only to smooth consumption, but also be confident enough to make further input/seed investments and possibly even move themselves up from subsistence to sustainable agricultural growth.
