The RVA Aphasia Group in Richmond VA wanted to help people better understand and communicate with stroke survivors with aphasia. Aphasia is a disorder of communication that impairs a person's ability to use and comprehend language.
To help family, loved ones, strangers and healthcare professionals better communicate with aphasia patients they produced an 18 minute video called Patience, Listening and Communicating With Aphasia Patients. The video helps people better understand what it's like to have aphasia and how best to communicate with someone who has it.

Mine wasn't caused by stroke but I thought there were only few people with this problem. I've had it for 38 years and recieved no help from anywhere so I buried myself away and lived alone all this time. I felt so embarrassed whenever I was asked a question because I always got stuck. It's nice to know I'm actually human.

@@abBensch it’s not in a way you can understand “well it is” but it’s for real like you know what your about to say then you just can’t find the words and for me it’s pretty mild and I can still type pretty well but it is very frustrating when people are looking at you like your dumb cause you can’t get you words together or sometimes I just give up and say I’m bad at speaking sorry and shut my ass up

I am a Caregiver for my 93 father after his stroke. It was 12 1/2 years ago. ( Wernicke Aphasia) I can’t stress enough find a support group and get them into Speech therapy. (He went for 9 yrs) Always have Closed caption on the TV. He might not be able to read but some words might come through. We do have to drive an hour away for the support group (once a month) but has SAVED me and my dad. Good luck to all of you. Susan from Indiana 😘

Today I think I realised I may have it, after some research. A brain surgery that happened a few years ago in the temple lobe, due to epilepsy which bugged up my speech while have a full seizure or a partial seizure. It was rather close to the part where I speak and a bit to the short term memory as well. At times I can’t remember words to certain things when trying to talk or explain but I can describe them, or get words very similar in pronunciation to them (but will mean complete different to what I’m looking for) so explaining the figure and the symbols helps. It’s is rather frustrating with those who barely know you and don’t know the circumstances of why you can’t think of the word, due to the operation. But thank you for this, it explains a lot that I didn’t know about it and will try and see a doctor or whoever helps with this stuff.

The older we get, the more frailties come to the surface and more aware we are of our deficiencies. These neurological issues are the worse because they inhibit your ability to deal and manage your shortcomings and possibly catch them early on in its development. I've started to develop these symptoms myself and I'm only 47 years old but my ability to fluidly communicate with people either through verbal or text has seem to hit a barrier like the person said in this video.

I know a lady in the hospital just wouldn't drink much water. She had a stroke the next morning. Arms legs couldn't move anything. I happened to be visiting and found she could a finger. She could respond to one yes two know. The family jumped up and were immediately began to finger respond with her. No nurse had checked her that carefully. I need someone to please get back to me ASAP. This is going on with my GI- Long story. I almost died twice last month. I can’t eat or drink because the food and liquids don’t really move like it’s supposed to because my GI system mobility to help things move along isn’t really working. I was diagnosed with “Mixed Connective Disorder, Neuropathy, Myopathy, and Livedo Reticularis to name a few and it is attacking my central nervous system along with the rest of my organs. My Dr is not taking this seriously- No one is. I can literally feel all my organs slowly dying. Everything I have read recommends I head to the ER, and I have! Way more times than I can count. I either showed up unable to move (anything but my eyes) and speak. It’s been rare when I can speak a few words and yet, I was always sent home with “nothing is wrong.” I’ve also got sent home with a “drug addict” notes on my file and with everything going on right now… who will speak for me here on earth when they are kicking out anyone in hospitals who isn’t “the patient.” I appreciate whatever help, advice anyone is willing to share. @@anuabraham6372 , my brother is the same. He lives in an Assisted Living. 3 meals a day, 2 showers a week. They have activities at Assisted Living. My husband & I visit him, take him out occasionally….that’s all he has.
