I feel like you missed the point of this song. It's great being 6 feet tall and weighing in at nearly 20 stone but i wasn't always so big and strong, and *I* remember what it was like to be small and helpless in a world determined to hurt me. Pat Benatar was at the height of her power when this video was made, and it's clear she never forgot either. This song makes me cry every single time i hear it, i've been very deeply close with more than a couple of CSA survivors.
@suzumebacigr my point exactly. It's just yet another post whining about how they don't like recent musical technology. I'm not a fan of it either but I like the nonstop bitching about it even less
@@mrmo4176 dude its not like you either talk about the meaning or you cant talk about anything else. he chose to speak technically wise. you chose to go with another quality of the song. those two subjects are not compatible in comparison.
@@WastedTalent- Tell me how easy it was/is to generalize, demonize and criminalize Boys who were/are the hidden/ignored victims of child abuse, torture and such.
She wrote this after reading an article on child abuse in the New York Times. She was shocked by a lot of what she read. This song is a reaction to that article.
This is one of the most misunderstood songs. Some people still think she hates children. She wrote this song to expose the fact that children r suffering throughout the world. This song was meant to bring awareness and help to children
good times gaming Most idiots who misunderstood the song stopped at the title. All it takes is 5 seconds from reading the lyrics that you knew it was all about child abuse. Great song and it's one of Pat's favorite songs. She is coming to Kentucky in the next 2 months and it's a bit of a drive but it's the closest she will be to where I live, so I might go for it. Fewer years ahead of us.
good times gaming I first heard this song as a child when I was 9 or so. I stayed up late one weekend, while skipping through the TV channels I ran across her band on...it may have been Fridays, or Saturday Night Live. That's the best I can recall, that was a LONG time ago. Anyway, as an abused child myself I instantly became infatuated with her music. I begged my dad to get the record for me, the next weekend he did. Then when he heard me blasting that song, he promptly shattered it. No matter, it changed my life.
good times gaming I remember when Pat caught shit for this song because the xtians were all up in a tizzy about satan worship and deemed every song that mentioned Hell, Devil, or Satan in the title as devil music. And all of this was without acdtually listenhing to the lyrics and the context. Kinda reminds me of republicans claiming songs for their campaigns that go against everything they stand for (Born In The USA and Reagan). When all the while, the song was inspired by a headline on a newspaper word for word. No matter how many times I have heard this song over the years, it still gives me chills.
@@TheDuckseason Because shes become a woke sheep like the rest of em. She wont sing hit me with your best shot either but I bet she wont return any of that money she made from those songs right? Shes a woke idiot now and I lost all respect for her.
I miss my cassette of this album. I played this at high volume. As a black woman my choice of music was misunderstood. But my Mother was and still is phenomenal for teaching me and having me love all genres of music. I am forever grateful. And Pat Benatar became independently of my teachings one of my all time favorite rock singers and musicians. This song you could imagine I got really wierd stares but I love it tell this day.
As a WHITE man married to a black woman that should not play into your choice of music..that`s like me saying as a "White" man listening to snoop my music...blahhh blahhhh blahhh.. Music Gaps race!..Stop with the crap!
Targeted One Person Your race doesn't matter. Good music is good music. I'm glad you had a parent who let you explore music and find what you like. Happy listening.
It is absolutely clear what this song is about. Anybody who could ever think that this song is anti-child could not have heard any words except "children" and "hell". Great performance.
This song made it possible for myself to get through the beating's I received from my father who was a police officer, and only by the grace of God I didn't blow his head off with his own revolver.
She might have started in the 70's, but she made it main stream in the 80's. If I'm wrong, then I have false memory which means it's time for frequent naps.
so many came up out of the late 70's punk scene that made the 80's the 80's, the Cars ,the Police, the Ramones, just to start don't forget Van Halen started in the 70's also
So did a lot of the metal hair bands. Scorpions, Iron Maiden. The 80's and the talent that prospered and grew in the 80's owe almost their entire musical identity to MTV. Without MTV, a lot of these bands would not have been as prosperous.
I was there! One of the most epic concerts ever. Rockin it with Pat, Neil and the The Band, HBO, and thousands of us from the Tri State Area. Easily one of the most brilliant performances in rock history!
I remember all the abuse they took over this song. Child abuse was not deemed appropriate for rock and roll. If not, what the hell is rock and roll for if not to point out things in our society that we don't feel comfortable talking about. As one who grew up in the 60's, I know what music can mean. This was a great performance of music, but an even greater message.
I saw Pat at SPAC very early 80's on what I believe was her first national tour...those who know...know. One of the best shows I ever saw! This song helped me to begin the long journey of recovery and to decades later testify at a NYS Senate hearing in the mid Aughties as a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, much to the chagrin of many family members. To Pat you will never know the strength you gave me all the times I played this album, head phones on and singing at the top of my lungs along with you...forever grateful...thank you!
my ex girlfriend was a victim was a victim of physical, emotional, psychological abuse, including sexual abuse.Thank you Pat for bringing this out in the light,YOU did make a difference !
This is a powerful song that is compelling and commands humility and respect. Pat was the bomb in her heyday and took the throne as Queen of Rock in her own right.
I saw her on this tour. She was incredible! Her music was way more rock, and harder than the music that she was famous for at the time. It was one of the hardest rock concerts I've been to, and I've seen the Doors, Zeppelin, Dio, Priest and she was up there with them. This chic could rock.
This song helped me know I was NOT the only one. My parents both molested, beat, emotionally and psychologically broke me yet I fought hard to be who I am today. I am truly sorry for what you also went through as well as all that have. 💕💜💕✌🏻😋🌹🙏🏻
This song still makes me cry as a man, because I cried listening to the same song as a boy, except the pain then was different then today, I now know the difference between physical and mental pain. All the abuse from so many adults, I don't know why I'm alive. I went so far as to hang myself as a young man because the pain of my childhood was still deep in my soul. Physical, mental, sexual, religious, and that's just the start of my young life.
I've been to a LOT of concerts. My single greatest concert experience is seeing this song performed live... It was pouring rain, my wife and I were right up against the fence, I look over and there is this incredible blonde standing on the bottom rail of the fence, completely soaked, fists all clenched, singing and crying her eyes out. I don't know her story, but 20 years later that one concert moment tops all of them. Must have been something. Marvin Grombacher is probably the most under-rated drummer ever and Neal Geraldo is one of the most under-rated guitarists..
I just saw her live 3 days ago. I never knew the history of this song and she explained it. I cried too. I'm a survivor of abuse as an adult . and I can't explain... it was like an intense cathartic experience. It really affected me. I have so much respect for her and Neil, I always knew her music from the 80's but wasn't a huge fan, and thought of her as a "pop rocker" who looked good. Boy, was I wrong. I have so much respect and and am in awe of the talent that her and Neil possess. And, btw, she looked fabulous and her voice was as strong as ever.
Kevin Ryan, more than likely, the blonde u were referring to was acting out her emotions through the lyrics from which she suffered as a child. Its difficult to know one's cry for help on the inside, despite how we may look on the outside
I'm so glad this lady finally got her Induction into The Rock "N" Roll Hall of Fame.... She is so deserving of this honour. Who remembers Fast Times at Ridgemont High?
Myron Grombacher.... a wild man and great drummer.... I'm a guitar player and took notice of him since the 80s enough to learn his name....he deserves that and more recognition....
I saw pat 3 yrs ago,,,and they STILL play this song every concert! And MAN,did she kill it! She hit every note with power and control that only comes from having a god given incredible voice that she has at her age! SHE IS STILL THE REIGNING QUEEN OF ROCK!!!!
This song came out when I was 9 and being severely abused. It made me realize other kids get abused too I thought it was just me because there was something wrong with me. Thank you Ms.Benetar.
This song is used to great effect at the end of an episode of Mindhunter season 2. I didn't know it before, but had to pause and look it up right away. Some songs are just a punch in the gut.
Same here, I knew it was Pat Benatar but didn't really know the song...one good thing about all this technology is being able to instantly research this shit...
I was there way back in 82..one hell of a concert..how many were there with me..?...loved her then and still loving her now in 2019....hope that time machine gets here soon.
I saw them that year in Cincinnati, OH. I was blown away that such a diminutive woman could just put her head back and sing with such power, force and passion! Ive always love her drummer, Myron Grombacher, as well. He was incredible and exciting to watch and listen to.
True. Madonna broke out and became big about 6 months before the Live Aid concert in 1985, so she was really only a top selling artist for the second half of the decade, whereas Pat was already successful before the decade started.
@@garym6338 Pat was a true talent and kicked ass !! Madonna had talent, but she tried to shock people to get attention!! I met Pat in 2017 and she still kicks ass!!
After poverty, two abusive older brothers, a dead father I never met, an abusive, selfish, negligent and closet-racist mother who repaid my taking care of *her* for 20 years with abandonment, and after bad pseudo-friends, and after bad home, neighborhood, school, teacher and work situations (even then), I know what growing up in *several* different forms of hell looks and feels like.
My mother was a foster mother for 30 years. I’ve seen it all. You’d be surprised how far a ball, glove and a bat would go with these kids. Something we take for granted. Just someone to play with them. That’s just a start.
This song came out when I was about 9 years old and being severely abused. I realized there must be others going through the same thing since there's a song about it, I didn't feel so alone. Thank you Ms. Benetar for the music and the understanding.
She crushed this tune! All natural vocals and no auto tune doing the work for her! No samples. That band is playing every single note! This is such a dark tune about child abuse. She delivered that message so powerfully!
This is what makes today's music in my opinion seem so limited because the bar in the 80s was already raised so immensely high with performers Like Pat Benatar. I grew up as a teenager in the 80s and I have witnessed music for many generations and in this person's opinion there's no comparison. They didn't need stage gimmicks fancy dancing sexy revealing outfits to sell their shows. This the shows sold out because of one reason pure musical Talent.
I met her a couple of years ago and she is still so damn beautiful !! Her voice is still amazing!! She was very cool and nice during the meet and greet!!
Miss Pat Benetar, This song got me through a lot of hard times. Thank you for singing about what so many of us have gone through. You rock. Sincerely; Stephan
Giraldo was highly rated in the early to mid 80's. I played guitar in a band in '82. I walked into a guitar store that year, and one of the employees was showing people a lick that Neil had recorded. All guitarists knew who he was.
Or when I "hear" it... Pat had one of the most RAW sounding female rock voices evahh!!! And her hair was PERFECT during the 1980's. She was the epitome of SEXY ROCK MAMA!!!
Yeah pat benatar didn't hate children, she has children and loves them, this song was about hell on earth for abused children and the horror they endure like someone else commented, when this song came out all kinds of skeptics and pessimist were looking for anything to discredit Pat's meaning but we all clearly know exactly what she's writing about. Earth is our own hell.
this was my life I stopped the chain with my own children but the pain is still fresh and real songs that reach are soul are what help us heal unfortunately my kids know nothing of my past and no longer talk to me but I hope some day they return but the most important is I broke the chain
We played this song in our 80s cover band (we had a good chick singer) and i remember listening to these lyrics at the time were pretty bold and certainly different from most of the 80s fluff on top 40 back then. What a time to have lived through, we all thought our generation of music was so new and fresh and hipper ! It did get rather eclectic then with the punk sceen still alive, then "NewWave" hit, and then came the "Hair Bands" even Heavy Metal took off to another level. Eighties MTV was revolutionary and really changed music. Not necessarily for the better imo.You had to look the part and every song needed a "video" . We thought that would never die!! Looking back, we had fun and felt relevant , even in a cover band lol!!
They really got it right with this song. I know, as I was severely abused by a doctor on Long Island when I was a kid. I am so glad they never stopped performing it, despite the criticism. It is probably one of the greatest songs ever written. Quietly, but definitely so.
Goosebump time at 4:00 with the power in her vocals! Truly unmatched - it's beyond awesome watching Pat belt it outta the park. And she makes it look almost effortless. Truly in a league all her own - just legendary.
The sound is not the greatest, but I love this video. Just watching the look on Pat's face when she turns to her band, and implores them to kick it into high gear, because she wants the audience to feel the impact of the song and the lyrics. Classic. Pat was truly one of the best.
Pat is the best! Kids, elderly and animals never deserve to be abused. I watched Montel Williams years ago about a dirt bag kicking his dog and a audience member said how about I kick you!
and children i hear about parent torture thier children and even kill them! abuse is a horrible thing no matter who suffers😢😢 i cry so hard for the helpless and vulnerable
I saw Pat on September 11th during her "Summer Vacation Tour". Her voice was as good as it was in the 80s. It was an incredibly tough day, but in the end I'm glad that she went on with the show. Thanks Pat!
