I’m so happy you enjoyed it! This is a terrific film. It has a tremendous message of love and hope. I used to live very close by to Patch’s Hospital and exchanged email with people there. Also, a much older fiddler friend of mine named Henry the Fiddler, went to Russia to entertain children in hospitals with Patch a few years ago. He’s a wonderful hippie man. I hope someday when you do more Robin that you will do The Fisher King like I mentioned before. Jeff Bridges is in it, as well as the crazy guy from the beginning of this one. He was in The Green Mile. I forget his name, but he’s a terrific character actor. Thanks again for your thoughtful reaction to such a treasure of a movie. It was bitter sweet to see two now deceased actors with Robin and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Such amazing acting all around. Thanks!

I haven't watched this movie since I was a kid. Now as an adult I think its an even better movie. Robin Williams was truly special, And its sad to hear how he was suffering from mental illness towards the end. He has spread so much joy and happiness through his films and comedy.

It was a bit corny, and the movie focused a little too much on just comedy in holistic medicine. Let the haters hate; it's just them wasting their lives while producing nothing themselves. People with uninspired outlooks don't understand anything about Patch Adams, this movie, or its original purpose.

This movie impacted me so much that I adopted Patch Adams patient care model for our EMS organization. We tried to become closer to our patients and treat them as actual human beings instead of a medical ailment. We sought out Patch and visited with him in his home in Arlington, VA where he happily shot a video for our new EMS staff orientation. We gave big red clown noses to all our staff and encouraged them to "play" with their patients to lighten their moods. Patch Adams and Robin Williams....what a great pairing.

Gemini, your story is a wonderful addition to the legacy that Mr. Adams is leaving with his vision for compassion-based healthcare. It is awesome to hear that some humans have decided to adopt compassion when treating other humans. Thank you.

This is the epitome of a Robin Williams-centric movie. If you like Robin Williams, you’ll probably like this movie. If you need more than that in a movie, you’ll probably be disappointed. This isn’t a movie that is going to tell you more about the real guy Patch Adams. It’s just a vehicle for Robin Williams to play a character he’s accustomed to playing. If you like that, great. If not, you might have a tough time. I don’t mind it. There are some memorable scenes. But it’s Robin Williams doing his thing, so you have to be on board with that.

Bo. I think when this came out in 98. It was just after Good Will Hunting and What Dreams may come". And some people felt let down by the movie itself. Basically, it was not as amazing as Good Will Hunting, so they wrote it off as a not-so-good movie. (Not me of course. I loved Patch Adams). I think "Good Will Hunting" garnered Robin Williams a slew of new fans. And they are not prepared to go with all his choices of movie scripts.

One thing that has followed this movie since it was released, for some reason, is people talking about how bad it was. The other thing that goes along with it is that they never really explain why they feel that way. I’ve always liked this movie. I think it’s entertaining, but more importantly I think it makes some emotionally honest and hopeful statements about life. Corinne’s death being the biggest one. Horrible things will happen. Out of nowhere and when you are nowhere near ready for them. Do you let it destroy your hope? Do you let it jade you toward life forever? Some certainly do. Would Corinne have said that doing her best to help people wasn’t worth risking her life? Hope is hard. Especially in the dark times. But without it, things are far darker. Maybe that’s the dividing line for who likes this movie and who doesn’t. People who believe in that hope and people who don’t. For me, hope is worth it.

As someone who is (probably) dying.....I have lost over 40 lbs in just 4 years, and my doctor's only advice was "eat more cake". (being only 110 at the beginning, you can see how this is now a major concern). I finally found a doctor who actually cared enough to try to solve the mystery. We have made some progress, but....unfortunately...not the cure. I have been tested, poked, prodded, x-rayed, MRI'ed, CAT scanned, etc. to death. Each time yields some results, but not the complete picture. I am getting scarred, and I wish I had a doctor like Patch Adams to help....at least to offer hope. P.S. Have you watched the "crowd funded show The Chosen? There are, currently, 16 episodes total. (Season 1 and 2). You have a wonderful insight in your reaction videos, and I'd be curious to see you react to these. (Season 2 is intense!) Bless you, Honey. You are a dear.

As someone who has been a patient for months on end and had doctors who were like Patch and like an a-hole in the same period...the surgeon like Patch was better. I was less afraid and had a better understanding of what was going to happen. The head of vascular surgery would leave the room every time I or my family asked a question before that surgery. The nurses had to reassure us that he had horrible bedside manner but he was amazing in his lane. It is to this day, the most painful surgery I ever had. He didn't listen when I tried to explain that they had kept me on the patch to stop my period. I asked if they wanted to were going to do it again and he left the room. They didn't renew the patch. My period started after months of it being stopped during my surgery and my blood pressure tanked. I was having an 8" ileum resection and he rebuilt part of my large intestine to keep it functional. But waking up from that surgery was truly the worst pain of my life. We didn't even discover my period started until the day after I was moved out of the ICU and back to the cancer/infectious disease ward. I had to move from surgical bed to regular bed. The pain was so bad they put a CNA on me, and bumped my fentanyl amount to almost kills me...and the CNA kept me from dying. They kept me insensible for a day. It felt better after the next day. I could focus on blocking out the pain and walking the halls.

This is something I look for in a GP. I have had so many doctors talk over and around me when I tell them exactly what's wrong or not take into consideration that some people don't like just being handled without a head's up. It's frustrating and probably why so many people don't seek medical care unless they absolutely have to.

He was so hairy lol lol fun fact! He had to shave all his body hair to play Popeye and he's talked about how hard it was to keep shaving and waxing for different roles (I. E., Mrs. Doubtfire) but he had to or else he's a gorilla. On another FYI note- the actor who played Patch's professor had also played the Warden in The Shawshank Redemption. And the older guy who did most of the talking at Patch's hearing, that was acting icon- Richard Kiley, it was his voice that was used as the Dinosaur narrator in the jeeps for Jurassic Park. I think there's a bit of snobbery involved in the criticism of this movie. It's aims directly for our heartstrings, without any qualms, and it's easy to se how that feels cloying to many people. Personally I loved the movie, because once in a while that kind of movie is quite cathartic. I also admire Robin Williams both as an actor and a human being, so there's also that.
@Randerson2409
@Randerson2409 2 года назад
Well, I certainly won't disagree with you too much on people being overly critical of it due to it's more schmaltzy outlook, that's definitely not the only major criticism of it, least of all by Dr Adams himself. For a start, Dr Adams is a skilled and practiced medical physician, whereas the idea of treating ailments with actual medicine is entirely glossed over in the movie, barely given more than a passing mention, or being treated as cold and detached. There's also the unfortunate fact that Carin is basically entirely fabricated as a character for this movie, including her history of trauma, effectively entirely replacing the actual friend of Dr Adams who was murdered, but he was in no way romantically attached to Dr Adams.

Because the movie is shallow and manipulative. It has one dimensional villains, the main character is sanctimonious and smarmy. We never saw him study at all in medical school he could be cheating for all we know. Patch had to have a chorus of people all around him to clap and smile to reinforce to the audience that he is the hero. The “hero” of film also practiced medicine without a license and stole from a hospital.

A lot of people hate this movie for their own reasons. The real Patch Adams loved Robin Williams, and said that he would have picked no one else to play him. Both Robin and Patch knew that Universal didn't produce an accurate film; and since the real Patch Adams didn't receive a dime from any of this, I'd say the haters can go on hating it. The real reason this movie was green-lighted by Mr. Adams was that he wanted to use the fame that the movie generated in order to draw attention to his mission to promote his unique vision of compassion-based healthcare; some might call it a style of holistic medicine. Thanks for the reaction OGB. I encourage everyone to look up the real Patch Adams and help support his mission as much as they can. Medicine should be about treating the whole patient, not making insurance executives wealthier.

People don't like this? i love patch adams its such a great movie showing that caring and happiness can change a lot in a persons life, unfortunately not everyone's life as the person who killed his girl and stuff but doesn't mean you give up.

One Hour Photo? Reacted to that too LMAO definitely not typical Robin Williams but super interesting to see him in that role! As for Doctor Who, if I did series I definitely would! I just don't have the time at this point! Hopefully some day!

a lot of people view robin williams serious movies as less than compared to his comdies. but i feel these are his most real performances along with What Dreams May Come. another serious/comedic relief role that he absolutely crushed

Here is what I remember about when this movie came out. It was polarizing. The reason I heard over and over again was that it was just another Robin Williams film where he played yet again the same character. If you look at his list of credits you will notice that Movies like One Hour Photo and Death to Smoochy came out after Patch and Bicentennial. I think it started to get to a place where you knew if he was in the movie it was going to be certain kind of movie. Until he did the darker roles there was definitely a large group of people and critics who were eye rolling his movies. He almost couldn’t be seen for a while there.

Man I really hope that isn't what sent him down such a dark path that he ultimately never returned from.

This is one of Robin Williams' best movies. While not completely accurate to the real life Hunter "Patch" Adams, it's a beautiful story and a very much underrated film.

Starring Robin Williams as "Patch". A former suicide attemptee who learns about how the patients know more than the doctors. So he starts his own hospital where laughter really is the best medicine

See, I LOVE this movie. It's in my top 200 films. I tend to think those that don't like it probably adhere to some kind of belief that doctors shouldn't have a sense of humor, or are just overly serious people themselves with severely deficient senses of humor. Much like Dean Walcott, they probably need to practice some "excessive happiness." If they did, they'd enjoy the film for what it is.

I don't believe the movie goes into any detail about it, but there is actually a very good reason why medical students are generally limited in their contact with patients, and when they are allowed contact, it's generally supervised. The hospital, and by association the school, are directly liable for everything that happens in that building if it is within their control. Hunter certainly was very altruistic and caring with his particular antics, but if they just allowed him to act as he pleased, they would need to do the same for basically everyone, and I can guarantee there would be at least one (which is one too many) students who would get the very bright idea to provide actual medical treatment to a patient, which could lead to serious complications for the wellbeing of that patient.

The scenario w/ Coryn was a Hollywoodism: in real life, it was Patches best friend that was a guy, but the producers need to Hollywood it up to get the film out. There is an interview with Patch at the end of the VHS copy , and also on DVD.

I'm glad you enjoyed the film. Not going to get into a huge list of issues, but since you asked: The love interest in the film is based on someone that Patch really did date and eventually married. The death is very made up, in context with the film.
