Pat's vs. Geno's! Which Tourist Trap Philly Cheesesteak is Better?

Pat's King of Steaks and Geno's Steaks are the two most famous restaurants in Philadelphia bar none. Pat's vs. Geno's is a debate that has raged for decades now and everyone has an opinion on which they prefer. There's one thing to keep in mind though: By everyone I don't mean most Philly locals. Pat's and Geno's are mostly tourist attractions and local Philadelphians don't really eat there, unless they are entertaining out-of-towners. They are far from the best cheesesteak in Philly even if they both have the claim to being the first cheesesteak in Philly.
Still, Pat's and Geno's are such an iconic Philly rivalry, and such a well-known rivalry from foodies in general, I do think it is worth checking them out at least once in your life. Tourist destinations are tourist attractions for a reason: Because they're fun! I think it's still fun to check these two spots out, even if you know they won't be the best Philly cheesesteaks you'll ever have. Besides the historical significance of the two restaurants, Sometimes, what's most important is that you have a good time!
Is Pat's King of Steaks a tourist trap? Is Geno's Steaks a tourist trap? The answer to both questions are indubitably yes. But still, let's see if Pat's is better than Geno's or if Geno's is better than Pat's just for the fun of it!

They dont suck at all... They are good cheesesteaks... They use good meat, good Amoroso rolls. They are just quality and a bit above average. They are overpriced tho. BUT, the one thing I like about Pats and Geno's is their consistency, and their rolls are always fresh, no matter what time you go. I get it though, they have become a tourist trap, and they are ovepriced, so if you want to factor that in to donwgrade them, fine, but to say they "suck" is a bit absurd. And I have lived in South Philly for 38 years.

The best Philly Cheesesteak in Philadelphia is a toss up between John of Roast Pork, Tony Luke's and D'Alessandros. D'Alesssandros finely dices the steak. The best bread on a Philly Cheesesteak is Tony Luke's. John of Roast Pork uses provolone instead of cheese wiz and surprisingly it tastes better. It's your personal choice but these are the 3 places with the highest ratings for Philly cheesesteak

I wonder if social media is the only thing keeping places like this alive. Back in the day, historic restaurants that were once good but eventually the food started sucking and/or getting too expensive would just go out of business and would only live on as memories. Every time someone I know takes their first trip to Philly, they visit these places and post pictures on social media. It's almost "proof" they did indeed go to Philly.

The way Geno's uses full slices of steak looks like it traps the cheese at the bottom of the roll. So if you bite the top, you get a dry bite with just steak. Sort of like a Chipotle burrito when one half is all rice and the other half is good stuff.

I’ll get a chance to go and try it again and see if it’s still good because what you just shown neither one of them look too good back in the day look way better than that and pats didn’t used to chop theirs. They used to make it like Gino’s got it and it was delicious and tender, and that was the first time I had cheese whiz, but I wouldn’t eat cheese whiz now we’ll see. Thanks again. Also, from what I've heard, nobody orders regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia (the bright yellow cheese, search 'regular cheese wiz in Philadelphia'). Provolone is definitely the most preferred cheese if choosing between American, Wiz, or Provolone. I also want you to try another cheesesteak place called Steve’s Prince of Steaks, with sharp Provolone cheese and onions, you could also get the double-meat cheese, and Sunshine Sandwich Shop, with 'The Paulie', you can look for the menu on Yelp in one of the reviews there. @CreedK said in Bon Appétit's video titled "16 Philly Cheesesteaks in 12 Hours. Which Is the Best? | Bon Appétit": "That Woodrow's house cheese is exactly the kind of thing that more places should be doing. Regular cheese whiz is a perfect pairing for cheesesteaks because of its texture. But let's be real here, it's still a dogshit fake cheese product that has no business being in your digestive system on a regular basis (which is a problem if you like cheesesteaks and cheese fries)." I grew up near Pittsburgh PA, and around the time I turned 21 (so 15 years ago) or so a friend and I did a road trip out to philly just for the purpose of trying these places. We hit up Pats, Genos and Tony Lukes. All I can really remember is that while they weren't "bad", they were straight up NOT worth a fraction of the hype nor the trip out. A local little dive bar made cheese steaks that were 3x better than either in all facets. One of the two (pats or genos) was pretty rude. My friend wanted mushrooms and peppers on his steak, and they flat out refused calling it a "garbage sandwhich" saying "ayyy read the sign... wit or wit out... that's it". Ok. Whatever. Neither were particularly good. When we got to Tony Lukes, I ordered like a spicy cheese steak or something. I didn't care much for it, but I think that's mostly the spicy thing. My friend said he liked Tony Lukes better than the other 2. I won't go back purposely, but I'd really love to try one from D'Alessandros When I went into NYC I made sure to stop at defontes. I reallly loved the pizza steak, great sandwhich.

Putting cheese wizz on a Philly steak is sacrilegious. No one but these guys do it.

Pat's definitely needed a remodel. When we tried a decade ago it was really run down and dirty. Felt like we needed a tetanus shot afterwards. Geno's by comparison was very clean and better organized. Both were OK, but just on cleanliness we preferred Geno's. Tony Luke's roast pork was my favorite sandwich overall, but I never had Angelo's or Dalessandro's. Next trip.
