Patagonia R1 Air Hoody - Ultra-Breathable and Comfortable
The brand new Patagonia R1 Air is super comfortable, like ridiculously comfortable. Plus, it is very breathable. This makes it great for high output activities.
This should be available in late 2020, or early 2021.
There are several models in the R1 Air line up. In this review, I will be focusing on the R1 Air Hoody. This is a full zip jacket that can be used for a variety of situations. As a hoody for cool weather active pursuits, as a casual piece, or as a mid-layer.
I used it this fall in the mountains of Colorado in temps ranging from 25 - 50 degrees. The R1 Air was a pleasure on the trails in the cooler temps. Not too hot, not too cold. It dumps heat as fast as any active insulation I have tested. At night, I slipped a puffy on over it with ease.
The fit and function are great too. For reference, I am 6'1" 205lb 45" chest and 33" waist. The XL was a great fit. This jacket is a more trim or athletic fit, so keep that in mind. The sleeves are excellent as well, they did not ride up when I reached overhead. For reference, I am a 36/37" on arms.

This is such a versatile piece, and very good at being both warming and cooling. I’ve used it climbing on a cold sunny day, or as a layer in the mountains, and for warming up on a trail run. Also around the house when working at home. Absolutely love it!

Got the zip neck version to use along my das light hoody ( the das parka would be overkill , so went with good layering ) and I’m very satisfied with it simple (and the result of the combination) awesome products! Edit: awesome overview and work , as usual

Thank you Sir! They sent over the DAS parka as well. Waiting till it gets cold enough to use it. I tried it this weekend when camping in temps right around freezing and was more than warm enough LOL. We should hit temps in the teens in the next few weeks, and hopefully snow as well! How are you liking the DAS light? That looks like an excellent jacket. Take care! - Sean

I‘ve had the R1 Air Zip Neck for a couple of weeks now. It‘s super warm! I don‘t know about high-exertion activities in this thing though. It has to be very very low temperature before I considered skinning or climbing up a mountain in this sweater. All and all super comfortable and nice fit. I do think the technical aspect of the material is a bit overrated. It‘s basically like a classic oldskool soft-fleece layer with a fancy weave-pattern. Otherwise same weight, similar warmth and dries as fast.
@cannibalmanimal2336
@cannibalmanimal2336 3 года назад
I’ve only had it a few hours in one run and respectfully beg to differ. Temp was 33°F realfeel 29°F gusts 12 mph. Since it just came in the box today I wanted to test it raw so no baselayer at all, no shell. Trail pacer tights and as always my constant accomplice and faithful companion the cap air gaiter. The R1 Air remained dry the entire time. Its hollow core fibers make it mimic wool so the little moisture that was present went into the fibers to give it that “merino like” skin-feel when moist. It dries so quickly it’s crazy. My usuals winter run setup is a cap air crew+gaiter+airshed , but this could be a one man army. Judging by how it is right at freezing I’m sure it could go into the 20s before needing a base under or airshed over.
@ovivan79
@ovivan79 3 года назад
@@cannibalmanimal2336 Fair enough. It's always fascinating how different people's temperature regulates. For comparision, I just recently skinned up a mountain for 2-3 hours with just the Cap Thermal Weight baselayer at ~28°F. I still got hot and sweaty so had to put on a Houdini once we got a little higher and wind started to kick in. My usual winter run setup is a running tight, 150 merino t-shirt and the airshed pro, and I still get hot even at around freezing. I couldn't wear such a warm baselayer as the air crew and a gaiter. The high collar and hood of the airshed pro are enough for me and I use the two-way zipper a lot to regulate airflow. The air shed pro is the faithful companion in my setup. I haven't considered wearing the R1 Air as a single layer during winter. I'll give that a try.
@cannibalmanimal2336
@cannibalmanimal2336 3 года назад
@@ovivan79 based on your setup ima gonna try the airshed w just a smartwool 150 tee under. I’m sure it would work, last week I tried a cap air w a 150smartwool shortsleeved tee on top just for a bit of breathable wind block without adding much heat, and it was great. Lots of pieces are potentially interchangeable since they all are technically “active insulation” w similar properties.

Hey Oscar! We have not done the regular R1 yet. We have done the R1 Techface, which is really great as well. I believe he R1 is Polartec Power Grid, so a little different feel and pattern. Looks like the woolyester fleece pattern more than the grid pattern from the merino air. Is this a full synthetic version of the merino air with pockets and a zipper?

I have had the red teckface for 3 years, used on pct. Only complaint is the face opening while zipped high. Makes me feel like im supposed to be hardcore ice climbing or something lol. Its never failed to keep me warm and its hands down most comfortable jacket i own. With that being said this r1 Air fullzip looks like an upgrade and i plan on retiring the old. The way the material sits on him looks much more comfortable. The drop pockets are a huge advantage as well. Chest pockets are same.

what would you prefer, the R1 Air or the Nano Air Hoody? Saw you have both, but the nano review is a bit older, so a comparison would be great Edit: maybe I should mention the use. Great question! I LOVE the Nano Air Hoody and use it very often. I have used it for ski touring, and hiking a lot. I appreciate the R1 for a lot of the reasons in the review, but if I had to go with one over the other, I think I would go with the Nano Air Hoody. I still use mine from years ago! It packs ups almost as small as a down hoody, but dumps heat like a boss. Yet keeps you insulated when you need it. Hope that helps.

@@Engearment Yeah, of course. Thats a very big help. I was in a patagonia shop last week (the eonly one in germany) and wanted to take a look at the new R1 Air. Employee recommended me the Nano Air Hoody bc its DWR coating and the greater breathability. Hi! First and foremost, phenomenal review. I have a few questions for you. I’m looking for fall/winter gear for this upcoming season that can be used casually and for some slight skiing. I’m looking for a good mid and outer layer and live in the Philadelphia area so temps for the winter can get as low as 30 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ve seen some good reviews on the Nano Puff, but what do you recommend if you were in my boots? :)
@Engearment
@Engearment 3 года назад
Thanks for kind words Vincent! Much appreciated :). Let me think on your situation. I really like the Nano Air as a mid layer for active skiing (uphill - splitboarding to be exact LOL). If I were on a chair lift, the Nano Puff could be better as it generally stays warmer. Plus, you can use the Nano Puff as a nice casual piece as well. Might as well make those dollars stretch!
@vincentngo9494
@vincentngo9494 3 года назад
@@Engearment Thanks for the informational response. One more quick question. Since I'm most likely going to get the Nano Puff, what outer shell should I get? I don't really want to splurge on a technical winter jacket, so I'm looking for a good rain jacket to go over the nano puff if things get nasty. I've seen things such as the Patagonia Torrentshell, the North Face Resolve/Venture and the Marmot Precip? Which do you like and what's best for my scenerio as a good causal yet active jacket? Other recommendations are welcome.
