TO THE PATIENT WITH SEVERE COPD, I FEEL FOR YOU, DO NOT LET THOSE NEGATIVE COMMENTS GET TO YOU, THOSE PEOPLE HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO! ALL THE BEST AND I KNOW YOU WOULD NOT WISH THAT ILLNESS ON YOUR WORST ENEMY, YOU ARE SO BRAVE!
No one can truly understand how it feels to have severe COPD. This time last year after a lung function test, I was given two years to live. I was so depressed and just kind of gave up! Until it occurred to me that I could fight… So I did!!! I read all I could on diet, exercise, stress etc. Focus on what you can do as I can honestly say that my breathing has improved so much that I’m actually in better shape than I was at that awful consultation. Please fight on people as you’ve nothing to lose and so much to gain…. God bless and good luck to all you COPD patients cos it ain’t over til the fat lady sings! 🙏❤️🏴
Yes, my doctor said that he wasn't going to sugar coat it, but but he told me I probably won't need to renew my license. It renews next year, but like you I am going to try and find a good healthy diet, and and try to exercise as much as I can.
@@AlanTClark I feel better than I have in a long time, so I do really recommend doing all you can! Also, I’m still alive and I’m not focusing on the end. My take is that death can come suddenly to everyone & anyone so the knowing gives us an advantage in a way. We can carry on living just like everyone else and you never know how long & how well you could live with that attitude. All the best my friend and remember we are not alone....🙏❤️🇬🇧
@@kensyskye8965 Thank you!! But I do find it very hard to not think about death on a constant basis, because I am reminded every second of the day with my breathing.

I was thinking the same thing. Real down to Earth and to the point without feeling sorry for himself in such a dire situation. I hope he has an easy of a time as possible on his way out. You know "they"(whoever 'they' are) always say that bad things always happen to the nicest people.

On August 2, 2022 I had an exacerbation of COPD (I have stage 4) and my daughter called an ambulance. I ended up in the ER for 6 hours before they transferred me to the ICU. I asked the doctor if I was going to live and he said that if I made it through the night, there was a slim chance. That's all I needed to keep on fighting. I was able to go home three days later and have not had another occurrence that drastic, thank goodness. However, I am home bound and on oxygen 24/7 but at least I'm still here!!
I am non-smoker with severe COPD at 42. Had to leave job. Listening to Audiobooks (especially on RU-vid) helps me to maintain my good mood because I am not able to have physically active lifestyle due to frequent exacerbations. Breathing is not valued till it is laboured.
See if you have LUNG WASH in your country. I saw video on here look under super vasi it will inspire you. The procedure is only15- 25 minutes long! She seems like a great Dr. In America they don't do the procedure. I guess they make more money the other ways or by lung transplant like I was offered. No thanks! I want a lung wash to cure COPD!! GOOD LUCK to you!! Cheers🌞
I quit smoking and I feel great, I think I quit in time to avoid COPD. My Father died a few months ago from COPD. Sad to see my Dad struggle for air. I'm actually glad he died and is not suffering anymore. Smoking is terrible.
David Im so happy you quit smoking!!! Hugs to you! My Mom is dying from COPD and still smoking! Breaks my heart that she cant stop! May your dad rest in peace
Great job quitting. Don't go back. For all the person's who have this disease, they really don't have to hear another story of suffering and death. Your dad, RIP, might have been older and have other, maybe many other diseases. It's not healthy for people to keep hearing this over and over, you have to understand that. Your story might have put someone into a depression or panic. Peace
I was recently hospitalized and had a pulmonary function test. The results came back that I have severe COPD too. I'm currently in pulmonary rehab and I feel it's a step in the right direction in my treatment plan. Good luck. It's hard but we'll make it!
I’m at end stage and last year was given two years max! However, I’ve changed my diet, move around as much as possible, taken supplements and most of all breath nothing into my lungs than air. After one year my breathing has improved and I’ve even swam recently… So my take on it is to ‘choose life’ ! I truly wish u all the best….🙏❤️🏴

Most importantly I have my faith in Christ to fill all gaps.

whenever you get an urge to smoke, pop a Hall's mentolyptus cough drop into you mouth and suck on it. This is how I quit smoking, 32 years ago. Have never smoked since. Not being a slave to cigarettes is great!
I smoked for 40 years which at the end was a two to three pack a day habit. It’s going on five months without a cigarette and I started drinking water every morning late afternoon and evening and for some reason my lungs seemed to get worse as every week went by. Shortness of breath chest rattle etc
I have stage IV and it's a struggle doing anything physical, I'm in my late 60s. Fortunately I can still work and I cherish it (CDC epidemiologist) and I'm allowed to telework full time because of my health. Without it, life would be a much greater struggle. Hang in there!

I quit smoking (2 packs/day) a long time ago when I was 31. Today, I can jog, power walk for long distances, cut grass, etc. For all the smokers out there: QUIT NOW. Your lungs are all you have to get oxygen into your blood. Remember: "If you can't breathe, nothing else matters'.
@@lduranceau8046 It's possible I've had it all these years and it slowly progresses. I know Christy Turlington was diagnosed with emphysema in her 30's and she's in her 50's now. Most people aren't diagnosed with it until their 5th decade. My best advice after you quit smoking, is always protect your lungs from chemicals, dust, and smoke. Always make sure your Vitamin D levels are good, and always do 30 minutes a day of aerobic activity like walking. Learn how to exercise your diaphragm with breathing exercises.

I am living with copd for 19 years and the copd has progress to stage 4 very severe and i am really struggling with my breath my lung capacity is 29%.i have come to hear about the zephyr valve which is strongly recommended by doctors witch is a life changer but very expensive i wish i had the financial capacity to undergo the surgery
I have the surgery...3 in my left lung (they only do one lung a year) 2 years ago....although it is different for different people-realistically, you can only expect a up to @10% improvement in lung function.....for someone who is at a [point where they cant make it across the room-that is a big difference. Im at 27%..still walk a mile each day-before surgery I was doin1-1.25 miles in @ 21 minutes...after I worked myself up to 3 miles in 60 minutes...then I got a cough for a month from a respiratory virus and lost all of that 10% gain.....I never "felt better" from the valves...I was more exercise tolerant for a while. I go in a month o Duke to discuss what to do with my other lung . I am now 56 years old and have not smoked in the 5 years since I was hospitalized for a week with my first real exasperation
yeah it seems that way alot of people who smoke or breathe in second hand smoke get it but there are baby's who have it I think. go and google it and see. I may be wrong
Never listen to people who type in all caps. COPD has practically nothing to do with "stress" whatsoever. It has to do with smoking, chronic inhalation of irritants and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency.
it does have a point, because it gave me real life symptoms of the disease from a real person. that's why i looked up "copd patient" in the youtube search.

There is no cure. I know. I have it. It is the most devastating feeling knowing that this disease only gets worse, and rapidly. A handful of meds just profess to maintain and support the condition, and they don't do much later on.....
My grabdmother died 15 days ago from COPD. She smoked too much, in 4 days she had a ceisis and died... She went to quickly :( this is so damn sad. She was so tired of this desease :( it is horrible.
other times it comes from second hand smoke because it's worse. But that's not always the case because there are different types of emphysema not always caused from smoking and little babies have it. I read a little about it.

Tobacco companies aren't going to stop. Neither the government is going to ban all tobacco products like cigarettes. This is because both tobacco companies and the government make a lot of money out of this business. Companies make huge profits. While the government earns through taxes paid by these companies. Finally it's down to the common individual to make a conscious decision not to give in to tobacco products. PS: Smoking isn't cool. It's nasty as shit. If you smoke you're screwing it up for yourself as well as your loved ones.
I don't believe studies have taken into account a disproportionate effect for lifelong smokers with AAP deficiency (carrier). An Alpha-1 carrier is a person who has one normal alpha-1 gene (M) and one defective alpha-1 gene (usually Z or S). I am 58 and was diagnosed with severe emphysema 5 years ago and was told they hadn't seen lungs like mine on anyone under 80. There are days when I have a shortness of breath which I call a breathing crisis just going to the bathroom and provided I don't die it can take me 5 minutes to recover. Normally, my 02 sat is still 98 at rest and we can't trust the over the counter devices for accuracy but it seems strongly affected by even the mildest activity. The heart rate is greatly affected and can go to 150 BPM just standing up and gasping for breath. I've considered getting those chairs some people use to sit in, in order to rest between steps through their house. It is worse in the past three years though I quit smoking in 2021, such that I only occasionally have gone to a grocery store post COVID and found that if I didn't need to use a scooter I must have a grocery cart as a walker. I have days when I can barely go to the convenience store. Alcohol in any excessive amount creates a systemic pseudo anemia that affects the bone marrow and it's production of red blood cells. One must abstain from this tendency as it drastically reduces the blood's ability to transport oxygen to the body. This seems to have resulted in those anomalous readings of a deficient 02 sat. On the MTV Awards many years ago, Dick York took a brave and difficult step up from his wheelchair and huffed out the admonition in his gruff voice "Don't Smoke." His final words before he died two weeks later.
It can be caused from chronic bronchitis left untreated and smoking I have copd I’ve quit smoking my chest is better for it I must say but I still crave ❤
One can't even hardly enjoy a cigarette nowadays since they're so pumped full of harmful chemicals that weren't present 50 years ago. What did the tobacco companies think was going to happen to people? It's sickening to think of the arrogant enlightenment people seem to think they posses today when situations like this are the case.
funny thing is people will smoke for 20+ years and it's too late to turn around! if only they quitted. rather unfortunate, though. out of all addictions, i find this the deadliest
it's based on a "Gold standard" I have COPD Gold Standard 3 which is Severe! He is on oxygen so I am thinking he is Gold Standard 4 which is Very Severe! with limited life expectancy!
There are....genetic....Alpha One....Emphysema....CF....Cystic Fibrosis..... sad, that these diseases are so very very old and no one does anything to cure them....they stigmize the patients...but wow these diseases make so much money for too many people....that's so blatant.
Well, how much do those valves cost and who can get them are from Romania where the doctors have not heard of such a thing are criminals I have severe pulmonary emphysema in both lungs in totality
Not to any great extent or permanently.. I had the surgery at Duke 2 years ago in my left lung. You have to take all the miracle ads and reviews in them with a huge grain of salt-they are all from the manufacturer . Realistically- people can only expect a @10% change in FEV...I did not "feel" any change I was higher exercise tolerant for a year-but that is all.

Traditional or official breathing exercises (like pursed lip breathing) for COPD provide very limitedly, if any, effects. Reduced breathing exercises of the Buteyko breathing technique, on the other hand, allow them to experience nearly immediate positive effects: - Blood oxygenation increases even after a 20-30 min single breathing session - In 3-7 days, nearly all COPD patients can walk about twice longer distance (and duration of time) without breathlessness (dyspnea) and with strictly nasal breathing - Nearly immediate improvements in sleep, clarity of mind, energy levels, and other lifestyle factors With time, those people with COPD who managed to normalize their breathing back to the medical norm can achieve clinical remission with normal lung function test results with 97-99 for blood oxygen numbers. This is a difficult challenge, however, and often requires months or years of effort. Medical professionals have failed to understand and explain to the general public that overbreathing (or hyperventilation) reduces one’s body oxygen level due to 3 fundamental laws of respiratory physiology: 1. When we hyperventilate (breathe more than the medical norm), we cannot improve oxygen content in the hemoglobin of the arterial blood (red blood cells are about 98% saturated with oxygen during tiny normal breathing). 2. Overbreathing reduces the CO2 concentration in the arterial blood causing a constriction of arteries and arterioles since CO2 is a powerful vasodilator. Hence, hyperventilation results in reduced perfusion and oxygen supply (confirmed by tens of published medical studies) for the liver, brain, heart, kidneys, stomach, colon, and other vital organs. 3. The reduced CO2 value in the tissues produces a shift in the O2 dissociation curve to the left. This leads to the so-called shallow or suppressed Bohr effect (a reduced O2 release by red blood cells in the capillaries). Reduced cellular oxygenation leads to anaerobic mitochondrial metabolism, elevated lactic acid values, the formation of free radicals, and cell acidosis or a lowered pH in cells.
