If NFL players are willing to sign a waiver that they can never sue the NFL or any of it's teams/owners/coaches in the future because of end of career injuries, then they can go back to the old rules. The NFL does not want to put itself in another predicament involving injuries that some players might claim were avoidable with these rules.

Kickoffs are so pointless with all these changes. While there have been reasonable alterations made to try and prolong personnel health, the beauty in football is the cohesive high-risk/high-reward nature of it. All NFL teams (coaches and players) should all agree to return every kick this year. No fair catches on punts unless it’s already at the 25 or more.

I completely understand touchbacks to the 25 or fair catch in end zone which is touchback but out of end whete the faircatch is is where the ball should be spotted

Cant wait for the NFL in 2050 where the opening kickoff is just a kicker solo on the field kicking a ball off a tee on their own 20 yard line to NOBODY and the opponent either chooses to take the ball where it landed or start at the 25. I'm sure by then the game will be also altered to be 5 on 5 with no blitzing and the QBs must be wrapped in bubble tape for every offensive snap.

With the NFL making all the rules offense friendly, you’ll score more points and therefore, more kickoffs. I’d love to know if that 15% increase in concussions is total numbers or adjusted per kickoff so you could compare year to year.

The fact that they're already aware these lawsuits are coming and planning for THAT rather than ELIMINATE THE REASON FOR THE LAWSUITS altogether and give a crap about the players' actual safety baffles me

such bad business. No integrity and no intelligence in this decision. No respect

i could see a compromise where if the fair catch is inside the 5 yard line then it can count as a touchback. that way if you want to try pinning them there is still a buffer zone

Given the relationship between the NFL and ESPN, I fear this kind of bold commentary is soon to be neutered, if not outright censored.

"Safety" is ruining the game. Football peaked in the early 2000's. I miss collisions. When I was a kid, we would look up "hardest hits compilations" and we would watch them for hours. What people consider a hard hit today used to be average.

Kickoffs are boring to watch. Oh look, another touchback. Just give the ball to the other team at the 20 and be done with it.

Meanwhile up here in Canada we have the no yards rule for kickoffs and punts.

I think the thought was “what’s the cheapest way to look like we aren’t negligent toward player safety?” That’s all it was. TNF and last minute flexes are way more dangerous but the money they bring in make them too much of a golden goose that they won’t get rid of it if they can help it.

They're looking at the wrong aspect of the kickoff. Why not leave as it is and just change the tackle height allowed on kick offs? On kick off plays, all contact on the returner must be ribs or below, and any helmet to helmet is a targeting penalty. *If the returner ducks to avoid a tackle and artificially lowers the tackle target, neither of the above penalties called.

So make it even easier for offenses to move down the field giving them a starting position at the 25 wtf? With a fair catch you should be starting at the 10 or 15. Why is the NFL watering down the game to make it easy for offense? Pat is right it’s a joke!

Im a casual fan from the UK who only watches the Superbowl live & I find it crazy that a game based on spectacle & highlights you have such underwhelming kick off rules, like the kickoff in any game is an iconic & hype moment & you can just kick the ball fairly easily for a touchback & now they want to introduce fair catches...
@byswartz

Not too surprising since the NFL has been cutting punts and kickoffs inside the 10 from their highlights.

I'm sure the owners would happily eliminate kickoffs, have every play involve a qb, and pay the qb rhe special teams money.

May not be a popular opinion but I used to play on kickoffs and I had my bell rung quite a few times. Running full speed down the field into a wedge was a car wreck. I don't mind the xfl idea tbh. Side note switch to grass fields jesus

So basically, all that has to happen is the coaches tell the players to not fair catch the ball, right?
