On March 12, 2018 a unique spectacle took place in Patagonia: a huge ice barrier between the face of the Perito Moreno Glacier and the shore of Lake Argentino gave way, and the glacier surged forward with amazing force. We were incredibly lucky to have been there at the right time to witness this awesome show. Enjoy and share if you like it.

Nice video, and it is a disappointment to have missed the dam collapse. During the glacier calving the audio we get is generally the voices of oohs, aahs and holy s__t/f__ks. It is rare to hear the impact of the falling ice hitting the water. Just once I would like to hear ice hitting the water, just once. Thanks for the video.

The polar Ice Caps and ice shelves are miles high in places. This is a pretty small glacier.
@zeitreise5049
@zeitreise5049 6 лет назад
Of course, the calving is a very frequent phenomenon, especially in this fast-moving glacier. In the video it is said that the formation and subsequent rupture of an ice dam between the glacier front and the lake shore only occurs every couple of years. The first time ever it occured in 1817. After 1988 it paused for many years, but it resumed this peculiar activity in 2004. In this millenium, there were as yet five ruptures, the last before this one in 2016. The 2016 dam rupture was featured big on TV and YT and was hugely impressive, but the 2018 collapse occured at night, so there is only "before" and "after" coverage.

ZEITreise: Thanks for the fascinating video. At first, I thought glacier collapses might be due to the effects of global warming. However, your comments that (at least) these types of glacier collapses have occurred since 1817 caused me to doubt that global warming is a factor. On the other hand, wonder: is there evidence these types of glacial collapses have been happening far longer? It's all very puzzling. I wonder what view environmental scientists have about this glacial phenomenon.

I would think the water flow at the base of the glacier wearing away the bottom of the ice contributed to the calving.

Is the glacier still moving?
@zeitreise5049
@zeitreise5049 6 лет назад
It is moving all the time, Perito Moreno is one of the fastest glaciers in the world. Thus, many tourists come here to see the calving. But on march 12, the speed was enhanced because of the release of pressure from the collapsed ice dam. Now it is back to normal, which can still be very impressive.

You ever drink half a blue Slurpee on a hot day? It melts and get all soft and spongy, then all at once it collapses? That’s what’s happening to the Ice Caps. And all at once they’ll collapse.
@dylanmacaya9166

Though this glacier of course is not located on either one of the icecaps but rather at an inland location of the Patagonia region of southern Argentina in the Glacier National Park of that country.

Why is it not possible to capture these icebergs and use them for irrigation in countries with a lack of water??
@BeechComer
@BeechComer 5 лет назад
I imagine it's the cost. These things are a LONG way from people that need water. I have read an article about Cape Town's big water problem, and a proposal to solve it by breaking off a giant iceberg and moving it hundreds (or was it thousands?) of miles. Even in the face of great need (slightly diminished now by a generous beginning to the autumn monsoon), moving it to the market is an *enormous* cost, something like $100M even with a very large iceberg (say a couple of km long). Divide 100M gallons by that cost and just the energy to move it runs $1 / gallon. Add costs of harvesting and packaging, and pay labor and storage costs, and it goes up from there. If you had nothing to drink you might cheerfully pay that price, but getting it into the water supply is currently an insurmountable problem -- and for a family of only 4, who could stand a $6-$10k monthly water bill? For water for bathing and cleaning, gardening, not to mention large scale agriculture, desalinization is currently the only practical answer, and that takes power and lots of it. But I think it's still cheaper than moving ice.
@dylanmacaya9166
@dylanmacaya9166 4 года назад
And you wouldn't be able to move the ice from this particular location as it is a landlocked lake in the middle of the Patagonia region of southern Argentina.

That being Glacier National Park of Argentina and Chilè in the heart of the Patagonia region of southern South America. Glacier calving footage doesn't get much better than this. Inland Glacier calving footage that is happening on a lake and not into the sea or ocean does not get any better than this as the Perrito Morreno Glacier going into Lago Argentino is a place like no other in the world. It is truly second to none!
