Crazy because I just heard of him last night and it’s like the player and teacher I’ve been needing all these years. I never really listened to jazz until recently . Now I’m obsessed . His spirit musta sent me in the right direction . 💪🧞‍♂️

There was a period of time where Pat Martino was the best guitarist in the world. I was so lucky to see him and Joey Defrancesco at the Toronto Jazz Fest. RIP to both of them.

Martino is always eloquent is his harmonic expression, but his melodic analysis remains decades over my head theoretically. A jazz scientist.

I’ve been playing guitar around a decade, mostly rock and blues, recently I’ve delved deeply into the world of jazz and have become hooked on the genius of Coltrane, Joe Pass et all. Pat is my most recent discovery and I can’t believe It has taken this long to dig his style. His melodic ability, willingness to share his knowledge and above all limitless passion for music has inspired me greatly.

He went through a lot and only got better. I am glad that he lived a long life and brought so many good things to music. Even at a very old age, he remained a musician with a fresh outlook and a willingness to move on.

4:20 "This idea continuously came up (some seconds of the most beautiful tonal meandering) ... and the playing of it produced pleasure" That about sums it up :) So glad I decided to look up random jazz guitarists today.

A few years back when Guitar Player magazine had fine print quotes from great guitarists at the bottom of some pages Pat Martino was quoted as saying "there is a global war going on between mediocrity and dedication" (I think that's a correct quote). I've never forgotten that and consequently I feel like I never practice enough. Now, I'm sure of it!

Pat Martino’s “SYMMETRICAL PARENTAL FORMS”: Both the Augmented triad (1-3-#5) and the Diminished 7th chord (1-b3-b5-bb7) are “symmetrical”; the Augmented triad is all major 3rds, and the Diminished 7th chord is all minor 3rds. Each of those “parental forms” are super-easy to find on the guitar, and they can be used to easily generate other chords. - By LOWERING any one note of any Augmented triad, you will create 3 Major triads; by RAISING any one note, you will create 3 minor triads. So that one Augmented triad can be used to find 6 other triads, 3 major triads and their 3 relative minor triads. - Now the Diminished 7th chord… by LOWERING any one note, you will create 4 different Dominant 7th chords, and by RAISING any one note, you will create 4 different Half-Diminished 7th chords. So that one Diminished 7th chord can “parent” 8 other 7th chords. - This is Pat’s “symmetrical parental forms”. Every guitarist should understand this aspect of the guitar that Pat observed and explained to us. May he rest in eternal peace!

I remember distinctly a lesson with Pat about 40+ years ago where I showed him a short motif that I'd written down and asked him " What can I do with this?" and he replied, "Well, let's see now" and proceeded for the next 15 minutes to improvise a new composition while I just listened there spellbound.
