This is what I'd call Baptism by Jazz! What a thrill! I've been following Pat since 1978-79 when "American Garage" came out, and I've not been disappointed in the least! I've been trying to meet him, because he's just such an inspiration to me. I love his interviews, and I've learned so much about myself through his music, especially after I had a ministroke in 2002. "The First Circle" is my favorite song, and "Letter From Home" is my favorite PMG album. My favorite experience was when I attended the First Circle show he gave in October of 1983 I think. I'd completed two years of Advanced Music Theory, so I wanted to try to get the rhythm right down to the beat. I finally guessed 18, 8. Now, being totally blind, I asked my twin sister to write that down on a napkin, and I had her help me sign it with out tearing it, because we only had a ball point pen. I then passed it down through the audience to Pat. After he ended the set, Maggie, (that is her name), told me to hold on to my seat, because he was looking for me in the back of the audience. (It was a small club called Cafe 290 in Sandy Springs, ga. He called me out and asked me to stand up, so I did hoping not to be too far off, because I wasn't sure how close I came, but I thought I was a few beats off. He told me to give myself a pat on the back, because I'd come the closest to getting it right. When he told me it was 22, 8, I was extatic, and he encouraged me to keep striving for that dream! Of course, I was on cloud nine for the rest of that week! I really needed that, too, because I was recovering from a broken elbow and trying to pursue a music career. How exciting that you got to play with him and the others here! I'm really impressed with your drumming skills, and even though this was in 1980, I can really say you love what you do. I really hope you got to perform with Pat on more occasions, because he just seems like such a nice guy to be around. Like me, he's happy to play for long periods of time, and I love singing. Thank you very much for your long testimony. Your experience and this anecdote with Pat Metheny is interesting. Our channel is dedicated to Paul Motian, drummer who died in 2011. Therefore, it is not this great drummer who answers you but a simple amateur living in Brazil and France. You seem to be full of will and determination despite your blindness and health problems. Good recovery and we will continue to satisfy your ears on this channel.
