Modern day Patek Philippe split second started with the gorgeous reference 5959 in 2005, which at the time, was the world’s thinnest monopusher split-seconds at only 5.25 mm in thickness.
This legendary reference was soon replaced by Ref. 5950 launched in 2010. An application piece since its birth, this retro masterpiece featured an art-deco style cushion-shaped stainless steel case, paying tribute the historical pieces of the 1920s.
The present watch reference 5950/1A-013 takes the beauty of its predecessor a notch up in terms of the aesthetic. While it retains all the trademark style cues from the original 5950, this beauty has the numerals applied in pink-gold, with pink-gold hands and matching corner fillings. The contrast is instantly eye-catching, and adds a rich hue to the otherwise understated magnificence of the original 5950. The dial displays hours, minutes and split-second mono-pusher chronograph with 60 second and 60 minute counters.
The movement is where this timepiece comes alive! A riot of springs, levers and bridges, this intensely complicated hand-wound calibre is a sight to behold. The combination of steel, black-polished bridges/screws and the rose-gold wheels and engravings, and to top it all, the impeccable finishing with chamfered edges, the polished column-wheel cap, contrasting against the matte finish bridges offer wonderful dimensionality and depth which one could admire for hours.
The little detail on the corners of the case-back with pink-gold filled engravings, complimenting the dial-side is just exquisite. This can easily be termed as a piece of art, which also happens to be a grand complication, and not the other way around. The marvellous and extremely rare timepiece comes on a factory fitted stainless steel bracelet, limited to only 10 pieces as per its special limited edition certificate it is a true understated Grand Complication made in steel, something they rarely do nowadays.
