Nicely done and very well explained! I discovered BSL when the album was five years old and I was 17. I could sing album in my sleep at the time. Haven’t heard it in years but recently circled back and came across your video. I think the sound of the pentatonic scales he uses helped contribute to his whole “open” sound in those years. Never fully transcribed this solo but looking at yours, that complete flat out G pentatonic scale over the Bb#11 that ends on the low F# just made me laugh out loud. That pentatonic position we all learn when we first pick up a guitar. His concept and ability is miles above anything I can imagine. Thanks for your work!
Hi Gregg! What an incredible video!!! Super useful tips for soloing over „ bright size life“! You are suggesting the D mixo scale for the D chord in the A section ... which makes total sense, but I am just wondering that would reinforce a G major tonality in the A part, right? ( the tune being in D Right?)... just thinking out loud
Hey Tina! Thanks! I think you're right about that. It would momentarily reinforce the G Major tonality. If you look at the solo from 2000, you can see that, in that D to D/C area, he uses a lot more of that D Mixolydian or D Blues sound as well as mixing the flat third and major third(f and f#). So, overall, I tried to present some of the scales and sounds that I found him using in the solos.
Thanks for this Dude, I've been looking for a way into learning to play over changes and the presentation of this has been perfect. Great playing and all! Cheers from the UK
Great lesson, especially with two solos recorded 20 years apart. A buddy once suggested that this whole tune, like others of Pat's early ones, toggles between the tonic M to m, in this case DM to Dm. Sort of a simplification of its harmonic structure and because it's jazz, a few blues licks always work.. The fellow below asked in Spanish if the solo transcriptions were available as PDF. I followed the links and could not find them. Are they?
Hi Frank, I don't have the transcriptions as PDFs but you should be able to view the full transcriptions towards the end of the video. Thanks for watching!!

Hi Gregg regards from Beach High..I think I was a year ahead of you...great sounds thanks so much for the amazing playing and theory commentary. Rick Beato is a big fan of this record, consider reaching out to him. Be well.
Thanks Marcelo. I used UAD LA-2A for compression. Some Logic Pro X tape delay as well. I also sent the guitar to two channels (panned left and right) with 14ms of sample delay on the left into a pitch shifter(detuned -8 cents) and 25ms of sample delay on the right into a pitch shifter(tuned up by 8 cents).
@@greggfineguitar Thank you for this comment! EDIT: Love the video btw. Excellent work & thanks for the help with this tune. Hopefully more lessons to come!
