Just a super bad punt in a really critical moment. People often ignore special teams beyond FG kicks, but of course Pat ain't letting this play go. It was as critical of a play as the fumble returned for the TD. He shanked it short, kicked it the wrong direction, and put the entire punt coverage in a compromising position IF Toney could make a one cut break tackle. Which to his credit, he absolutely did. As soon as he made that cut and broke the tackle, I knew he was gone. He didn't quite house it, but close enough that a team as good as KC was absolutely going to cash that in. You feel for the punt coverage as, this was more so entirely on the horrendous punt. It put them in a bad position where if they didn't start flowing towards where he kicked it, he could house it the opposite way. And, that sort of punt may have cost that guy the job next season. Game of inches, and he was probably one inch off on where he wanted to strike that ball. The nerves definitely got to the punter - he rushed the kick when he didn't need to. Was one hell of a super bowl though. But credit obviously to Payton. Not that anyone ever thought a HC as successful as he is doesn't know football, but literally nobody was talking about the difference in these two teams special team wise, but him. He saw it on tape. Hey, when a big play is made by KC on special teams, make sure you let em know I called it. Legend.

At 3:30 the punter is aligned a ~yard to his left of the snapper, and the snap follows that path. So upon catching the snap, the punter's body position is slanted towards the right side of the field. Is this a typical punter/snapper alignment, or could it have contributed to the path of the ball to the right? And fantastic breakdown Pat!

The punter probably slipped just like everyone else did.

If you watch it in slow motion, he didn't slip. It was just a bad punt. He rushed the kick, not recognizing the lack of a punt block being on. He was so afraid of getting blocked, he wanted to make sure he got the kick off. He had an extra second or two to really wind that kick exactly where he wanted, but he didn't recognize it and rushed it. Nerves can get to everyone. And then after it left his foot he looks down at the ground for a moment - recognizing "I f'd up". He knew it as soon as he struck it. Might have cost himself the job next season too. Have to feel at times when one moment, on the biggest stage, might define your entire career.
