She was an abandoned foster child, and from all the stories she's told over the years it's clear the father sexually abused her to some degree which undoubtedly stunted her emotional growth. It's a shame she wasn't able to cope with it in a healthier way and let it affect her so severely.

It's because he treated Opie like a true friend, which it seems like something he wanted a lot more than anyone else in that industry wanted. Opie is obviously to blame for a lot of the issues the show had, but I'll never bash him for no reason like everyone else does, he was absolutely essential to the show.
